Star running back cleared to play for Georgia Tech

One of Atlanta’s top high school football players began classes at Georgia Tech on Tuesday after being approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Travis Custis is an All-State running back from Lovejoy High School who initially signed with Georgia Tech last February but had to delay his enrollment.

“It’s just a big relief for him,” his father, Travis Custis Sr., told the AJC on Tuesday.

“He has been smiling this whole week. Matter of fact, I just got off the phone with him. He was excited to get back and be around his teammates. He’s just excited to be there and ready to compete.”

It has been a long and windy road for the 3-star prospect who was rated as the third-highest member of Georgia Tech’s 2013 class, per 247sports composite rankings (Based on the team’s needs this past season, Custis could’ve been the Yellow Jackets’ most important recruit).

After signing with Georgia Tech last February, Custis enrolled in summer school and made a huge impression in voluntary workouts. However, just before preseason practice, Custis was sent home because he didn’t pass his high school graduation test.

At that point, Custis could’ve forced Georgia Tech to release him from his letter of intent and been a hotly-pursued free agent on this year’s recruiting market. He had signed with the Yellow Jackets over Wisconsin and FSU, among others, last year. However, despite feelers from other schools, Custis opted to stick with Georgia Tech.

“Georgia Tech has always been our choice,” his father said. “Coach Paul Johnson and (assistant Buzz) Preston never altered from their commitment to us, even with the NCAA Clearinghouse issues.

“They gave us their word on a lot of things, including the recruiting of other running backs, and they did everything they promised us. That’s the reason we stayed with Georgia Tech. We never considered anywhere else. We were committed to the very end.”

While separated from his Georgia Tech teammates, Custis sat out the fall semester and prepped for the test – which he passed on his first attempt in October. He also worked out with a personal trainer for four days per week, 2.5 hours per day.

“They worked on speed and agility, hill climbing, and on his leg strength,” his father said. “He’s pretty much in shape. Travis stayed focused and stayed healthy. He just couldn’t wait to get back, and he couldn’t get back quick enough.”

On Sunday, Custis reported to Georgia Tech with four members of this year’s class who are enrolling early – quarterback Matthew Jordan, linebacker Tre Jackson, cornerback Step Durham, and linebacker KeShun Freeman. Custis will be rooming with Corey Griffin, the safety from Sandy Creek High School who signed with Georgia Tech last year.

And Custis is hoping to regain the momentum from last summer that made him a schoolboy legend in Clayton County. Custis led Lovejoy to back-to-back appearances in the state championship game in Georgia’s largest classification.

“Coach Johnson said he could’ve helped the team this past season,” the elder Custis said. “Travis was with the team, but only in spirit. Hopefully, next season it will be a different story. He wants to do the same type of things that he did at Lovejoy for Georgia Tech.”

A " special admit " who will join the other management football players at an engineering school.

Pajamas is paid the big bucks to figure all that out.

If he cannot figure all that out, then find a James-Franklin-type-HC that can figure out the
Recruiting aspect, you could also find a David-Shaw-type-HC to figure it out also.

BTW, this year's Recruiting class is ranked between #44 and #49, so that's not what I call figuring out Recruiting.

BTW, most BCS level HCs will tell you that RECRUITING is anywhere from 70% to 80% of what makes a HC successful on the BCS level, so if Pajamas is VERY WEAK at Recruiting then the GT FB program is at huge disadvantage to start with, so no matter how much you love his gimmicky triple-OPtion offense, as long as he is GT's HC we will have a paltry record vs. the more talented teams.

It doesn't take too long for recruiting classes ranked in the High-40s to High-50s to manifest itself on the FIELD.

7-6 last year where we LOST to every decent team we played not named Dook, 25 losses in the last 4 years, and 1-15 vs. the Big-4 over the last 4 years, with a 1-3 in Bowl games over the last 4 years, those Bowl Games include ONE MONTH of preparation that show how weak of a HC that Pajamas is.

2-18 over the last 4 years vs. the Big-4 + Bowl Games, a WHOPPING .100 winning percentage!

Anyone that still supports CPJ as GT's HC is insane or related to him, OR is like GT AD MBobinski and just cannot afford to fire the guy!

This is the BOTTOM LINE that the CPJ apologists cannot argue about!

No matter how much you criticize me, I have facts and the the TRUTH on my side!

