UGA emerges as top contender for DL Andrew Williams

UGA was considered a long shot for one of the state’s top uncommitted football prospects until he took a last-minute official visit with the Bulldogs this weekend.

But now that 4-star defensive lineman Andrew Williams has toured UGA, the Bulldogs are considered top contenders, along with Clemson and Auburn. Williams will announce between the three schools at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy in McDonough.

Williams decided to visit UGA after Bulldogs assistants Jeremy Pruitt and Tracy Rocker showed at ELCA last Friday.

“I think he had a blast,” ELCA coach Jonathan Gess told the AJC. “Well, I know he did. I talked to him. I know he had a great time. He really enjoyed being with Coach Pruitt and Coach Rocker. Obviously, we’re a Christian school and we’re believers. We all love Coach Richt, and Drew loves Coach Richt. I have no idea where he is going to school. I just know he loved his UGA visit and had a great time. If he signs with Georgia on Wednesday, I wouldn’t be one bit surprised.”

During the UGA visit, Pruitt spent most of his time selling Williams on the idea that he would be a good fit at defensive end for his 3-4 formation.

“He really enjoyed meeting with Coach Pruitt,” Jonathan Gess said. “It’s like I mentioned before, Coach Pruitt came from the Saban 3-4 deal and he kind of played a 3-4 last year at Florida State. I think, over the course of the season at the Florida State, he moved to more utilizing a four-man front.

“The big selling point was how he was going to fit in Coach Pruitt’s scheme, and Drew was completely excited about how he would fit in Coach Pruitt’s scheme. I think he was obviously excited about Coach Prutt and Coach Rocker, what they believe and how he would fit into the defense. Drew really liked that. He had a great time, and he had all of his questions answered.”

Does UGA have a legitimate chance? “I definitely think that UGA is in the mix now. Now I’m not Drew, and I’m speaking as a third party. But Drew has never let on to me where he is going to go to school. It’s obviously a tough choice for a kid when they take it this close to signing day. But Georgia is in the mix. There’s no question about that.”

Williams is expected to keep a low profile over the next 48 hours.

“There’s no question that there’s pressure,” Gess said. “You are talking about three great men in Dabo Swinney, Mark Richt and Gus Malzhan. They are great coaches, but — more importantly — great men. From my standpoint, you would want your kid to play for another one of those guys.

“And Drew is just like me. He has relationships with all those coaches, and he’s close with all those men. It’s going to be hard for him. It’s going to be real hard. That’s the hardest part. At the end of the day, you’re letting two schools down that you built close relationships with. You really trust those men. So he’s feeling the pressure, definitely.”

If UGA came seemingly out of nowhere to steal Williams away from Clemson and Auburn, it would definitely be one of this year’s biggest recruiting surprises.

So it has come down to a who loves Jesus more between the three coaches.  I am sure Jesus will speak personally with him before Wednesday and tell him who his favorite college football team is....and it is not Ohio State.  I have that directly from Dawg-Gawn who talks personally to Jesus about football every day.

McKinzie is going to Va. Tech or Ole Miss.  Gators made a run but came up short, it appears.  He tweeted the other day that Va. Tech is his dream school, and they came late to the party and jumped up there with Ole Miss.  Georgia has no shot with him.

@TheBuckeye....

It never ends with you.  I honestly don't get what you get out of coming on here day after day and doing what you do.....troll.  Senseless and a waste of brain cells.  But, obviously, you are never going to stop doing it for whatever reason or reasons you have....which are completely beyond anyone else that posts on here.

Get ready.... to get your G on... dawgs!

First of all... UGA already has an outstanding 2014 class committed plus a whole new defensive coaching staff coming in... so any player added on NSD should just be consider as extra gravy on top of the meat...

Zo-Car @ 3:40 PM Feb 5th in the Duke House (white building overlooking the Norcross HS football field) should commit to the G... UGA commit Nick Chubb never left his side this weekend.

