Grant Haley: Georgia Tech pursuing Vandy commit?

By Michael Carvell

Georgia Tech appears to be taking aim at Grant Haley, the 3-star cornerback who officially remains committed to Vanderbilt but is looking at options after the coaching change.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder from Lovett (private school in Atlanta) told the AJC that he will have an in-home visit with Georgia Tech assistant Lamar Owens on Thursday, the first day after the end of the NCAA’s dead period.

“I’ve stayed in touch with Georgia Tech throughout the whole process,” Haley said on Sunday night. “It’s always been a thing if Vandy didn’t work out.”

Haley, who committed to Vanderbilt last July, has had an offer from Georgia Tech since last spring.

“Georgia Tech’s academic reputation speaks for itself,” Haley said. “They’ve always kind of had a good football program. I mean, they’ve had their ups and downs. It’s a school that has always played in ACC Championship games, and that’s always good.”

Haley said he was contacted over Twitter by Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof on Sunday. The Yellow Jackets are recruiting Haley as an “athlete” prospect.

Who else is in the running for Haley? There’s Arkansas, Wisconsin and South Carolina. He got an offer from Duke last week. And Vanderbilt’s former head coach, James Franklin, offered him from Penn State over the weekend.

“It was a shock to a lot of the Vanderbilt commitments and players that he left, but it was a good opportunity for him and I’m glad he got it,” Haley said. “He told me to come to Penn State and hop on board.”

Haley is considering an official visit to Duke for next weekend, and is working on dates with Wisconsin and Penn State.

Who else? Haley said he’d like to hear from UCLA and Washington, and would also consider UGA. “I’ve visited Georgia before; they know me,” Haley said. “I would definitely give them consideration if they got into contact.”

This kid will not play for GT. Too many other schools in the hunt and he seems to be enjoying all of the attention.

Ho Hum, Tech recruiting is so boring.

GT & Pajamas are such poor recruiters, we have to sit back like also-rans and wait for HCs to change jobs and ONLY THEN do we have chance to get the Private School players from Atlanta that are Academic Qualifiers for GT.

CPJ lied to the GT fanbase when he said that we had to recruit players out of Maryland, DC, and New Jersey because there are not enough academic qualifiers here in Atlanta, and in Georgia.

What we are finding out, is that the Academic Qualifiers are here in Ga. and in the Metro Atlanta Area, but CPJ has been getting his @$$ out-worked by better Recruiters like Vandy's former HC James Franklin, Stanford's David Shaw,  and  ND's Brian Kelly.

Md, DC, and New Jersey my foot!

The longer that CPJ stays as HC of GT, the more of his major flaws get exposed, our HC doesn't seem to be the most honest of guys IMO.

Franklin currently interviewing coaching assistant's wives to make sure that they are pretty enough for him to hire their husbands.

It is good to hear that he continued to show interest in Ga Tech.  Hope he enjoys his visits.

Thought Franklin had some class.  evidently not.  leaving a school is one thing, but to then try and take your recruits with you is another.

Was wishing him the best, now cheering against psu and hoping he fails.

Impossible.  James Franklin is all about honoring one's commitment.  He would never encourage a kid to do otherwise.

Doesn't sound like anyone was waiting for a head coach to leave before recruiting this player.  I work with my 6 year old on not only reading, but understanding what she is reading.  Reading is not fundamental reading comprehension is.  It seems to be something that is sorley missing from this site with the comments left on the football and basketball blogs.

Also, I have not found any article where Coach Johnson said "that we had to recruit players out of Maryland, DC, and New Jersey because there are not enough academic qualifiers here in Atlanta, and in Georgia."

Go Jackets!!!

@MikeBanning

I am pretty sure he never said the reason for expanded recruiting was "because there are not enough academic qualifiers here in Atlanta, and in Georgia."

Do you have a link showing this to be true?
