Reaction from UGA recruits on Todd Grantham news

UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has accepted the same position at Louisville, according to the AJC’s Chip Towers.

Here’s reaction from UGA’s top recruiting targets:

  • Norcross High School’s defensive end Lorenzo Carter, who is the state’s No. 1 overall prospect and has UGA and Florida as his co-leaders, while also considering LSU and FSU: “I just heard about that today so I’m surprised but I just gotta wait and see what happens.”
  • Alabama LB commit Christian Miller of Columbia, S.C., who is considering an official visit to UGA: “Well he was the DC, so they may have to change their scheme, which would be interesting. I’m interested in seeing who the replacement will be.”

Here’s reaction from recruits already committed to UGA:

  • Defensive end Keyon Brown of Wauchula, Fla. (who probably passed Lamont Gaillard as UGA’s top defensive commit after the all-star games): “I like Coach Grantham and all, and I hope he has a good time at Louisville. But I’m a Dawg. And that’s not changing.”
  • Tucker High School linebacker Detric Dukes: “It doesn’t affect me at all I’m a dawg”
  • Marist defensive tackle Kendall Baker: “I’m not tripping. I’m still staying with UGA. We will be fine. The players are going to make things happen next year. Just the person making the calls might be different. We still going to make plays.”
  • Safety Kendall Gant of Lakeland, Fla.: “I don’t know right now (how it affects my commitment). I haven’t talked with a coach yet.”

The spin here by UGa fans is very creative. Your guy made a move for the same role for an ACC school. Writing is on the wall.

Seriously Coach G leaving Athens is a great thing. He didn't develop any players for the NFL. If you look at he last class of defensive players to leave, almost every one of them were NFL caliber players straight out of high school. Rambo is an amazing example of that. UGA has put players in the NFL then any other college that are still currently active and starting. Most of hose players came into the NFL before Todd Grantham joined the Dawgs. Strength and conditioning, and player development comes from the guidance of Coach Mark RIcht. Georgia will be in a better place with Grantham gone. If you look at the level Georgia's defense has gone since Grantham joined the team its been a downward sloe. The kids don't know how to tackle and wrap up. The play reactive football in stead of aggressive in your face defense like back in the days of David Pollack. There is a reason Georgia looses games, we allow to many points, that all started with Grantham joined the Dawgs. So I say get the hell out of Athens and don't come back.

I wonder if any of the current UGA players will decide to declare for the NFL rather than go through a system change from the 3-4 to the 4-3?

They have until 1/15/2014 to declare.

Several UGA defensive recruits will be signing with a different school...........ALL of them know that UGA will be changing from the 3-4 to a 4-3 base defense.

Let's just wait and see how many leave.

The only thing Louisville needs now is for Petrino to convince The Kiff to leave Bammy and join he and Grantham.

If that should come to pass EVERY news source will have a reporter permanently assigned to Louisville!!!!!!!!

Might get  more recruits now that he is gone. The AD and Richt  are happy campers now. They just got one less problem and Todd was going to hire Coach Kal's  replacement?

You play for the school. Coaches come and go at every school, at any given time.

It's almost like it doesn't matter who the coach is at UGA, they will get good players anyway.   I'm shocked.

(not shocked)

Tis all good - I have to say, I have almost always supported CTG when others wanted his head..

Now that he's left (do not fault him for that), BUT LOUISVILLE??

With that head coach that's so moral, & a great husband & a man of his word??

Wow...  a total 180 from where he just left in CMR..

Good Riddance - UGA will be just fine..

I haven't heard any UGA players express love for Grantham.  The Georgia program is better off without him.  Now Louisville will have two crazed coaches shouting at them.  Could be a bit confusing.

I thought after Grantham's statement following the regular season about not caring about fans calling for his job and then saying his "body of work" spoke for him, that it was time for him to go.

His body of work was 3 duds and a good year.  In none of those years did he do anything well except putting pressure on the QB.  Our run defense stunk until this year and our secondary wiped out any progress on that front.

I've said for quite a while that his scheme is too complex for the college game.  All it does is sew confusion for the defenders.  You can't attack when you are sorting through a zillion reads.  So at this point I am thinking that virtually anybody is better.

I am glad to see these young men say they are committed to Georgia and not any coach.

