There’s ’95-percent chance’ UGA commit will stick with Bulldogs

By Michael Carvell

UGA is at risk at losing three commits by signing day, but it appears that the Bulldogs may have gotten past a rough spot with the recruit who has “Georgia Bulldogs” tattooed in gigantic letters across both forearms.

Lamont Gaillard is a 4-star defensive tackle from Fayetteville, N.C., who has been committed to UGA since last summer.

Gaillard took a last-minute visit to Miami over the weekend, and told Scout.com’s Chad Simmons on Sunday night that he would need to talk to his coaches and family before rendering a final decision.

By Monday evening, it appeared to be a much better situation for UGA, his coach told the AJC.

“I think he’s going to stick with Georgia,” Pine Forest High School coach Bill Sochovka said. “I’m pretty sure that’s the route he is going to go. He asked if Georgia faxed the papers yet for him to sign. I guess that’s a good sign.

“Miami did a great job recruiting Lamont, and it’s nothing against Miami. It was good for him to see at the time. After all the coaching changes at Georgia, it was good for Lamont to see another place.

“But I’m 95-percent sure he’s going to Georgia, unless something happens between now and Wednesday. I think he’s going to be a Bulldog.”

There has been some understandable confusion between Gaillard and UGA due to the massive coaching changes on defense. Gaillard committed to former UGA coaches Todd Grantham and Chris Wilson. Were the new coaches as high on Gaillard as the previous staff?

On Monday, Sochovka talked directly to Richt about that topic.

“Coach Richt said he was 100-percent committed to Lamont,” Sochovka said.

That appeared to have addressed the concerns, but as soon as the coach hung up with Richt, Gaillard entered the classroom and told his coach that he had heard that a defensive tackle had switched his commitment from Florida State to UGA this weekend (Note: We’re not aware of that happening, but there’s always endless surprises in this business)

In an attempt to clear up that confusion, Gaillard talked over the phone with UGA defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt for around five minutes.

“I asked Lamont ‘Are you good now?’” Sochovka said. “Lamont told ‘Yes, I’m good.’

“But I’ve got Miami’s letter-of-intent for Lamont on my desk. I told the Miami coach that I’m not going to send it back until I know everything is done on Wednesday. I said ‘Either you’ll get it faxed to you or I’ll send it back when he signs with Georgia.’

“To the best of my knowledge, he is Georgia-bound unless something weird happens.”

There’s a predictable trend with the three UGA commits who are a risk to flip – all three are out-of-state commits.

Safety Kendall Gant of Lakeland, Fla., took a “secret visit” to Marshall and may switch due to “academic reasons.”

Wide receiver Gilbert Johnson of Miami will decide on Wednesday if he’s going to stick to UGA or switch to South Florida or Louisville, according to Rivals.com

Will friend is going to sign 4 OL this year. That's an okay number...I agree he needs to step up in his recruiting....but we may of not hired Pruitt without will because they are good friends and they were talking once a week. So we are kind caught up in a trap with will friend.

You know these coaches will be so glad when NSD (Nick Saban Day) is in the books. Take a week off and start on 2015. Wait Bama had their 1st Jr Day last Saturday with 2 commits. 24/7/365. The coaches are paid very well but no doubt that is a tuff line of work.

I think this guy is going to stick with Georgia, I heard he told Coach Richt that he was not a very good cold weather player and Coach Richt told him " no problem, we play our Bowl games either in Orlando or Tampa most every year "

Why is any recruit worrying about competition?

When you get to the higher level of anything worthwhile, there will always be competition.

DawgGoneIt is correct.....Will Friend is hurting the DAWGS!!! Only 3 OL recruited last year....and following the same trend this year....it was stated @ the first of the recruiting season that UGA needed 6 more OL....and Friend can only muster 3??? He got his last OL commit on 07/14/13...that was a big pickup in Isaiah Wynn....but WF what have you been doing for the last 7 months....eating @ the Golden Corral w/ Rodney Garner of AU??? No sniff of any JC OL.....why did you not pursue D Kelley these days harder...looks like he is going to LSU or FSU....if he can play for them; why not the DAWGS?? Time for you to work and quit just collecting a paycheck!!! (BTW: Will Friend....you were the main recruiter for Wesley Green who you whiffed on....was in your recruiting territory; and Mitch Hyatt of N Gwinnett is not even giving you any consideration....UGA should have gotten Jeff Grimes...he left Va Tech to go to LSU....my question: CMR do you really want to win a NC???

