Florida WR commits to Georgia Tech

By Michael Carvell

It was a big recruiting weekend for Georgia Tech.

WR Christian Philpott

WR Christian Philpott

The Yellow Jackets picked up their third commitment in two days when wide receiver Christian Philpott of Tallahassee, Fla., pledged to the ACC school on Sunday night.

“Georgia Tech is close to home,” Philpott told the AJC. “It felt like a family atmosphere. The offense is perfect for what I want to do … Their offense really sets you up as a wide receiver to get open for big plays.

“And then, of course, there’s the Georgia Tech education. I want to start my own business, and a degree from there would help that.”

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Philpott is rated as a 3-star and the No. 90 overall prospect out of Florida. He said he committed to Georgia Tech over Penn State, Louisville, Wake Forest, and UCF, among 20 offers.

“It wasn’t whether I picked Georgia Tech over anybody,” Philpott said. “I was really waiting on schools but then my perfect school, Georgia Tech, came calling. And it was perfect for me so I took it.”

Philpott is Georgia Tech’s first commit at wide receiver. The Yellow Jackets could sign as many as three at that position in this year’s class, according to JacketsOnline.com’s Kelly Quinlan.

“It just felt like the right time (to commit),” Philpott said. “Georgia Tech was the school for me, so I had to do it.”

Georgia Tech’s other two commits from the weekend are Christian Campbell, a 3-star athlete from Ponchatoula, La., who will play quarterback in college, and Trent Sellers, a defensive end from Sandy Creek High School.

Georgia Tech has seven commitments for 2015.

I guess he needs work on his blocking skill set.

Congrats to Tech on a nice pickup. This will help offset some of this spring's bad news regarding personnel and players. CPJ will be under a whole lot of scrutiny this season. Unfortunately, he doesn't often handle that kind of scrutiny and attention (especially from the news media) very well. Wish I had a better feeling about this coach and his program (I was a big supporter for the first three or four years), but I no longer am. These three-star players are fine and do serve a purpose, but if you are going to win the big games on our schedule (Clemson, FSU, Va. Tech, UGA) you are going to need to add at least a few playmakers to compliment the three-stars. That's been the most notable trend in Ga. Tech football over the last six years – the gradual decline in playmakers on the roster. Once Orwin Smith was gone, there were none left on offense (Godhigh was close, but not quite a full-scale playmaker because of his size), and only Attaochu on defense. What will Tech have this year? Any?

We seem to get plenty of 3 star players.  At least we have kids that want to go to school and earn an education.  Better than some schools.

How many passes does GA Tech average per game?

Here is a much more important question - are we going to get three or four 320 pound defensive tackle commits this year?  This is what we need more than anything else, by far.

and of course all the other schools that have offered Christina are wrong in their evaluation of his talent and abilities as well, right?

Why would top receivers go to gt ?? They run the triple option, don't throw the ball much and their qbs can't pass -- what gives.

@drydirtroad how many LOS snaps do NFL QBs get these days? If Christian wanst to play in the NFL he will have to catch passes from drop back passers.

@OldJacketFan

Yep - especially Penn State and Louisville.  What the heck does Petrino know about offense?

He got an inside tip from someone affiliated with the AD. We're not going to be running the triple O starting next season.

@bigmacondawg He just needs to stay away from UGA unless he wants to end up in Louisville.

@AugustaJacket Great speed. Hopefully it will translate well to the football field.

@Birmingham__Jacket You know, the more you try to convince yourself that this is true and will actually happen, the more it's going to hurt when it almost certainly doesn't.

@BCB @POAD2014 Isn't that true of all WRs?  I've never seen an offense one WR possesses the ball more than the rest of the offensive skill positions combined.   And if they're not catching, they're supposed to be blocking

@gtcaryd

I see that the post of mine to which you replied has been spammed - along with several others.  Looks like the children are out on break.

@RuePaulJohnson Personally id rather have Jadaveon Clowney types at DE and Sammy Watkins types at WR. Nah, I don't think im asking for too much.

@RuePaulJohnson @JacketMan You are 100 percent correct!  Bigger and Faster.  More potential talent would be nice to go along with the bigger and faster..

@bigmacondawg

The last time UGA won the SEC football championship, Philpott was in 2nd grade.

"get a NC shortly"?

Sure you you will dwag, just like you did last year, the year before, the year before that..........rinse and repeat......since 1980. Hope springs eternal.

@RuePaulJohnson Campbell wasn't even all that heralded of a recruit. Watkins was a HS stud, but the type of stud we rarely ever got back then and rarely ever get now. Im not sure what your point is. You cherry pick two random players and pretend that those guys were a good representation of GT recruiting? Have you convinced yourself that GT was swimming with 4 and 5 star recruits for years and CPJ came in and destroyed the program?

GTBob
GTBob

@RuePaulJohnson If FSU didn't want to wait on his test scores then we didn't beat them out for him. Either way he wasn't a highly ranked recruit like Watkins was. He was a solid guy with some decent offers, just like Philpott. I hate to inform you of this but getting quality players isn't a bad thing. I know you want nothing but can't miss 5 star WR's but sometimes guys like Campbell and Philpott are good guys who can help your program and we should feel fortunate when we get them.

@GTBob His favorite program gets plenty of four and five star players.
