UGA loses football signee due to academics

By Michael Carvell

Mark Richt confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that one member of UGA’s 2014 recruiting class did not qualify academically.

“There’s a young man who is not going to make it,” Richt said.

The UGA signee is wide receiver Gilbert Johnson of Homestead, Fla., according to several media outlets. He will likely end up at a junior college.

Richt didn’t name Johnson on Tuesday but he was asked if it was a wide receiver. Richt nodded his head to say yes. “It’s probably who you think it is.”

That’s the bad news; the good news for UGA is that the rest of the 21-member class has reported to campus, with the exception of former Grayson High School defensive back Shattle Fenteng, who is finishing up classes at Hutchinson junior college.

“Everybody who was supposed to make it, made it,” Richt said. “I don’t think anything will change on that front other than Shattle will (report) in July.”

Must have been presented with one of those difficult (uh, hard, for you uga folks), math test questions, such as what is numerical difference in points credited for football FG minus points credited for a basketball FG.

I wish we could qualify players like bama. When was their last qualifying casualty?

Remember Darius Page transferring from Pensacola to Foley high school and telling his coach that bama said if he went there he could get qualified?

Remember the nosetackle from Hoover that had a grade scandal back in 08 or 09? One of Hoovers coaches from that scandal is now coach at Foley. Oh....Foley High School produce many other bama scholars like DJ Fluker.

Put it this way....@Contractor1 and other people NON-UGA must think something of UGA or they wouldn't be here. So whenever we get trolls, take it in stride. It's when they stop coming to your board that you worry about the state of your program.

Did Contractor (the guy who got served last night) say that Derrck Henry's (aka Skullet Man) parents were professors?

BWAAHAHAHA. That is awesome.

Meant to post......."SEC All Sports Championship."  I think Stanford won the national title....but not sure.

The DB depth chart is getting shorter and shorter. Are any of the check cashing guys defensive players? Dawgs might have to look into free agency to fill the holes.

@gtcaryd  Who are you? Dawg fan or foe? I usually only pay attention to posters who respond to my post. I guess you are one of them now.

Coaches take a chance on a good player if it's going to be close. Several schools will miss on players in the coming weeks/months

@AlternativeDawg If you had read the rest of the story on Page,  you  would have read that Foley HS had the block scheduling of classes that would have enabled him to take enough classes to "get qualified".

Alabama has their qualifying issues at times.  Saban's approach is to not waste time on borderline recruits if they have questionalbe scores.  IF the recruit is good enough to take a chance on not making the grades, Saban will will take a chance.

Alabama would have taken RB Jovan Robinson from Memphis untill they saw his grades.  At some point after that, his grades got changed and he was "eligible" for Auburn.

Regarding the grade change - Josh Chapman had a semester grade of 89 andanother semster frade of  90 which is 89.5.  Most people would round up to 90 as I was taught in math class.  However, either the computer or teacher rounded down and then the school counslers then rounded it up as they were reviewing it.

@DawgGoneIt @Contractor1  Contractor was merely using his Bernie Madoff School of Accounting education to learn me on the difference between playing the knock out game and just being the getaway driver....twice.

Apparently as long as you don't hit and rob people but just abet them you character remains in tact.

I was raised a Georgia fan before I actually went to Alabama.  I know more about your team than 90% of your own fans.  I know more about most Georgia sports than 99.9% of your own fans.  I still hope Georgia does well for my dad's sanity, but I am not scared to call someone out for an all out lie and nonsense BS.

@BoomTown At least they didn't choose them first. UGA seems to be very good at it.

Not as tough a crowd as your Bama girls faced last night in the softball national championship game.......

FLORIDA GATORS.......NCAA National Champs.......2014. The beginning of yet another national sports title for the Gators.....hopefully.

That's right...Chapman was his name. Ok...thanks. He was a B+ student and the scandal was over whether or not he was an A student. Got it.

Also, Foley is better at class schedules so that is why players transfer there. I am sure borderline students thrive at taking heavy course loads in order to make it with no help from Foley "insiders".

Seriously when was the last bama grade casualty. Have you seen Hard Knocks with Andre Smith. Its not like bama is bringing in Rhodes scholars.

Isn;t bama recruiting Jovon Robinson now? Doesn't he have a commitable offer?

Contractor1
Contractor1

No, I used to refute your lies about the fact he actually beat up a kid. He was the driver, but never made contact. He was wrong and was punished for it. Unlike Ogletree who was a theif. Who steals from their own teammates? Nick Marshall did the same thing at Georgia. Mettenburger sexually assaulted a girl while at Georgia. Yeah, steady program you have there.

