Former UGA football player commits to Alabama (UPDATED)

By Michael Carvell

Former UGA TE Ty Flournoy-Smith (AJC)

Ty Flournoy-Smith, who was dismissed from UGA after getting into trouble a couple of times, committed to Alabama on Monday night.

Flournoy-Smith played this season at Georgia Military junior college and took an official visit to Alabama last weekend without a scholarship offer. He got a call from Nick Saban on Monday, and tweeted out his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

Flournoy-Smith was dismissed from UGA after getting in trouble twice during his freshman year. He was first arrested for filing a false report of a crime for cashing in text books he had reported as stolen. The last straw was when police were called to a room occupied by Flournoy-Smith and Josh Harvey-Clemons. Neither player was arrested but both admitted to police they smoked marijuana and were disciplined for violating the UGA athletic department’s marijuana-use policy.

At Georgia Military this season, Flournoy-Smith worked hard on and off the field to turn around his career. He caught six passes for 134 yards, including five for touchdowns.

“It was going really good until he broke his foot,” Georgia Military coach Bert Williams told the AJC. “He got rolled up blocking a guy in our third or fourth game. He made it back for the last regular-season game and bowl game. He wasn’t 100-percent but he was out there.

“He did a really good job for us. I would’ve liked to have had him for the whole season. But it was good he came back to show people he was healthy.”

At first, Flournoy-Smith appeared headed to Ole Miss but things didn’t work out.

“Ole Miss had offered him, and he was more or less going to go there,” Williams said. “He liked what they had going on. He was wanting to take a visit to Ole Miss and make sure everything was fine. Then they started hemming and hawing, and it wasn’t going to work. We made a few calls, and Alabama had a high interest level. They had to see how the (scholarship) numbers worked out first.”

Flournoy-Smith impressed Georgia Military’s coaches in his brief stint there. He will graduate after this quarter and be eligible to transfer to Alabama with two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“We haven’t had any problems with Ty,” Williams said. “He has done fine in the Cadet Corps. He has worked hard on the field, and he has done well in the classroom. He came in with a good attitude, and he was really helpful with some of our freshmen guys. He has shown good leadership in helping them get past the freshmen challenges they all deal with. We’ve been very pleased with him. He’s a good young man and will do well.”

What about UGA? When Flournoy-Smith transferred from the Bulldogs, Richt didn’t rule out the possibility of a return.

“I spoke with Georgia about Ty back during the season,” Williams said. “While they would’ve liked to have brought back in, they felt like it was best for him to go somewhere with a fresh start, which is why he was looking for other opportunities.”

Flournoy-Smith played mostly special teams as a freshman at UGA during the 2012 season, and he will have two years of eligibility at Alabama.

I wish Georgia would quit punishing players for smoking marijuana. Players need a safe alternative to Opiates and NSAIDS.

He won't have to worry about selling textbooks at bama.

They don't have any, because they don't know what they are.

If they did, they'd probably burn them, anyways!

Is this really a surprise a school in the SEC, with lax discipline policies , takes a former UGA player with discipline problems?

Of course we all know bamalama players NEVER smoke pot, because none are ever disciplined for such. Or anything else for that matter.

It's only all those Georgia players, right? Gimme a break.

He'll fit in well with the bamards that sweep everyrhing under the rug.

Florida was way down below the 85 man limit last year and needed more than 29 players to get it close to 85 for 2013.  The 29 (with several being early enrollees and counting back to 2012) did not get Florida to the 85 roster limit, and Florida was able to award scholarships to several walk on players as a result.  That is a lot different from what Saban does at Bama......he over signs  (as he is doing this year) and then releases players from scholarships from previous classes to get back down to the 85 limit by the fall.  Florida does not do that...and Florida has a strict policy about not ever going over the 85 limit.  Just so you know.

Pretty much dead until tomorrow. I hope Richt and Pruitt are using this time to find a Linebacker Coach and nothing says they can't Recruit 2015 Recruits. Go down to Albany's Westover High and get that Defensive player to commit that is so good.

What a peanut gallery we have in here in one corner you have Alabama and the other UGA doing everything it can to look like Alabama.

Simon says:

Alabama recruits Juco players > UGA starts recruiting Juco players.

Alabama runs a 3-4 Scheme on D  > UGA hires in bad coach and runs a 3-4 scheme.

Alabama wins the SEC/BCSCG > well........

Alabama has top coaches > UGA tries to hire Alabama coaches.

What's next UGA going to ask for a home game in Bryant Denny stadium?

