The state’s No. 1 prospect at wide receiver from 2012 is looking for a new school.

Former Sandy Creek High School standout JaQuay Williams is transferring from Texas A&M after one season, his uncle told the AJC.

“Yes, he is transferring,” Kevin Ofchus said. “It was the distance, and standard things that college kids go through. Things just didn’t work out, and that happens sometimes. It’s no big deal. There’s no issues or anything like that.

“He left Texas A&M on good terms and he’s looking forward to moving ahead. He’s just looking for a place to fit in.”

It’s too early for Williams to speculate on future destinations because his release paperwork is still being processed by Texas A&M. Ofchus is hopeful for an unconditional release that will allow Williams to play anywhere for three seasons (he still has a red-shirt season left to burn).

“I’m sure some of the schools that liked him before will like him again, but we’ll have to see how things play out,” Ofchus said.

Williams may look at schools such as Auburn, UGA and South Carolina, but he is unlikely to transfer to another SEC school because he may have to sit out two seasons, per SEC transfer rules. However, he could attend a junior college like former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara and be able to enroll at another SEC school after one season.

“I think everything is open at this point. I’m sure getting closer to home is part of his intent. I would just say all options are open right now.”

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Williams appeared in 10 games this past season for Texas A&M, catching four passes for 71 yards and one touchdown.

Williams has been all over the map over the last three years: He transferred from Heard County High School to Sandy Creek after his junior year, and later signed with Auburn but did not qualify. Williams spent the fall of 2012 at Virginia’s Fork Union prep school and enrolled at Texas A&M last January.
