Mark Richt on recruiting impact of UGA’s Jeremy Pruitt

By Michael Carvell

 (AP)

New UGA defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has learned recruiting from Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher the last few years (AP)

The true impact of new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt on UGA’s recruiting efforts won’t be known until later this year with the team’s 2015 class.

But there’s no doubt that Pruitt has impressed his boss so far.

“He came straight from his vacation to accepting the job,” UGA coach Mark Richt told the AJC. “He came straight in and started working. The first thing he did was to start watching videos of our (2014) commitments and anybody else in the state of Georgia that was on our board at one time or another, and that might’ve been committed to another school. I was like ‘Let’s just see who he wants to offer and try go to recruit.’ There was just a little time left before signing day.”

“And after signing day, my thought was that the first thing Jeremy was going to do with that defensive staff was to gather them together and teach them the system. Well, the first thing he wanted to do was look at ’15 and ’16 kids together as a staff. He knew we were behind on the defensive side of the ball with making offers and seeing film because of what had happened (with the coaching changes).

“His first thought was ‘Let’s get caught up on recruiting before we even start talking about football. We’ll have plenty of time to do that before we get started in the spring.’”

UGA’s approach to recruiting is undergoing changes, and you’re already seeing signs of that with how the Bulldogs are staggering unofficial visits over numerous weekends with top high school juniors so the coaches can more one-on-one time with them (as opposed to always-chaotic and overcrowded Junior Days that colleges are famous for having).

Richt is working with new UGA Recruiting Coordinator Bryan McClendon and Pruitt, among others, on modifications. Pruitt gained a lot of experience working three years as an assistant for the most decorated recruiter in college football (Nick Saban) at Alabama, along serving as defensive coordinator for FSU’s national championship team.

“I told McClendon, ‘Let’s look at what we do on a daily basis for the year and let’s get a plan for the amount of time that we’re going to spend as a staff on recruiting. So really, we’re already set up to where 50-percent of the time is football and 50-percent of the time is recruiting between now and the beginning of spring ball.

“Every single day, we’re evaluating film and making decisions on kids that are ’15 , ’16 and ’17 or whatever comes down the pipe, and making contact with the ones we’re allowed to, and talking to high school coaches.”

While doing the interview, Richt sat at a table in his plush office that overlooked UGA’s practice fields.

“For example, what you have at this table is all the linebackers that need to be viewed,” he explained. He then pointed to a small part of the table.

“If you’ve only see this many and you make your offers based on this, then when you start seeing the rest, it’s like ‘Man, I wished I had offered that guy before this one.’ If you can see a bigger pool before you say ‘This is who I want,’ then you make better decision. It’s better for your kids, and it’s better for your program.

“But if you’re making offers fast because you don’t want to get behind, and a kid says he wants to come but you say ‘well, that’s not a committable offer’ … We are not going to do that here at the University of Georgia. We want to be thorough and we want to be truthful about what we’re telling a guy.”

Again, it’s still early and you’ll need to wait until we get much closer to next February’s signing day to get a better idea of Pruitt’s total impact on UGA’s recruiting efforts. But Pruitt has already gotten some rave reviews from high school coaches in Gwinnett and DeKalb counties – two fertile areas for college prospects where the Bulldogs have struggled in recent years.

“Jeremy is a genuine guy, and a down-to-earth guy … so sure, coaches like him,” Richt said. “They’re going to love Ekeler, and Rocker is an Atlanta guy. He’s a Georgia guy who went to high school to Atlanta. He’s got a tremendous reputation, and people have a lot of respect for Rocker.

“So we absolutely strengthened ourselves in this area of recruiting.”

The rest of UGA’s new defensive staff consists of assistants Tracy Rocker, Mike Ekeler, and Kevin Sherrer.

Florida has a full roster of 85 scholarship players.  But thank you for your multiple juvenile posts.

I forgot about Ledbetter, a 3-star signee a couple of years back out of NC. He was not a starter and he never played much during the two years he was on the roster.  Maybe some special teams on kicks.  Was moved from SS to FB this year.  Just not good enough to play in the SEC.  Not sure where he transferred to.  Nice kid, however.