We probably would let you because it would make Auburn scream.

UGA is Alabama's dawg  no doubt about that.

I see that Chris Williams Did flip from Bama to UCF.

Guess he decided to go to Alabama rather than to go to college. I am sure Lane Kiffin will be a good influence on his life.

Word is Elisa Shaw will commit to Bama on NSD.....but he will not play football due to his injury. He will be given a medical scholly and be able to go to college. This is the chatter on Al Gore's interwebs. We see tomorrow.

Wow Bama never shocks me any more. How many players will they run off this year to get under the 85 rule?

Seems like this kid has some serious game skills and after a year in military school has his head screwed on right.

Makes you wonder with all the arrests over in Athens from student athletes WTF is going on in that wild place?

WetWillie, I basically agree with you about the kid.

But don't give these mutts a chance to declare a moral superiority

over us. They can do it on their own without our help.

Hey Buckethead

" I am glad that Ty has taken the opportunity to get a fresh start and that he has apparently turned his life around. However it still ticks me off that SEC schools take kids who were kicked out of member schools."

You full of it. No damn way you care about this kid and want him to turn his life around.

You're just mad Bama got him and he might come back and kick some Ga butt.

Boy, Nick Marshall came back  and really kicked some Ga butt.

How bad did that make you mad?

We'll just add him to an already formidable no. 1 ranked recruiting class yet again.6 Parade all Americans, 6 of them are 5 star recruits with a possible 7th 5 star coming on board tomorrow. Frankly I'm embarrassed at our wealth of recruiting talent. The rich just keep on getting rich.

Lot of analysts are saying this may be the most talented recruiting class of all time and certainly the most talented of Nick Saban's various top ranked classes at Bama. All we need is for them to come in being hungry and for the present players to be upset over a subpar season. 11-2 may be incredible at Georgia. But this is Alabama. 11-2 is subpar and simply unacceptable.

This is a stupid policy that Richt allows. This is another reason why he will never win us a national championship @UGA

Tampa, seriously ... kids left Gainesville like there was a gold rush and I'm sure your coach was begging each and everyone of them to stay. Looks like Will has his own "process" but just gets the racket back earlier.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie
KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

What you meant to say Tampa was Will ran off many players but that is ok since it's Florida. It's great that UF doesn't greyshirt anybody and the 50 arrest of these past 5-6 years is even more impressive!

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie Good for Elisha. I was hoping he would be doing his rehab in Athens though. Isis Taylor is not going to be happy to hear this.

thebucket

@SeeRockCity I wonder which student athlete that has never been in trouble, but is just not as gifted athletically as Ty, will have to get cut to make room?

thebucket
thebucket

@SeeRockCity It's called the police doing their job. College kids get in trouble. It happens everywhere and every team is recruiting out of the same gene pool. Some places you get caught and the first offense is made public, some places you don't and the drug policy is not as strict.

thebucket
thebucket

@WhiskeyBreath Wet Willie is being intellectually honest. You can cheer for your school when they do well and criticize them when you think they are wrong and still be a fan.

thebucket
thebucket

@WhiskeyBreath So do you not know how to use the new reply feature on the blog when you want to address someone specifically? Some of your own Bama brethren are not elated that Saban took a kid who was kicked out of a member school, so do they hate kids and are they afraid he might help Bama beat UGA? I also think this makes Saban a hypocrite because he wouldn't allow Kamara to transfer to a SEC school, but he is willing to take a player who was kicked out of a member school. I personally feel that the SEC (in large part thanks to Bama and the SEC West's efforts) is the premier conference in college football. It should be considered an elite privilege to play for an SEC school and if a member school has to disqualify a player no other member school should take them.

@thebucket

I mean really - what has any other school gotten from UGA? LSU - starting QB. Auburn - starting QB. 'Bama - elite TE. Alabama State  - #1 running back in the nation.  We're just throwing them the crumbs <G>

GeoffDawg
GeoffDawg

How many underperforming upperclassmen are you cutting to make room for all these 5 stars?

Gandolph
Gandolph

@ThulsaDoom  Let's get this straight.  Kamara is granted a release from Bama on the condition that he cannot transfer and play for a SEC team.  However, Flurnoy-Smith can get kicked out of UGA and go to Bama, who arguably, is already 8 players over their numbers for the season.

Ahh, roster management at its finest.  Maybe that helps to account for all those natty's.  It probably helps to have a look-see at 5 extra recruits per year.