Has anyone seen a $ figure for Strong to go to Texas? I thought Louisville had given him a pretty good raise recently to keep him.....

What do you guys think about Louisville hiring Coach Roadrash again?

I think if he (Custis) can make a contribution beyond what we have, then he will play.  Laskey has been a consistent performer---he finds the holes (if they are there).  Snoddy just hasn't found his groove yet----he's got the straight line speed---that hasn't translated yet to the ball field---either at B-back or returning KOs.  In a 100 yd dash, he'd smoke Golden, but Golden seems to do a better job of finding the creases to run on doing KO returns.  I'd hope CPJ would design some plays---flair pass to B-back, shuttle pass like a delayed draw or whatever to try to get Snoddy the ball in an open field environment---but no luck so far.

Perhaps it is my philosophy that makes me get so upset with CPJ.  I think you tweak the plays and call plays based on specific personnel and the talents they have to maximize their unique skills---like do a reverse not with Smelter but with Snoddy so if he can get around the corner, he would be gone.  It seems the "system" takes priority---the key is execution---and running special plays for unique players is not a priority.

I guess the purpose of this new format is that it allows people to reply to  a specific blogger without having to copy & paste that person's comments into the comment window.

Maybe MC thinks that Banning and WnE have similar writing styles, unfortunately we are not the same person.

Don't you think that red shirting will be kind of a thing from the past?

He has already set out a full year.

Hopefully his skill set and talent will make red shirting not even an option....

We could not really get around the corner on jawja, with Vad airing it out...

This kid really needs to be large and in charge from day one... or...

We are still taking baby steps...............

Augusta,

Wouldn't the 4 kids who enrolled early count towards last year, thus opening up spots for this year?

@MichaelCarvell :  Right now we have 19 commits, and I know we are looking at adding a few more before NSD.  Can you give us a breakdown on what R-Jr/Jr's aren't coming back?  It looked like 19 was gonna put us at full until Vad transferred, which opens up a 20th spot.  Where are we getting those 3-4 extra spots?

Well, well, well.....so even MC, who has access to everyone's email address, says that MikeBanning and WnE are the same person.  What is the WieNer going to have to say about this? I would say this pretty much drives the last nail in that coffin of lies.

New method of posting is pretty cool.

As for C.Perkins, he had what many said should have been career ending injury,  he played very well this year, may be even better next year:

Would be nice to see power backfield with J Thomas flying thru the holes:

A Back S Days / D Hill

A Back C Perkins / D Wilson

B Back Laskey / Custis

Then speed if you need:

AB Zenon / D Andrews

AB Bostic /

BB Snoddy

___________________________________________________________________________

I am neither insane, nor related to him.  My feelings about him have nothing to do with GTAA finances either.  I simply support him because he is the coach at GT.  I supported the previous coaches similarly and will support the next coach whenever a new one replaces CPJ.

BTW, you should be careful calling others insane.  You were the one who Twitter stalked a teenager.

@GTLee It's a five year contract that pays a little less than $5 million a year.  Haven't seen exact numbers.

@GTLee Great move by the The'Ville it shows the ALUMS that The'Ville is serious about winning CFB  games.

Corp. America would be a ghost town if you fired everyone that cheated on their wives with a co-worker, why should a talented CFB HC not be hired because he got caught cheating on his wife?

By the time a Recruit is 18 years old and ready to enter College his PARENTS should have instilled a strong sense of morality into that player, so he should be able to compartmentalize and learn FB only from a guy like Petrino.

AugustaJacket

@GTLee Honestly, from an X's and O's standpoint, he was one of the better coaches available.  Louisville had a good history with him, so I can understand the hire.  His character flaws are well documented.  Personally, I wouldn't have rehired him, but my personal morals and ethics seem to be becoming a minority these days.

Maybe the SEC blackmailed Louisville into hiring him to pay back the ACC for ending their MNC streak.....  :)

@gt-40 I think he will win the backup role to Laskey initially, but could be starting/getting serious playing time by mid season.

@GTLee That's not the issue.  There are only 85 total scholarships available.

Banning's counseling Vad Lee on where to transfer.

He's Vad's new "mentor" considering his prophecies about Vad & GT were proven correct!!

