UGA and Georgia Tech are favorites for Maryland transfer, per report

By Michael Carvell

Georgia Tech and UGA are possible destinations for Maryland transfer Charles Mitchell, the former basketball star from Wheeler High School.

The 6-foot-7 forward is the fifth player to transfer from Maryland since the end of the season.

Mitchell has a top five of Georgia Tech, UGA, Auburn, Alabama and the College of Charleston, according to InsideMDSports.com’s Jeff Ermann.

The website, citing an unnamed source, also said Mitchell hasn’t set up any visits yet, but is most seriously considering Georgia Tech, UGA and Auburn.

Both Georgia Tech and UGA have at least one more spot available to add a player to its recruiting class for this season.

Mitchell, who averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds this past season, has two years left to play and could avoid sitting out next season due to an NCAA hardship waiver.

“The reason I decided to leave Maryland is to be near my grandmother who has been ill over the past year,” Mitchell said in a Maryland press release. “Knowing that she raised me and is still a very big part of my life, I decided to move closer to home. It’s important for me to be there for my grandmother and to help support my family.

“I didn’t want to leave, but I have to put my family first. I really enjoyed playing with my teammates and I’ve had a lot of great memories over the last two seasons. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had and wish Maryland nothing but success in the future.”

Mitchell would be a huge addition @ UGA or GT. All of the schools he is considering is a lot closer to his grandmother than Maryland so I hope he chooses the school that is best for him. Best wishes to grandma as well. We all have ailing parents and/or grandparents so that is a human condition common to all.

We could use the kid at GT. I feel sure he would want an ACC calibre team..

GT would be a superb team AND college for Charles Mitchell.........opportunity to start immediately, play in the ACC with a fairly solid group of talented players who are about to benefit from early playing time as freshmen, get serious attention from the NBA, for a solid high character coach (he is not even close to the hot seat people; get real), get a great well respected college degree AND he will be playing as close as possible to his Grandmother and other family members!!!!!!!

It all makes sense to me.

Best wishes for you and your family, regardless of which school you choose.

UGA may not get their biggest need, which is a true center with mitchell....but his size combined with thornton and djurisic would likely deter many big men from wanting to bang-it down low in the paint against UGA.

such an addition would also give plenty of opportunity for maten to learn.....as opposed to getting thrown into the mix before he was ready

good luck to the young man!

Fine young man. Good luck where ever you sign. Go Dawgs

Carter already  sounds like an NBA player wanting to pick his team and who he plays with. GT has sent plenty of players to the NBA. Mitchell is doing right by his family. Hope he picks Tech.

College basketball transfers are out of control

He may want to consider uga over tech. Tech may have a new coach after next season. Uga's team seems to be on the rise.

GTBob

@JFKDawg Tech would allow any player to transfer to Maryland. In fact, Robert Carter may transfer there.

Uh pretty simple. Our players aren't allowed to go to schools we play every year. Maryland is moving to the B1G so we won't play them every year. For an analogy and I'm not sure how the fast food business works but employees typically sign non-compete agreements with their company.

grh0317
grh0317

@Brahma Are you daft? UGA hasn't had a round ball team since

old Tubby Smith.. They are SEC bottom feeders every year and can't

compete with Tech or ACCA play..

@Brahma  yes it  does. we have beat you 3 times in a row now.  keep up the good work.

@Brahma

Chances are much greater that UGA will have a new coach next season.

He will have a shot as a starter at GT.  UGA is pretty solid at his position

Strange list of favorites. When did Alabama, Auburn and College of Charleston move and are now "near" his home in Cobb County?

GTBob
GTBob

@Brahma UGA is on the rise? Wow, that is one way to look at things I guess.

P_The_Ricker
P_The_Ricker

@Caius @Brahma

they're "near" to Cobb County in comparison to college park.

- GT is returning only 1/5 top scorers from last year

- Gregory has never finished a season with a greater record than 16-15 at tech

- GT just had their best player leave the team due to dissatisfaction with the program

- UGA just went 20-14....after a 6-6 start

- UGA just finished 3rd in the SEC.....after being projected no greater than 11th

Tell me again how UGA's coach is more likely to get canned?

@Caius @Brahma

Actually a Center is exactly where UGA is thin and needs a starter.

We had 2 stiffs who were  not SEC caliber who transferred and former starter, 6'9'' Donte Williams, just graduated.

So you have no clue what you talking about when saying UGA is fine at the C position. As of now we would be starting the 6'7'' / 230 b  Marcus Thorton at C. Sure he is a former Mr. Basketball when in HS in Ga. However, Mitchell would easily start over him at C and push Thorton to PF.

@GTBob

UGA finished tied for 2nd in the SEC with Kentucky........the same Kentucky that went all the way to the NCAA Championship Game. UGA is also returning 7 of their top 8 players. So yes, I believe they fit the definition of a team on the rise.

Coach Fox just signed an extension. I believe he is under contract at UGA for 4 more years. Its GT's coach who is on the hot seat ( in both football and basketball). Tech's football coach just ran off his best player just like GT's basketball coach ran off his best player.

Auburn is a longer drive to Atlanta..........while Athens is close.........but not too close for family to drop in unexpected.

Logic says he will be a Dawg.

