New UGA target will meet with Bulldogs this weekend

By Michael Carvell

  • UPDATE: Tavon Ross will leave for an official visit to UGA on Friday night after his basketball game, according to his high school coach

The recipient of UGA’s newest scholarship offer will meet with the Bulldog coaches this weekend.

Tavon Ross is a 3-star safety from Bleckley County High School who has been committed to Missouri last August. Ross got a late offer from UGA last Friday.

“Georgia has had their eye on him for a while,” Bleckley County coach Tracy White told the AJC. “I don’t know what caused it to happen now. They’ve been talking to him for a little while. They just called and said they were going to offer, and they did. It was good for Tavon.”

What was Tavon’s reaction to the UGA offer? “I think he’s interested a little bit,” White said. “But Missouri has been on him so long. They were the first and only big school for a while. But I think he will take a look at Georgia.”

The 6-foot, 200-pounder projects as a safety for UGA. “He’s physical and athletic,” White said. “He’s got the size and speed, and he will hit people. He’s just a great athlete. He could play a lot of positions, but UGA wants him at safety.”

Missouri coaches are aware of the situation, and they have more than UGA to worry about. Miami entered the sweepstakes with an offer on Monday night, while Auburn and UNC have also expressed interest.

“They (Missouri) knows how recruiting works,” White said. “They just reminded him that they were there with him first, and they’ve been with him the whole time. They’ve wanted him since before his senior season.”

What’s next for Ross? He has reserved the last weekend before signing day for an official visit to Missouri. This weekend, he will either take an official visit to UGA, or welcome the Bulldog coaches to his high school basketball game on Friday. Miami coaches will also be there. If he doesn’t go to UGA this weekend, he will try for Jan. 24.

“We’ll see what happens,” White said. “He’s interested enough in Georgia to go up there and see what they have to say.”

As Bleckley County this past season, Ross started at quarterback and safety. He had 87 tackles and six interceptions, returning four for touchdowns. He rushed for 652 yards and 10 touchdowns and passed for 734 yards and eight touchdowns while leading Bleckley to the second-most wins in school history.

Note: You can watch Ross’ film HERE. He’s a good-looking athlete, with good speed, above-average quickness, and ridiculous feet. On defense, he lives and dies for making the big hit.

Get T. Ross and find a serious DL coach that can recruit against Garner.....I was not a fan of coach O, he didn't sub enough for me and I didn't view him as a big time recruitor.

There's 2 4Star safeties committed to Vandy right now, and if they aren't considering jumping ship to play for Pruitt then well.....they need more than just our help.

Dawg-Gawn.....believe Kirby Smart asked for the Head Coach in Waiting and UGA would have none of that crazy idea.

Stay with Mizzou. They wanted you before anybody. Georgia is just trying to get you because their other options fell through

Coaching at UGa is like going to the The VARSITY.

Your mouth waters as you think about the meal and walk in to order it.

After you finish the meal you are just left crapping your pants thinking  WHY DI I DO THAT?....

UGa is the GREATEST JOB in the college football world...............

It has been since Herschel Walker....his sister and the the UGa backers paid for a Trans Am..chose UGa in 1979...but Name us 1...ONE...Any...UGa coach that has gone on to GREAT THINGS after being the UGa head coach! The BEST a UGa coach can hope for is to be a coach that isn't a HC.

Pruitt is smart....he used the MEDIA HYPE to leave FSU to get money at UGa and if he is SMART he will leave UGa on the media hype to a GOOD JOB.

The longer a coach stays at UGa the more his STOCK DROPS...FACT.

NAME a UGa coach that has gone on to better things HIGHER at his position.

Pruitt certainly would deserve a big raise, that's for sure.

If Pruitt comes as the Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Back Coach do you think he will bring Charles Kelly who Coaches Special Teams and Linebackers. That would sure kill two birds with one stone.

Georgia never played fast enough for the 3-4. That is why we were in the 4-3 or 5-2 most of the time the last 6 games. It will not be hard to officially switch back to the 4-3. Anything the will eliminate all the confusion we witnessed from the Secondary last year.

Safety Shaquille Fluker just transferred out from UGA therefore opening up a last minute roster spot.... creating the opportunity and dream that only a few athlete's are able to experience for Tavon Ross... and that is to play for his home state university... close to Tavon's family & friends....

Mark Richt has issued a gag order at BM... all leaks have been stopped... the 24 hour period is approaching for the completed offer that went out yesterday... could be an announcement out of BM this afternoon...

Funny... the two positions advertised by UGA are for a DC and LB coach not a DB coach... you figure it out...

@DishonestUninformed - To put it politely, you are an idiot.  There are so many inaccuracies in your post I don't even know where to begin.  "UGA will be changing from a 3-4 to a 4-3"?  Seems odd to me that you could know this before a DC has even been hired.  Late offers to recruits is a common practice for ALL schools, regardless of coaching situations.

If your QB1 is transferring to a D2 school, the least of your concerns should be what's going on in Athens.  Now kindly return to the shallow end.

Even @TampGator1 can see your football envy.

ruffdawg....

Read the story.  Missouri was the only big time school to offer him until recently.  His offers have probably more to do with spots opening and developing needs at Georgia and Miami than anything else, and little to do with player evaluation.  Miami has lost some commitments lately and it looks like J.C. Jackson is going to stick with his Florida commitment, which means Miami is most likely looking at signing another DB to its class.  Georgia obviously needs depth at safety and JHC's recent activities probably put more emphasis on that need.   And an in state recruit makes for a better late effort to add to Georgia's class.  Now...player development once a player gets on campus..... might be another question or concern for schools and their coaches....which is one of the reasons Peace and Davis were fired and Roper and Summers were hired at Florida.....for example.

Man....the AJC is trying EVERYTHING they can to downplay the negative recruiting impact caused by the departure of Grantham.

So many positive spin stories AND they are replacing blogs in a HURRY if the comments expose the obvious.

Face facts people: UGA will lose a few recruits with Grantham bolting from UGA and UGA will be changing from the 3-4 to the 4-3 this season. Several high profile recruits who were considering UGA have already officially dropped UGA from consideration since the news broke!  just wonder how many recruits will change from UGA to a different school as a result of the problems and unknown future at UGA.

When these same sort of incidents happen at GT.......the AJC staff writes ultra-negative headlines designed to hurt GT recruiting efforts and then thy leave the articles on the front page of the web-site for as long as possible. Think back to the Al Groh firing and recently with the Vad Lee decision.......sad and childish behavior for grown adults who claim to be professional journalists.

I went out to the Missouri game last year and it was really hard to get there. I hope he stays at home and develops into a DGD.

I can't believe it took us this long to offer , no...yes I can .....we need some defensive coaches that can evaluate     football players with a high football IQ....This player looks as good as any DB in and out state...I give Missouri credit  they're great at talent evaluation and it reflected  in their play.

It's just Jimmy Sexton leveraging (using media) to get a bump in pay for Jeremy Pruitt (and himself) from FSU... as far as I know only one offer has been extended... and to one coach only!

Why do you think Kirby fell through? My guess is he still had some people at Georgia that resented him the last time he turned down the job. Also, the buy out was too high and by going with Pruitt Georgia saves $750,000 because it would have taken 1.5 Million to get Smart. What do you think?