If Grantham is not 100% committed to UGA then I am happy he is leaving.

I want a coach who is hungry and has a chip on his shoulders.  I want a coach who believes in playing  D with reckless abandon.  I want a coach who shows no mercy.

I have no doubt Coach Richt will make a great hire.

I cant believe this dude is really stuck on money like this... and leave the players hanging! and recruits. Its only 150K more a year. He is a good fit for Petrino I hope both failed

The players can still major in housing and smoke their blunts....nothing is changing at UGa so you recruits are still going to love it. August National Champs, November State Champs & January Disappointments everything will be as it always is in Athens.

My secret squirrel has told me that Kirby Smart will be the new DC in Athens... the deal was done last week before Kirby left for a vacation to Florida...

Welcome home Kirby!

Coach Right, get on phone with commits and let them know their commitments will be honored.

The most disturbing thing on this post is the recruits picture. UGA is better off without Grantham. I knew he would not be UGA DC next year. When you give up the most points in school history, not good.

Mulk

He will not last long in the ACC. You have to know HOW to coach in this conference and not rely solely on talent. All that talent and he was still outmatched in almost every game.

May miss Grantham's recruiting...his coaching / scheme was questionable...now time for Mark Richt to earn his money....nobody available in the video room?? Hire Kirby....give him $1.5 million...and make HC after next year... Mark Richt needs ro go on the Mack Brown plan...step aside respectfully and move over for new young blood....example..FSU and watch Texas soon!!!

Really fast contact with commits/prospects, Michael; I'm impressed - although it makes me wonder if you have a life as it is Sunday afternoon/evening ;-)

Have a great night. JM

Good riddance!  Grantham under achieved with awesome talent on hand.  You young Dawgs just hang in there and tell your buds to come on down to Georgia, there is going to be a new resurgence of the Junkyard Dogs!!!!   Woof-woof!

Will this be one less reason for Georgians to hate Patrino or one more?

@HotDawg  now that is funny........MOST recruits

want playing time as soon as possible to get to the NL as soon as possible.

want easy classes so they can stay eligible and not take too much time so they can work on getting better to get to the NFL.

want to go to schools with coaches that get players in the NFL.

Few kids really care too much about playing for the SCHOOL as much as they care about the promise from the coach to get the kid NFL ready.

The Kids that care about getting a good education care more about the School and if they can play in the NFL for a few years that is a huge bonus. Most of the good players are not smart enough to even be in college so the easier the school with the best shot at making it to the NFL fast is the real thing the KIDS PLAY for.

did you read the article in the AJC..... http://blogs.ajc.com/news-to-me/2014/01/10/death-threats-after-college-athlete-literacy-study/?cxntfid=blogs_news_to_me

How can ANY  GT fan point at UGA and talk about disappointments.  At one time I thought you were a part of the classy GT fans but you don't even bother to comment factually!!!!!

Just another inbred doofus trying to be entertaining!!!!!!!!!

@Dawg-Gawn We can hope. Like Muschamp, he may need to get out from under Saban's shadow to make a name for himself. At UGA, he would no doubt have more reign of the defensive side of the ball.

Gandolph

@Dawg-Gawn I hope not.  Kirby didn't seem to have an answer to AU's offense or any up-tempo offense this year or last.  He looked confused on the sideline.

@Mulk Outmatched in every game? You have a short memory my friend. And the stats over Grantham's tenure suggest that you are wrong too.

Mulk

@falcon298 UGAG will not be entertaining home and home in the near future with any decent team. They would be idiots to go to Louisville and lose every other year. Safer to lose to a "highly ranked" SEC team like Vandy and Florida.

If Tech puts up 500 or so on all that talent, I can't imagine what they will do to "normal" talent.

This can't be a confirmed story - no SEC coach leaves for a similar position in another conference.

You guys love to dish it but you can't take it yourselves. When all of your crazy guys stop posting Crap on the tech blog, maybe these tech fans will stop posting Crap (however accurate it may be) here.

@Snagglepuss @POAD2013 and the last 2 years haven't been disappointments?

Not winning the SEC last year when so close? This year?

You know the D with all that talent has been a Huge Disappointment to 80% of the UGa fanbase. If that isn't FACT what more FACTS do you need.
