Georgia Tech’s coaches back on road after snow

Georgia Tech has 18 commits for 2014 (AJC)

Georgia Tech’s football staff was back on the road recruiting on Wednesday after being slowed down by weather conditions the night before.

“All our guys are out there,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson told the AJC. “Some of them got stuck. But they are all out.”

College coaches from across the country, including UGA’s Mark Richt, had their recruiting efforts in Atlanta impacted by Tuesday’s icy weather. Johnson was recruiting in North Carolina on Tuesday morning and returned to Atlanta around 1 p.m.

“I got back in before it got totally crazy,” Johnson said. “We had coaches that got stuck in Augusta, Milledgeville, and all over. (Defensive coordinator Ted Roof) got stuck in Mobile, Ala. He was trying to get to Nashville, so he drove to Tampa. Instead of coming this way, they went the other way to catch flights out. Everybody was pretty much in place by today.”

Johnson had to cancel an in-home visit with a prospect on Wednesday, and will likely have to do the same for an out-of-state kid on Thursday.

“I had one scheduled today that we had to cancel because they’re not in school. Because a big part of it, especially with the kids committed, is to go by the schools. I think that is just as important or more important than to get into the home.

“We have one in Charleston tomorrow that we’re probably going to have to cancel because there’s no school. And Charleston is as bad or worse than here (in Atlanta). They are not used to it (the weather situation) either.”

With the NCAA’s “dead period” starting at midnight Sunday and signing day less than a week away (Feb. 5), Johnson didn’t think he would get to make up the in-person visits.

“We’re so close to signing day but it’s OK,” Johnson said. “Most of the people we’re recruiting that we have left, I’ve already been in their homes so I can’t go again anyways.”

ALL OF THIS JUST HAPPENED

This is what I'm talking about:

"The buildings on the east and west sides of the stadium will rise nine stories and include premium seating, increasing the capacity of Notre Dame Stadium from 80,795 to more than 84,000, although widening seats on the benches could cut down the number of seats. The press box will be moved from the west to the east side."

That's from ESPN. Ignore that part about 84,000  capacity. Bobinski needs to focus on widening the bleacher seats and rewarding the fans who do actually attend games and add just a bit of incentive for more to attend.

Our chances with Rodgers have improved because GOL got tired of Rodgers slow-playing UCF and looking around so GOL went out and got a verbal commit from a player that plays the same position at the same size (6-0 180 lbs. - DB) as Rodgers but is rated a 4* recruit.

His name is Kyle Gibson and he is a ESPN Top-300 National Recruit and a Rivals Top-250 National Recruit.

When it comes to Recruiting GOL doesn't mess around.

Great pick up for UCF and hopefully a great pick up for us if Rodgers will flip from UCF.

So Ted Roof was finally able to end up driving SOUTH to Tampa to make the flight back up NORTH in time for his visit in Nashville with Tech's other Coaches, who ended up driving all night to get there.

Hopefully, Sawyers, and his family, will appreciate how much effort these guys went through to see them and recognize that as their symbol of how much the Tech program wants Sawyers in Atlanta to play for the Jackets.

How did Gailey get those NFL prospects to come to Tech? Many of his recruits are playing in the NFL including Bay Bay Thomas who will play for Denver in the Super Bowl.

I am always a amazed at the volume of uga fans on the tech sites.  must not have much to do.

Since I don't look at their sites, are they filled with tech fans?

Hopefully we will get the kids we are after, ones that can stay in school without problems and graduate.

Yep, the 2014 recruiting class is dismal. Nothing to do with CPJ and his antiquated TO offense...just business as usual. Now let's see who is "SMART" enough to to play for GT's sophisticated program. #elitistforever

@Delbert_D

ND had better not raise the height of the stands on the north end of the stadium - the library side.

@JacketMan

For 2 years Sawyers would get to play in the SEC and get to play next to Nkemdiche, I'm not sure GT can top that especially getting to play on the same DLine as a game changer like Nkemdiche.

Smart players know the value of playing around other great players, when an OM recruiter puts in the tape of the MC-bowl I wonder how will a GT recruiter respond.

@JacketMan At one point, there were rumblings that GT might be making a run at trying to flip DT Jamiyus Pittman, who ended up flipping from Ole Miss to UCF.  Any word on what happened there?

@Guyon Really?  "Many" of Gailey's recruits are playing in the NFL?   No team has "many" recruits playing in the NFL.   Hell, the overwhelming majority of players at Alabama will spend the same number of days on an NFL roster and I did.

GTBob
GTBob

@Guyon At this point in Gailey's career he had only 2 players that he recruited that were drafted into the NFL. CPJ so far has 1. Wow, such a major difference.

@Guyon

Because under pre pj, players had a much better shot at playing in the nfl than they do now. Even the most obvious position, rb, gt can't get a top notch recruit while uga gets several year after year.

In a word, yes. Mostly immature haters. Same as here.

Yep, OkieDawg's is obsessing over Ga Tech again.  Nothing to do with his intelligence and lack of class...just business as usual.  Now let's see if he can somehow find a way to GET A LIFE

Yup 2014 recruiting class is another top ten for uga as usual, and as usual nothing productive or memorable will come of it. #underachieversforever #trollsforafanbase

@MikeBanning In the same way a UGA recruiter would if presented with a recruit choosing between them and Nebraska?  Or Auburn.   Or Vandy.