@Bubbatavious Since Ty played at Georgia Military last year there was nothing CMR could do about where Ty landed. But don't let the facts keep you from taking any opportunity to take a shot at CMR.

It's now going to be at least 24 years since the Gators have left the state of Florida for a regular season Non-Conference game. They used to play Miami and FSU and now it's just FSU (Idaho, Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky all home) fills the road non-conf. game. Their last non-conference road win (not in state) was AT Memphis in 1989 and their last win against a major non-conf. game (not in state) was Ga. Tech in September 1980 (Carter was in office).

This deal is not real clear at this time. Remember that 85 counts for folks enrolled at one time. Until tomorrow we will not know whether he signed a letter or a blank sheet of paper and the details to be worked out later. Most are saying his football days are over. Again this is rumor, lies,or some truth going around.

Gandolph
Gandolph

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie  Well then the high school kids and coaches need to know that before recommending Bama to anyone.  Right now you will have to run off nine players before the fall (includes this kid).

@thebucket @SeeRockCity

That reminds me of the great L.S.U. return specialist and Defensive Back. Matheu or something like that. It was reported that he got caught smoking pot 11 times at L.S.U. Spurrier isn't much on discipline either unless it get's to the point of embarrassing him. Actually  I wish when players like Marshall get caught stealing from his own teammates I wish Richt would let the team vote on whether to dismiss the thief or not. Marshall was a great players that could have been straightened out by his own peers.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie
KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

I was being honest...but I can't claim the intellectually part...what will college recruiting be like 6-8 years as far as the recruiting pool? Will the players get a 48 hour get out of jail card to play on the weekends? Kind of sad to see the direction.

@Gandolph @ThulsaDoom

Oh great white wizard - if you are looking for equity in this insane mix of football, money, power and politics, then you have truly been influenced by the dark lord!

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

When a player goes to Juco then he is free to sign with anybody he wants? If Alvin wanted to play in the SEC then he should go to GMS for a complete year and then he can sign with UGA if that is his deal. You can understand that right? Email me a pen and pad and I will draw you a picture.

@DawginLex @ThulsaDoom

A few years ago Florida had "the greatest recruiting class in history" - Muschamp inherited a lot of those kids. Something just happens to them when they get to Florida. It's never about the kids - it's about the coaching. I'm no 'Bama fan - I find some of their posters as delusional as some from UGA, but Saban has won everywhere he has been and that is proof of his ability to create winners. Like him, hate him, envy him or lick his boots - he gets it done. And in this business of college football which is really a BIG money business - his results, however achieved, are making lots of money for lots of people. And that makes him a very desired and powerful commodity.

thebucket

@DawginLex @ThulsaDoom I guess when your head coach is 0-6 lifetime against your biggest rival when they have at least 9 wins in a season you start to get desperate and take risks.

BAMABABE
BAMABABE

@DawginLex @ThulsaDoomya 4 losses in 3 years is so embarrassing...and 3 championships in 5 years....none of those recruits are paying off!!!

Bubbatavious
Bubbatavious

@thebucket he was dismissed by UGA.. If you commit to UGA and get dismissed you shouldn't be able to play in the SEC.. See Nick Marshall  and Zach Mettenburger.

thebucket
thebucket

@SeeRockCity @thebucket I don't know. I guess when the culture has shifted and most people, including the current POTUS, thinks that smoking a joint is just as safe as drinking beer, then we shouldn't be surprised that some of them are going to get caught.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie
KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

I am hearing Lane convinced Nick and staff to take this guy. He wants to run more sets with two TE's and Bama only has one that can really play. Nick will give the kid a chance but it will be one chance. We have already taken back one of the players involved in the student beating and that is enough...for me anyway. I am old school but this isn't our Father's college football anymore.

thebucket
thebucket

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie I obviously don't enjoy all of your posts, but you are a straight shooter and I applaud you for that. Bama is the king of the hill right now and I just don't understand why Saban would take some of the risks he has. Maybe people like me (and UGA coaches) are too cautious and maybe that's why we haven't won anything in awhile.

FrankFraticelli
FrankFraticelli

@thebucket @Bubbatavious

Really guys. Life is bigger than football. Let the kids go to the best school they can. They have a life to live too - and it will go on way after they tie their cleats or shag a pass for the last time.

thebucket
thebucket

@Bubbatavious @thebucket I agree with you on that point. However, in all of these cases the players went to JUCO for a year and so UGA had no say so about where they went. In my opinion the SEC office needs to step up with a rule that forbids schools from accepting athletes who were dismissed from another member school.