Goota give credit where credit is due.  Y'alls girls were on when they needed to be.  Y'all drilled our pitching and we couldn't hit the ball, and when we did we left runners stranded like crazy.  Just gotta tip your hat to the better team sometimes.

AlternativeDawg
AlternativeDawg

Speaking of heavy course loads...I heard a story that a JUCO lineman for Bama is taking like 25 hours to make it into school this fall. Unreal.

I just envision this montage playing as this genius is burning through his studies, late nights in the library or one on one tutoring to achieve the ultimate goal of playing professional football...at Tuscaloosa.

AlternativeDawg
AlternativeDawg

@Contractor1  Dude if you think Pettway being the getaway driver makes him any better then maybe you need to call Alabama and get a refund.

Also, if you think he is better then Nick marshall or Ogletree then you need to call me and buy some high end crime free property in Tuscaloosa.

A Georgia fan talking about being a sidewalk fan?!?  Bwahahahahahaha!!!  98% of your fanbase are football fans only and sidwalk fans to boot.  This is the most comical post of the day.

@AlternativeDawg

i will never say these kids do not get some insider help.  It has happened before and will happen again.

Foley has block scheduling which enabled Paige to take a few more classes than Washington County HS offered.  That is how he would get eliglbe - if he passed them :)

RB Bo Scarbourgh is the questionable signee with grade issues right now.  he is a 5-star and a local kid so i think that is why Alabama is taking a chance on him.  Alabama has such a talent pool to choose from, they do not have to wait on kids with grade issues.  they can move on to the next kid that has his grades in order.

yes, Alabama is recruiting Jovan and i think he has a commitable offer. He wants to be a 1-and-done  from my understanding.

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie  Call us when you win something without having send a ring to the NCAA president for looking the other way.

Have you ever read Walter Byers book? You should its good.

Contractor1

I never said that you idiot. I simply said he didn't punch the kid as you claimed. All of this started after you said Ogletree did no wrong and didn't knock out the kid he stole from. Both were wrong, as was Nick Marshall. There's no who was worse here, because they were all wrong and broke the law. As soon you understand that maybe you'll get off your idiotic rant about, well, nothing, just blabbering.

@Contractor1  Yes but most of our sidewalk fans can read and write.

DERP!

AlternativeDawg
AlternativeDawg

@Time4Bama @AlternativeDawg  Foley must be the best (get me into bama) HS out there cause Page is not the only one. Many bama players transferred there to "get right". Its just a crazy coincidence that the coach there was at Hoover during their scandal.

Bo will play at bama. He has moved around too much not to. I am still waiting on someone to give me a name of a guy that didn;t qualify. If there is a name he must be a human turnip or a 3 star who they could take or leave.

Alabama does not have to wait on kids with grade issues because if they want you and you are iffy they can make it go away. Its not like bama is not recruiting iffy kids its just the iffy kids that all qualify...some how.

AlternativeDawg
AlternativeDawg

@Contractor1  You mad? You need a second?

Where did I even bring up ogletree or say he did no wrong. I just said he and others who have stolen did so without assault and battery being involved.

Yes....assault and battery (or being a part of it) is worse then stealing from a locker.

Guys who have not qualified that I can remember - Brandon Lewis went to JUCO in 2008; DL Quinton Dial went to JUCO in 2009; Deion Belue went to JUCO in 2010; WR Duron Carter had his issues in 2011; OL Brandon Hill went to prep school in 2012.

@AlternativeDawg @Time4Bama

I do not know about Foley HS, its academic reputation, or its coaches. It is on the other end of the state from me.I do know block scheduling is important for kids getting more classes and being able to graduate in December with enough credits and Foley has that.

Remember  these top talented kids are recruited by a lot of schools other than Alabama. Other schools have interest in these kids being eligible. Whether you like it or not and since I follow Alabama football in more detail than you, Alabama does havea  bigger pool of kids to choose from ifcertain ones have grade issues. Alabama is picky about who they can recruit.

You said it last night. Actually, depending on the amount, theft is a felony.

People like you don't get me mad, because you can't help it. You're not capable of having an educated conversation and shooting barbs back and forth in respectable way, so why would I allow something like you get me mad. There are a few good folks on here, but unfortunately more like you that spoil it and give the good Georgia fans bad names.