Wednesday can't get here fast enough. What would it matter if we got another Defensive Lineman from F.S.U. Last I checked we need more than one Lineman. If he is worried about starting, Don't. You can never have too many Linemen. Georgia needs 2 if not 3 deep without compromising talent. They all get plenty of playing time. What Lamont needs to focus on is how many Defensive Linemen Georgia has sent to the NFL in the last 14 years.

Great news! Couldn't lose out on this big boy! Need LINE OF SCRIMMAGE players. This guy fits the bill. Now only if Will Friend will recruit more O-linemen.

I believe Gant is gone to Marshall but UGA just got a commitment from his replacement Shaq Jones who is also from Fl.  Jones was committed to Louisville.  Pruitt 1 Grantham 0.

Here is a quote from his coach “In my mind, it probably solidified his decision to stay with Georgia,” Sochovka said. “Not saying Miami did anything wrong or bad or anything like that. It probably helped unconfuse him.”

And there you go.  Gaillard is as solid as any unsigned recruit.  That is still leaving a % for doubt just because of the craziness but that is the way it goes.

When the school you committed to changes DCs and you are in that no man's land where you don't really know where you stand with the new DC, it is totally understandable to go through some doubt.

He'll end up a Bulldog.

Hey BARN Boy!!!!

I assume you have heard that a former UGA TE has now signed with Bammy!!!  You probably would be better served worrying about UGA/DawgNation criminal castoffs being swallowed up by your instate superior than about the kind of weather UGA plays their Bowl games in. Apparenty your computer was out of order for all but ONE of the past 7 or 8 years because your absence was glaring. We missed you terribly during the 2012 season not explaining your 0 - 8 SEC record while Bammy and UGA were playing for the 2012 SEC Championship. In your defense I will admit that twice in the last decade BARN combed the country until they came up with a Florida criminal castoff and again this past season when y'all discovered a UGA criminal castoff. Seems criminal castoffs are the ONLY way BARN can safety avoid more 0 for 8 SEC seasons.

I'm curious as to how many teams in SEC history went 0 for 8.

@RandyHall We've got 17 scholarship O-line in school now (not counting seniors).  We play, what 8?  9? at most in a year.  Take a deep breath

Would you and DawgGone just  change teams or stifle yourselves. Dawg Nation has heard enough of your negative BS and would prefer that y'all help some other team.

Will Friend is NOT the HC or the OC so how stupid can y'all be to try to hang all that crap on WF???

From all reports WF is primarily responsible for UGA landing DC J.Pruitt but I assume you two dumbazzes think that WF can just go out and sign whoever he likes without any help or support from HC and OC!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Inbred Knuckleheads!!!

Don't forget that UGA averaged 40 points per game even after half our offensive firepower went down with injuries. You and your ilk are stupid enough to be triplets!!!!!!!

@RandyHall

I know , we are all frustrated about the up and down play of the Offensive Line last year when that was one position that didn't lose anyone to injury . They just played lousy at times, like they were not prepared very well. Hopefully Richt and Bobo will help Friend with Recruiting in 2014.

I have to give Will Friend at least one more year to prove he can land big time Offensive Linemen because if it wasn't for his friendship with Pruitt , I don't think he come to Georgia. Pruitt is so much better than Grantham as a Coordinator and Recruiter I can give Friend a little slack and be hopeful  he proves an obvious weak link in 2013 will be a strength in 2014.

@C-Kirk @RandyHall

You don't have to give Will Friend ANYTHING!!! He has done pretty damn good without any gifts from you!!!! You two know less about more than anyone posting on here!!!!!!!!
