Former UGA target is transferring from Texas A&M (UPDATED)

By Michael Carvell

The state’s No. 1 prospect at wide receiver from 2012 is looking for a new school.

Former Sandy Creek High School standout JaQuay Williams is transferring from Texas A&M after one season, his uncle told the AJC.

“Yes, he is transferring,” Kevin Ofchus said. “It was the distance, and standard things that college kids go through. Things just didn’t work out, and that happens sometimes. It’s no big deal. There’s no issues or anything like that.

“He left Texas A&M on good terms and he’s looking forward to moving ahead. He’s just looking for a place to fit in.”

It’s too early for Williams to speculate on future destinations because his release paperwork is still being processed by Texas A&M. Ofchus is hopeful for an unconditional release that will allow Williams to play anywhere for three seasons (he still has a red-shirt season left to burn).

“I’m sure some of the schools that liked him before will like him again, but we’ll have to see how things play out,” Ofchus said.

Williams may look at schools such as Auburn, UGA and South Carolina, but he is unlikely to transfer to another SEC school because he may have to sit out two seasons, per SEC transfer rules. However, he could attend a junior college like former Alabama running back Alvin Kamara and be able to enroll at another SEC school after one season.

“I think everything is open at this point. I’m sure getting closer to home is part of his intent. I would just say all options are open right now.”

The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Williams appeared in 10 games this past season for Texas A&M, catching four passes for 71 yards and one touchdown.

Williams has been all over the map over the last three years: He transferred from Heard County High School to Sandy Creek after his junior year, and later signed with Auburn but did not qualify. Williams spent the fall of 2012 at Virginia’s Fork Union prep school and enrolled at Texas A&M last January.

I know it is a big step down but I am sure the University of West Georgia would welcome him with open arms!! He would go good with our new coach that promises to take UWG to places it hasnt been ever.

Raise your hand if you didn't see this coming back when he signed with them? He made an emotional decision to sign with a team he didn't consider when he first got out of High School. He should have stuck to the schools he knew best: Auburn and Georgia.

A tremendous talent but Georgia has been the bridesmaid twice with this guy..Let's not do it a third time.Best of luck.

Did not qualify at AUBURN? Surely you jest!! Everybody qualifies at Auburn--No matter your past transgressions or academic standing.

Possibly 7 schools in less than 5 years.......sounds like this kid needs to grow-up.

Stuff like this is why I do not envy athletes one bit and do not let my kids, even though they have athletic ability, get too invested into sports.

What is going on with the Sandy Creek players transferring? First Shaq Wiggins and now JaQuay Williams. I wonder are they a package deal to another school?

@SLR  didn't Qualify at ANY SEC school? I didn't know it was possible to NOT Qualify of an SEC school as an athlete.

Or, maybe, he just needs to find a school where the academic requirements are not so tough for football players.   Louisville comes to mind immediately.  Or FSU, where you get a free ride for both academics and certain sea foods (and shoes even)..

@Buzz-Off  Sounds like fans like you and me need to not take sports so seriously and create situations where it pays more to run fast and be dumb than it is to sit your azz down and work your butt off for everything you get.

I wonder if Sandy Creek needs to upgrade their academic program for football players?

Give it a break.  How many of Tech's football players would have gained admittance to Tech if they were not football players?  Probably not that many.