@P_The_Ricker

UK is the only school in the SEC where the fans care more about b'ball than football

GTBob

@P_The_Ricker You are right. He isn't getting canned. It would take a near miracle to play bad enough in the SEC to get canned.

is a joke. Bring in Jim Harrick// lol

@FlatTire @GTBob Love the way a Tech Alum hits the like on all the Leghumpers post. Mikey is a troll boy.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  yea you're probably right I mean the attendance at braves games in the 80's were much higher than they were in the 90's

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire I have actual evidence to back it up. What do you have?

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire Winning doesn't have that much of an impact on support for GT. It sounds weird but its true. There is no history of attendance spikes or budget spikes in years when the football team was successful. There also is no spike in recruiting. The year after we won the NC, we couldn't bring in a top 25 recruiting class. It just doesn't work that way at GT. It is extremely difficult to pickup any sidewalk fans here.

As for the majors. Those sound like they would be advanced classes for UGA students so we will let you have those. Besides. Every time we want to add to our curriculum the UGA dominated board of regents shoots it down anyways.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  Im pretty sure those who donate would give to the athletic dept.  Start winning and you get a return on your investment.

If you win; you will gain plenty of non alumni to support your team.  I remember quite well when Tech won in 1990 all the non alumni coming out of nowhere wearing Tech stuff.

UGA has plenty of guys flunk out all the time.  Just add some more curriculum like Graffiti Cleaning Engineer or Neighborhood watchmen Engineer (that actually would help the North Ave neighborhood)

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire GT isn't going to take money from the endowment for athletics. Not only would that be ethically corrupt but it would be illegal. As for the low GPA players. We had two key 4 star guys who were academic exceptions recently flunk out after the spring semester. Explain how we are going to keep taking guys like that and stay eligible per the NCAA APR rules. As for the alumni base, having a substantial alumni base in the state of Georgia would absolutely be needed to compete.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob   yea you can allow some more low GPA players in.  you do it already.  You dont have to triple the alumni base.  With the endowment Tech has 40 million would be a return on the investment.

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire Oh really? Like what? Drop academic restrictions? Add 40 million to the athletic budget? Increase the number of students at the school? Triple the alumni base overnight? GT will never come close to competing for a national championship again. College football has changed far too much. The closer it gets to a semi professional sport, the further GT will drop, regardless of what the administration wants. We just aren't that kind of school.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  never; give me a break bob;  if the Tech administration wants a championship then they will put the resources in place to allow it to happen

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire When do I ever talk about 1990? I am well aware that was a miracle that happened nearly 25 years ago, and is very unlikely to ever happen again.

GTBob
GTBob

@P_The_Ricker They got within 4 points because La Tech kept missing free throws. Even with all of the missed free throws UGA never came close to taking the lead. La Tech was up by 13 with 2 minutes left in the game. Does that make you feel better than the halftime deficit?

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  yea I just get a laugh at how you and the rest of the Tech faithful are quick to talk about 1990 then in the same breath claim Tech cant compete and that there are only 20 teams that can

P_The_Ricker
P_The_Ricker

@GTBob @P_The_Ricker and UGA got to within 4 points of La Tech with a minute left in the game.  funny how you reference halftime of one game....but the last 4 min of another.

......you are the ultimate "spin-doctor!"

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire You jumped into a conversation about UGA being on the rise and you took the side of the people who argue they are. Forgive my confusion. I will remember in the future that really, you have nothing to say about the topic you just want to throw some random comments out.

GTBob
GTBob

@P_The_Ricker They were down by 5 points against Vermont with 4 minutes to play and Vermont completely imploded. Against Louisiana Tech they were down by 19 at halftime and LT let them creep back a little but still won comfortably. Two similar scores but two very different games.

P_The_Ricker
P_The_Ricker

@GTBob @Nate-the-Great as said above...."master of turning everything around and making it suit your belief"

UGA beat Vermont by 7---per bob....needing a miracle to win

UGA lost to La Tech by 8---per bob....beaten easily

please explain the above logic

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  where did I say UGA is on the rise?  I just laugh at that continued excuses you give like the UGA kool-aid club does for the continued mediocrity every year

GTBob
GTBob

@Nate-the-Great I don't consider that a team on the rise. A team that improved a little? Yes. A team on the rise? No. Rise would imply that you are actually accomplishing something which Mark Fox has yet to do. Needing a miracle to beat Vermont and then getting beaten easily by Louisiana Tech in a tournament doesn't make you a team on the doorstep of greatness no matter how much you want to pretend it does.

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire And you are the master at jumping into a conversation and trying to completely derail it and take it in a new direction because you are apparently getting your feelings hurt. If you feel that I am wrong and that UGA is a team on the rise give your argument. Personally, I doubt you can name a player on UGAs basketball team.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob  golf clap Bob; you are the master of turning everything around and making it suit your belief

Nate-the-Great
Nate-the-Great

@GTBob:  I think you need to compare last year to the year before.  Last year's team was drastically better, therefore a team on the rise.

How was Tech's postseason performance?  What tourney did they get invited to again?

GTBob
GTBob

@FlatTire The weird thing is, our football team is actually much better than our basketball team.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@GTBob wow bob why cant your football team initiate such big talk

GTBob
GTBob

@BulldawgRuss Yeah, and you played Kentucky twice last year. They slaughtered you each time. You aren't equal to them. You guys didn't beat a single team that made the NCAA tournament last year. In fact you only got withing 10 points against one of them. That terrible GT team whose coach is on the hot seat beat you easily in your own arena. You had a pretty lackluster showing in the NIT tournament. That is not the resume of a team on the rise.
