Longtime Alabama football commit looks around

By Michael Carvell

Mehki Brown committed to Alabama as a sophomore but that hasn’t stopped him from looking around.

The 4-star defensive end from Carver-Columbus High School has made unofficial visits to Florida and Clemson, among others.

He has got serious interest in UGA, even though he hasn’t been on the Bulldogs’ campus since he was in the fifth grade (hard to believe with Isaiah Crowell and all the other Carver players recruited by UGA?). He also wants a closer look at FSU, even though he hasn’t been there since the seventh grade.

  • What would it take for another college to be able to steal Brown from Alabama?
  • And how does Brown reflect on his decision to commit to Alabama so early?

He talks about that and more in the above video.

This young man, like so many college bound jocks, is looking for utopia. These kids will make their ultimate decision based on what feels good as they have no experience or knowledge to assist them.

I believe these kids are getting the most out of their recruitment, and why not? We all would, if we could.

I've thought for a long time that high school students shouldn't commit to a college team until their senior year.

In many instances, the athletes are pushed into curriculums based on the idea that they're going to college athletes, so they'r e not prepared for college classrooms and don't have the test scores required (though, obviously, many colleges find ways to avoid that problem).

Also, how does a sophomore know what his major will be? He hasn't been through the majority of his high school course work, so it's misleading. And, what if the coach he's committed to is fired, leaves for another job or is dismissed like Butch Davis or Joe Paterno?

It's ridiculous that anyone is offered before their senior year. And it's ridiculous that parents allow their children to make that decision.

He has his mind made up why give him media coverage, a total waste of time and effort

Players should take their trips BEFORE Committing.

Recruits are sometimes funny by what they say and then do not say.  Brown recently visited Florida and just raved about his visit and how the Gators were a threat to Bama.  Now, one week later, no mention of the Gators.  But that is probably because two 5 star DEs from the state of Florida are most likely headed to Gainesville in this year's class.  Sounds like Stanford has a really good shot as well.

Son, come to Athens. You'll love it here. Glorious beautiful Saturdays between the hedges don't get any better! Play under the best defensive coordinator in college football.

Bama will win with Brown or without him. Enjoy the process and look around. That is what Nick told him from day one.

Hopefully he'll be more like jarvis jones than isaiah crowell. Carver-columbus hasn't had the best reputation throughout the years. And not just at UGA.

@TampGator1  Stanford academics IS top of the charts? Does he have the academic background to get in Stanford? He better Kill it on his grades and the SAT.

@MichaelCarvell maybe somebody just needs to be in charge of the NCAA with some common sense.

Legitimate offers should be allowed until the summer before their senior season and no player can commit without a qualifying ACT or SAT score.

@POAD2013 @MichaelCarvell that would be good, in some instances, but not so much, in others. Fact is, these guys are auditioning for, what they hope will be, their career. Some leeway would have to be given for those whose "academics" would not qualify them for  "normal" college curriculum. But does that mean that they should be denied the opportunity to work at their particular skill? I think not...

@POAD2013 @DawgGoneIt  UGA's D will be MUCH IMPROVED with Pruitt at the helm. But you can even ask Florida State players how much he affected them and made them a better defense. Read interviews with them. Yes Florida State had a talented defense, but you don't think Pruitt steered all that? The year before he got there they only had 12 interceptions in 2012. In 2013, under Pruitt, they had 26. He puts emphasis on turnovers. That's his thing. That, and putting tons of pressure on the QB. For you to act like he didn't make an impact at all on Florida State's D shows your inept ability to accept reality. But you're a Tech fan, living in your own world filled with delusion.

@DawgGoneIt nice Dodge and Deflect. That all UGa has these days is beating Tech. WOW

@POAD2013 @DawgGoneIt  Just think, with that horrible UGA D, you gave up a 20 point lead at home bubba. Sucks to suck don't it? How does it feel to be owned by your in state rival? I wouldn't know the feeling!

@DawgGoneIt I don't give a damn if he does or doesn't it still will not make him the BEST DC in college football. You saying he is the BEST DC after 1 years just doesn't hold water. The guy hasn't really had to do much of a job yet. Can he make the UGa D any worse? I doubt it. He will actually show if he is even a DC if he can get UGa D to be better in a few years.

@DawgGoneIt WOW that is Impressive. He Did NOTHING but not screw up what was given to him. He has said as much in interviews. He was GIVEN a Great D that he didn't have to Fix anything.