Kendarius Webster... a no show in Athens this weekend... Ole Miss

Wesley Green.... USCe

Tavon Ross... UGA 55% Mizzou 45%

Kendall Gant... Marshall (qualifying problems @UGA - short class)

Lamont Gaillard... UGA (still) but watch out for WR Gilbert Johnson

T. J. Harrell... Michigan State 60% UGA 40% (Ross' decision could quickly change this %)

The next two recruits coud turn-up the volume at the G a bit...

Andrew Williams @ 2:00 PM Eagles Landing Christian ... Auburn 65% UGA 35%

Bryson Allen-Williams... USCe 75% UGA 25% (could be USCe 50% UGA 50%... rumored SOS stepped on Sportsmommy's toe!... ouch that's a no-no)

A new 2014 UGA offer just went out to WR Isaiah McKenzie 5' 8" 175 lbs Fort Lauderdale, FL (American Hertiage) teammate of UGA commit Sony Michel

Shout-out to all of the UGA FB coaches for the awesome smash-mouth fourth quarter recruting effort....

I have to at least give Williams credit for realizing that Clemson and Auburn are two of Georgia's biggest rivals as far as Recruiting and that maybe 5% of what they were saying about Georgia was true. It's a game and if you can get a Recruit to believe everything you are saying about another school without him have sense enough to find out for himself then you can use it to poison him against another school without any comparison.

Truth is all three have great Coaches but very different School atmospheres. These Recruits need to visit all three and see which they are more suited for. Clemson and Auburn are more small town school country  atmosphere where Athens is a medium size town but a big city atmosphere. 75% of the kids are from the Atlanta area.

C-Kirk
C-Kirk

This is why these Recruit's need to visit as many schools as possible. Any College program is so much better than any High School that any school could WOW a Recruit. A lot of the kids that are going to out of state Colleges didn't even give Georgia a chance, they just let other Schools convince them that Georgia was not for them without even visiting the town of Athens and UGA and making up their own mind.

None of the Towns of any of the Colleges competing with Georgia for Recruits are better than Athens and most are not in Athens league . None have the proximity to Atlanta that Georgia does and of the 6 major Conferences, the SEC is # 1 and the ACC is # 6.

@TampGator1  How cynical can you be?  If that's important to a kid, why do you have to make something negative out of it?  Thought from reading other posts from you that you were above that nonsense.

Tamp,

you pray for a toy train or something and not get it as a child? You sound really butthurt over other's religious beliefs. If you choose not to believe, that's between you and God. Your mocking of others religious beliefs assures everyone that reads your post that you are intolerant and completely narrow minded. Funny how some seemingly educated individuals love to set themselves on a pedestal, lol...

@TampGator1 God's word is foolishness to unbelievers but to those that believe, it is nourishment to the soul. Christians are to practice/apply their faith in all they do. He may simply feel more comfortable with coach Richt and his staff.

@TampGator1   no it comes down to who the young man thinks loves Jesus the same way he does.  He goes to a Christian school and is taught that is the way decisions are made.  Not saying it is right or wrong.  It's just mindset.

@C-Kirk Athens now has a big city atmosphere? Does that mean the downtown is overcrowded with bars? I grew up there and visit often enough, and Athens doesn't remind me of big cities that I have visited. But, if your point is that compared to Clemson and Auburn, Athens is cosmopolitan, then I certainly agree with that.

Pitiful fraud.

Tampa...you need to give a break sport. You might ask yourself "What If I AM WRONG" and the others are correct. If we're wrong with our beliefs then we've enjoyed our journey regardless. If you're wrong then you sir are in a world of sheet!

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delightis in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish ~ Psalm 1:1-4 (NIV)

Since you last mocked me and the Spirit of God your Gator team has lost 7 straight games... not very wise from a human who lives on a flat landscape at only 105 feet above sea level and whose house is built on Limestone... have you checked for sinkholes lately?

That is what I was trying to do . Sorry I don't have the gift of sentence structure like some on here.

Also, I was thinking of the growth rate of Athens in the last ten years and it is projected  to continue for many year in the future. I'm a 76 graduate and retired . Waiting for my wife to retire in 3 years and Athens is one of our top picks to live. I don't think we are the only ones to pick Athens to retire in.