@MikeBanning@GTLee your parents apparently didn't instill any sense of morality into you.  Why would a grown man lie about who he is, in the face of overwhelming proof?  Why would a grown man stalk a teenage kid on Twitter?  Why would a grown man trash individual athletes by assigning insulting nicknames of his own creation to them?  Why would a grown man have such a hate-filled agenda towards the school he CLAIMS to have graduated from?  Sure doesn't say much about the way you were reared.  Or maybe your parents did the best they could, and you are the proverbial bad seed who, no matter what good parenting he receives, still turns out to be the black sheep of the family.  I feel sorry for your parents, rather than condemning them.  I am sure you are a big disappointment to them.

Don't forget Byerly threw a really nice pass to Smelter in the spring game. Smash Mouth; I like it.  Or, Smash Moth as our friend Hairy Dwag used to say.

AugustaJacket

@MikeBanning @AugustaJacket @GTLee True, but most people who lie to cops get charged with a crime.  Justifying unethical/immoral/illegal behavior with "everyone else does it" is telling of your lack of character.

BTW, my "high standard" world is no fantasy.  I have plenty of friends who made mistakes.  I myself have made poor decisions.  We set standards and live up to them, rather than live down to the standards of the world around us.  The argument is not that people aren't perfect, but whether their actions are the result of a poor decision, or a morally bankrupt character.

Petrino's entire body of work would lead me to believe that his mistakes are not isolated incidents, but rather they are symptomatic of deeper character flaws that haven't been resolved.

For instance, if GO'L's only fault had been resume-gate, I would say he probably should get another shot at a big time BCS school.  His issue is the player death at UCF after the incident at GT.  It points to major character flaws, and therefor a lot of BCS schools aren't beating down his door, in spite of the Baylor win.

Integrity is a gift you give yourself.  Maybe it's time for you to go shopping....

@AugustaJacket @MikeBanning @GTLee

Talk to an insurance adjuster, people lie all the time about traffic accidents, you have worked with them and people that have done this are probably among your friends.

The hallways of Corp. America would be empty if all the cheaters and liars (about traffic incidents) had their jobs taken away from them.

Must be great to live in your high standard fantasy world!

@MikeBanning @AugustaJacket @GTLee So hiring a man who lied to the police (a crime) and violated university policies is ok as long as he wins ball games?

This is where you and I disagree.  It's also yet another reason why you are universally disrespected for your lack of character.

My hope is that GT NEVER cares about winning so much that we hire morally bankrupt coaches.

MikeBanning
MikeBanning

@AugustaJacket @MikeBanning @GTLee

I am applauding the laser-focused intention of the 'Ville AD to win games ,and not make excuses.

That guy (the AD) has a single-minded purpose to WIN BIG at Louisville.

That is refreshing from a GT fan's perspective given all the excuses that our Admin. makes for not winning big.

I'm not sure that GT really gives a d@mn about winning, I honestly think that the GTAA is involved in big-time college sports for the TV money and the cushy jobs that are provided by that TV money.

SupersizeThatOrder-mutt
SupersizeThatOrder-mutt

@MikeBanning@AugustaJacket@BigCrimson75Where does it say that Vad Lee thinks anybody lied?  Read the article, dummy.  Vad knew exactly what he was getting into, and he has not indicated anywhere (ANYWHERE) anything to the contrary.  Johnson DID make changes to the offense to accommodate Vad's strengths and weaknesses, and in spite of that Vad still couldn't find his secondary receivers or get the ball to any receiver with any amount of consistency.

MikeBanning
MikeBanning

@AugustaJacket @MikeBanning @BigCrimson75 ASK VAD LEE which character hurt him the most the wacko that sent the tweets or the HC that lied to him and ultimately cost him 3 years of BCS level eligibility, I see you're still trying to bail out CPJ meanwhile I am looking at it from the STUDENT-athlete's perspective.

I wonder how the WnE character knew way back then that CPJ wasn't gonna keep his word?

MikeBanning
MikeBanning

@AugustaJacket @MikeBanning @BigCrimson75

If you talk to VL that pales in comparison to a $2.7MM per year HC lying to a recruit and essentially wasting 3 years of VL's valuable eligibility, VL won't remember those tweets, but he'll ALWAYS remember the 3 WASTED YEARS that he entrusted to CPJ.

MikeBanning
MikeBanning

@AugustaJacket @BigCrimson75

Like I said before I'm sure I'm sure VL would rather get unsolicited tweets from someone that he thinks is crazy at the time , rather than WASTE 3 YEARS of eligibility not learning how to play QB under Pajamas , not that I'm defending this WnE character in any way.
