Georgia DB cleared to play for Auburn on “probationary status”

By Michael Carvell

Kalvaraz Bessent Auburn

After thinking about it for a month, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn has decided to let one of his top recruits, Camden County High School’s Kalvaraz Bessent, join the team this season after the 4-star cornerback was cleared of drug felony charges.

“Kalvaraz will be coming in,” Malzahn told reporters on Monday. “He will be a probationary status when he gets here, but he will be coming in with the other signees.”

Malzahn did not disclose any details of the probationary status.

Three days after signing with Auburn last month, Bessent was arrested at a traffic stop and charged with three others in the car with two counts of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to al.com, Bessent “was cleared of all charges after the 16-year-old passenger of the car claimed ownership of the vehicle and told police the marijuana and handgun found in the car belonged to the other two passengers: Elbert Thornton, 21, and Artez Ward, 19, of Jacksonville.”

After Bessent was cleared last month, Auburn’s coach declined to comment on the player’s status, saying he was in the process of gathering more information. Al.com columnist Kevin Scarbinsky wrote at the time “… there is still one major unanswered question, at least publicly, about his situation. Why was he one of four people in a car that contained bags of marijuana, a scale and a loaded handgun? Was it as simple as a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?”

Bessent was one of five Georgia high school football players picked to play in January’s Under Armour All-America game, and he is expected to be an immediate contributor for playing time at Auburn.

I can't find my checkbook and this was the last place I know that I had it with me.

UGA takes the lead for the Fulmer Cup .....again.....

Need a table for 4 and do you take checks?

Which probably means they didn't bother to drug test Soldier Boy to see if he was a "participant" or merely a by-stander.  Auburn makes UGA look good.  At least UGA will discipline its players, Malzahn puts his on double not so secret probation.  SMDH.

WTF?  Why do we keep giving these HOOD RATS second chances when my kid does everything right but because he is White, he can't even get a look at Div 1? Total BS!!!

As much time as Poad spends on these boards, I have to conclude that he is an unemployed loser..probably not a GT grad because he would have a job.

Haha but JHC is going some little school on his way to the NFL.

Well Auburn has been on probation more times than any school in SEC history, afterall.

Just passing along that probationary status to the new tiger cub! Welcome to Auburn.

The difference between winning and losing. This kid would have never stepped on campus at UGA.

It appears to me that some of you are confusing the number of players that have been dismissed and/or transferred at UGA with the number of players that have been arrested. UGA has had no where near the number of players arrested (40 to 50) that have been thrown out on this blog.

Hey @KeepOnSmilingWetWillie, don't post things like this after ALL the UGa fans in this thread have already told us that Mark Richt only lets high character kids into his program. He would never, ever let something like this happen:

"Four University of Georgia football players were arrested Monday night and charged with misdemeanor theft by deception.

According to University of Georgia Police, three of the players were depositing their regularly-scheduled stipend checks on their mobile phone banking apps, then taking them to a local convenience story for cashing immediately afterward, effectively cashing the checks twice. One other player, wide receiver Uriah LeMay, was retrieving a roommate’s already-cashed check and and cashing it at a convenience store."

@POAD2013

You're asking a question about 4 more dogs?

Hmmm, if you add 4 cokes to it I guess the answer would be what free food is given to persuade you to purchase 4 tickets to a Georgia tech football game

@HotDawg  AU hasn't been on probation in 20 years  but I guess that makes you feel better since UGA can't get to the big dance like AU has.

@HotDawg  More UGa players have been on Probation than any other College team. LOL are they even allowed to leave the state for the games?

Like ones at Tech? Wasn't there a major drug bust associated to Tech players fairly recently?

But they don't count in your argument, do they?

@POAD2013 @thebucketGood lord, you really are obsessed with all things UGA. Even with these four players getting caught acting stupid, UGA is down the line quite a bit, compared to quite a few of the other colleges this off season. Just check the police blotter for 2014 on MSNBC, the college football report, and you will see. Perhaps you could expand your list and keep a list of all colleges or just copy and paste their list. Your color was the perfect one for the 17th. Green with envy because GT is a secondary school in college athletics when compared to big brother, and it eats at you every day, I would say.