Also forgot about Silberman.  He was a backup guard and also graduated and transferred to Louisville to play his last year of eligibility for Charlie Strong.  Then Strong left Louisville.  Not sure what Silberman did after that.  Silberman would have remained a backup at Florida for his senior year.  He supposedly was going to start for Strong at Louisville, therefore the transfer.

Williams was a 4th string OL who was moved over from DE (was recruited as a DE out of the Atlanta area).  He would have never seen the field at Florida and transferred out, which opened a spot for this year's recruiting class and the Gators got the OT, Mike, from the state of Arizona who flipped from Vandy.  Gators won out on that deal.

Young was a last minute 2-star OL sign out of Tampa two years ago.  He was a project that did not work out and he transferred at the end of the 2012 season to South Florida.  He has a better chance of sticking on the roster there.

The only surprise transfer was Murphy, out of all that have transferred recently.  But academics and a desire to have a chance to start his final year were keys to his transfer.  Nice kid.  Gave the Gators all he had last year before getting injured in the Missouri game.  He played injured vs. Vandy and was horrible.  Missed the GSU and FSU games and Morningwhieg had to play....and he was even more horrible....and not even injured.  Thank goodness Grier and Harris committed this year to play QB.  Not sure why Morningwhieg did not transfer.  Rumor is....his transfer announcement is coming.

@ElemennoP

Not sure what six you are talking about.  Three have transferred since the end of the 2013 season.

Cody Riggs graduates in June and wants to go to graduate school at Notre Dame.  He also wants to play cornerback next year and Florida does not need him at corner with Hargreaves, Poole, Tabor, Washington, and Jackson at those spots.  Notre Dame needs a corner and the fit was right for Riggs to go there.  He played safety at Florida and is undersized for the position.  Florida is strong at the safety position with Maye, Harris, and Gorman.  GatorNation wishes Riggs well in his final year of eligibility at Notre Dame.

Kent Taylor was buried on the depth chart at TE and Florida did not have good tight ends last year.  Should tell you all you need to know what Taylor transferred to Kansas.  Florida will get Colin Thompson back from injury (hopefully) in 2014.  He has suffered from a foot problem since the day the 5-star TE recruit set foot on campus...no pun intended.  And Florida signed two TEs this recruiting cycle.  And Taylor reportedly was not a hard worker on the field and in during workouts.  Not willing to do what it took to get better on the field and was encouraged to transfer.

Tyler Murphy graduated from Florida in December and Florida did not have the graduate degree he wanted.  Therefore, he transferred to Boston College to pursue that graduate degree and also a chance to start at BC, which is not likely.  He would not have played at Florida with the arrival of Will Crier and Treon Harris and Driskel returning as the starter.  Muschamp was surprised by Murphy's decision to leave but understood the decision.

Not aware of any more transfers from Florida this year.

What are your thoughts about players leaving the UF program?  There was one of those picture articles on the AJC showing which players were leaving which college team and I believe it said UF was losing 6 players to transfers.  I don't know the impact but was wondering what the gator nation was thinking.  Much ado about nothing?

I don't believe that would get UGA on probation  However, somehow Mulligan U has found a way to be on probation over 52% of the time dating back to 1995.

Ha!  I did too, but as usual it devolves into something totally different.

Here's a few of the things I've learned from this blog about UGA recruiting:

* Mulligan U has won more NCs that UGA

* UGA beat GT in baseball last night, but a tech fan has cried foul

* Georgia Tech beat Syracuse in basketball (good, not an orange fan)

* Mark Richt has finally, according to some, earned his money after 13 years.

* College football coaches are scum.  Rich, but scum

* UF beat USCe in basketball last night

* Justin bieber has tattoos

* Mulligan U has been on probation roughly 52% of the time since 1995

* The most obnoxious fans of most college teams are usually individuals who didn't go to that respective college.

Who am I calling out?  read my post again.  The AJC had one of those picture articles talking about what players in the SEC were leaving their respective teams.  These kids were leaving of their own volition.  Under virtually every picture of a UF player it said a total of 6 were leaving the team.  I was asking a UF fan what, if any, impact it would have.

Nothing sinister, just a question.  But naturally, a Mulligan U "fan" lowered the bar and turned it into a "arrest and dismissal" comment.