The four guys to watch are Autry, Whitehead, Rodgers, and Sawyers. Pittman did, in fact, ended up at UCF if I'm not mistaken, but regardless, these have been our main priorities all along. At this point, we can get any or all of them; the Coaches are working their tails off. I think this Class may end with a bang, personally, but we'll see.

@GeorgeStein@GuyonGeorgia  has  43 , LSU has  40, Florida, Fsu 38, Miami 45 players  currently on NFL rosters. Gailey has  12 players he  recruited  that are currently still in the NFL., not  sure how many he recruited  played in the NFL. Players like Mike Cox, Nesbitt aren't included in the 12.

GeorgeStein
GeorgeStein

@GTBob  Actually, I think we have two right now - Stephen Hill and Rod Sweeting.

MikeBanning
MikeBanning

@GeorgeStein

UGA is .500 vs. Nebraska in the last 2 years, over the last 10 is something like 6-4 or 7-3 vs. Aubie and  they have lost to Vandy 2 or 3 times in the last 10.

Compare that to us going 1-15 vs. the Big-4, 1-3 in bowl games, for a sum total of 2-18 over the last 5 years in our bigger games.

That 2-18 is .100 winning percentage.

Why not worry about improving GT first and foremost instead of pointing to what is going on with another FB program?

@dawgs01  thats what he said bc i think yall had like 19 or a little less or little more but somewhere in there last yr and of course uga had like 33.

We had 14.  And 1 was a kicker.

Facts.  They invented this site called Google.  You should check it out.....

AugustaJacket
AugustaJacket

@dawgs01 The yr befor in the class UGA got gurley and marshall we only had 17 recruits and we finished ranked like 5th-8th depending on which site you looked at so it was ranked higher than the class of 33 and in fact last yr's class was one of the lowest ranked classes

Two 5 star recruits drives the rankings a ton.

Keep practicing the trolling, though...

AugustaJacket

@dawgs01  CPJ last yr had a class ranked a couple of spots ahead of Georgia Southern and lower than App state and i am telling you with Georgia Southern and App state coming into division one this yr it will hurt some of Tech's recruiting in the future and I now tech fans dont want to hear that and will think i am just being a jerk but as long as CPJ is there yall will have to start competing with GASouthern who in a few yrs will be at the top of the sunbelt.

Let's check facts here.

This is the link to the 2013 Rivals team rankings:

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/teamrank/2013/all/all

There are 123 teams ranked.  APP ST and GSU are not among them.

This is the link to 247 sports 2013 team rankings:

http://247sports.com/Season/2013-Football/TeamRankings

AppSt was ranked 124th, or 50 spots below GT,  GSU was 130th.

Before you spout off opinions, you should make sure your facts are in order.

Keep practicing your trolling.  You aren't any good at it.

@MikeBanning i want to point something out and i am not taking a shot at GaTech but more so of what the coach said and a bunch of CPJ supporters were saying last yr that simply was not accurate and no one pointed it out on the radio here in Atlanta or in the ajc blogs.  Last yr CPJ was questioned about the fact the recruiting analyst did not think much about the incoming class bc of such a low ranking.  CPJ response was this, "when you have a small class such as we did due to minimum rosters spot your class will not get ranked as high as a school with 30 incoming freshmen thats just the facts."  thats what he said bc i think yall had like 19 or a little less or little more but somewhere in there last yr and of course uga had like 33.  Basically while defending his class, he was also saying the only reason uga's class is ranked high is bc of all the recruits coming in.  His answer was totall BS.  The yr befor in the class UGA got gurley and marshall we only had 17 recruits and we finished ranked like 5th-8th depending on which site you looked at so it was ranked higher than the class of 33 and in fact last yr's class was one of the lowest ranked classes Coach Richt has brought in.  This yr uga has like 18 kids right now and is ranked 7th-12th depending on site.  CPJ's class last yr was ranked low bc of the quality of recruits not bc of class size.  Class size only hurts you when you get in that top 7 area not the top 50.  CPJ last yr had a class ranked a couple of spots ahead of Georgia Southern and lower than App state and i am telling you with Georgia Southern and App state coming into division one this yr it will hurt some of Tech's recruiting in the future and I now tech fans dont want to hear that and will think i am just being a jerk but as long as CPJ is there yall will have to start competing with GASouthern who in a few yrs will be at the top of the sunbelt.  Anyway that was his excuse last yr and everyone bought it and believed him even though the yr befor UGA had a smaller class than the class that tech just had that he was defending saying the class size hurt their recruiting grade.

@MikeBanning Kudo's to Pj , he's within 6  spots of  passing  Western Michigan in the  recruiting  rankings. He  claims he  doesn't  care a bout the rankings  and proves it year after year.

@MikeBanning Completly agree with you Banning. Gailey was puttint  8-10 players  on All teams his  last  2 seasons  at Gt . PJ had  what ? 3 or  4 he's  recruited.

@wrecked @GeorgeStein @Guyon

Forget the NFL!

Simply look at all the All-ACC players that Gailey had in HIS LAST 4 YEARS and compare that to the LACK of All-ACC players that CPJ has had in his last 4  years.
