Chuma Edoga: 5-star commits to USC over UGA, Tennessee and Stanford

By Michael Carvell

One of the nation’s top prospects on the offensive line is headed to California for his college football.

5-star Chuma Edoga committed to USC over UGA, Tennessee and Stanford via Twitter on Monday night.

Edoga made an unofficial visit to USC over his spring break, and briefly said the Trojans were his leader before saying all schools were equal before Monday’s announcement.

It was a gigantic recruiting victory for USC in the state of Georgia. The Trojans were helped out by some family connections.

“I know he does have some connections to family in LA,” McEachern coach Kyle Hockman told the AJC. “His father passed away last January, and his father’s sister lives out in the area. So I think that has something to do with it, at least with the original connection. I don’t know the particulars. He felt good about several different places, and his mom has been involved. She has given her blessing to USC.”

The 6-foot-4, 280-pound Edoga is one of the four consensus 5-star prospects for Georgia’s 2015 class, per the 247sports composite rankings.

“He’s best offensive lineman that I’ve coached at his age,” Hockman said. “We have several playing at BCS schools now.

“Chuma is a big athlete, there’s no question about that. For his size, he’s very, very nimble. He looks like a big ballerina sometimes. He can run, and he’s physical, too. He’s a bright young man with a 1,200 SAT and a great GPA. He’s an all-around guy and will be a great asset at USC.”

Edoga told the AJC that despite his commitment, he still plans to take all five official visits next fall but that it will be “hard” for any school to change his mind.

We can not get the elite offensive linemen. Lost out on Laremy Tunsil in the 2013 recruiting cycle. Hyatt going to Clemson and Ivey probably going to Florida. Took back the scholly offer for David Sharpe this past cycle. Will Friend needs to earn his money for UGA.

I imagine $chool$ would prefer recent commit$ not not use the $ in their tweets...

I sure hope that 1200 SAT they're talking about is out of 1800 and not 2400; otherwise he's about as "bright" as a glow-in-the-dark frisbee.

Due to reduction in scholarships, the trojan's are thin at all positions, especially O line. Chuma should have an opportunity to play early in Sarkisian's hurry up offense.

i guess he felt that he didn't want to go thru the "black man's rite of passage" of committing a crime and go to jail in order to fit in at the univ of Georgia.  I am sure the head coach is headed down to the local prison (maybe in hancock county) to find his next recruit...

Not plying football in the SEC is the equivalent of Not Playing Football, period. The college football sun rises and sets with the SEC. Son, you are now irrelevant to college football.

If you want to win bowl games and play in a NC, the writing is on the wall, get out of Georgia.

Stanford was the best school of those choices. USC was second best. Good for him get out of redneck land and get a degree worth something outside of the South.

Get a taller QB so that he can see over the Defense so that his passes will not get tippe,  lose the game and so you will not be saying you are 5 yards away from the BCS CHAMPIONSHIP.

The family connections make all the difference.  Especially a sister in the area.  I hope he has a great career either as a football player or an aeronautical engineer.

@ musclecar, Bama has a good recruiting class with most all 5 star guys, it's how you use them after they get there, do you think they are learning how to tackle on field goal attemps ?

@mrcvsj  The position coaches aren't  solely responsible  for recruitng  their  position, the assignment are  divided by the coahes into regions. Since  Georgia  signed the #7  nationally Ol class in 2014.Of the top five offensive tackles in the country the last three years (15 players) only five of them (33%) have gone on to sign with a school in their home state.  Offensive production isn't a problem .

@TheOnlySteveThatMatters  So this is Chuma's sister and I'm pretty sure that the 1200 SAT they're discussing is out of 1600. So I suggest that you refrain from talking about my brother like that because he is an extremely intelligent and levelheaded young man. That's my kind way of putting it, Steve who probably doesn't matter all that much.

@notevensurprised How pathetic of a human being are you to hide behind a computer and insult a whole race of men? Typical of some lowly educated Nazi reject to focus on negatives, instead of seeing the Michael Eric Dyson's, Cornel West, or Dennis Kimbro's of the world. There Black and successful, but you only see the criminals when you began to stereotype.

@notevensurprised    Of course, UGA is one of the few SEC schools to kick guys off the team for law violations.  It's the other schools who pick up their leftovers (Mettenberger, Marshall, etc) .  But nice try.

@RandyHall  I know how passionate you are about UGA's recruiting at OL and WR. It might be a tough week. Kim is next on Thursday

It's amazing how us southerners have managed to survive and even thrive with our little ole degree from UGA, one of the top 20 state public universities in the nation excelling beyond so many universities north of the mason-dixon line. Your ignorance on this subject is showing. If you are referring to a redneck as a plow boy that runs a tractor to feed your family, I'd much rather have them in my state than the hoodlums that are looking to sucker punch someone. Maybe, a new venue for you outside the south would be good for you and the rest of us that read your garbage.

@UGA76 Moron.  UGA had no chance with this kid because he wanted to major in a degree program not offered at UGA.  Mark Richt can't do anything about that.

The big question is why wasn't GATech in the mix?  GATech's does off the program Edoga was interested in pursuing, and is one of the best schools for that program in the nation (actually considered a better program than USC's).  Why didn't Edoga ever consider GATech?

Is that all you have? One fluke play? I think Nick Saban has shown he actually knows how to use and produce with five star talent. After all, we have won a number of championships 1980, Georgia hasn't. Georgia Tech has even won a Championship since. Love the droolers that are clearly jealous. The Vanderbilt loss must still sting a little.

Emma, I'm impressed with your response and defense of your brother. Personally, I love it when young men and women have the opportunity to choose their dream school. It looks like he has a great future ahead of him in whatever field of work he pursues. God bless.

@EmmaEdoga it doesn't seem like Steve took the SAT because he didn't even know 1600 is the scale.

I hope they let your brother study Aerospace if he wants to but it is an extremely difficult and time consuming course of study. Most coaches will try to talk him out of it in favor of something much easier. Good Luck to him.
