On Father’s Day, Tyler Cooksey decided to follow in his father’s footsteps to play football for Georgia Tech.

The 3-star linebacker from Greater Atlanta Christian committed to Georgia Tech on Sunday, picking the Yellow Jackets among 20 offers, including his three other finalists of UNC, Duke and Stanford.

Cooksey’s father, Tom Cooksey, played nose guard at Georgia Tech from 1976-79, and earned a degree in Industrial Management.

“My dad played at Georgia Tech, and that’s one of the main reasons that I’ve been attracted to Georgia Tech from the beginning,” Tyler told the AJC. “At first, I was really into Tech. Then as I got a little further into the recruiting process, I got away from Tech. All of sudden in the past couple of weeks, I’ve come back and realized that it’s my home and that I want to play here. My family can watch me because it’s so easy to get down to Tech compared to the other schools.”

The younger Cooksey is Georgia Tech’s ninth commitment for 2015, and projects to play inside linebacker for the Yellow Jackets.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is rated as the state’s No. 66 overall prospect via 247sports.com composite rankings.

Nice video. Good nose for the ball. Lives in the backfield. Excellent tackling form. And good speed for a linebacker.

Pooka....

The starting nose guard at Florida in the early 70s was around 200 lbs.  That was before they starting putting "things" in the milk that kids drink.

Good looking mom. Oh, back to the real story.   Dad played nose guard during playing days, looks like he could play running back today.

Greetings from Japan. Sitting in the Osaka airport waiting to fly to Indonesia. HAD to log in and express my excitement at seeing this news. Gotta love it when a legacy signs. Also gotta love it when a troll like Okiedwag is too dumb to realize why his posts got deleted. GO JACKETS!!!

He's ranked 45 on Rivals not sure where the 66 comes from. Could always use a good tackling, fast, aggressive LB. Good pick up

Hey "OkieDwag",  How many times has your school been a top 10 recruiter in the last decade??????.......and where has it gotten you???

Paul Johnson better watch it. He keeps putting together classes like last year and this year, and it's going to tarnish his reputation as just being an Xs and Os guy with no ability to recruit.

Congrats to the young man.  Wish him the best, except once a year against the Dawgs.

Says on his yahoo recruiting page that he was recruited by Ted Roof.  That had to have helped persuade him.  Older, fun, energetic dude like that could probably get on anybody's good side.  I have a feeling that as long as Roof is here, we're going to be getting some good defensive talent.

Offers from schools such as:  Boston College, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisville, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Carolina, NC State, Northwestern ,Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UAB, UCF, and Wake Forest.

Not a bad list there.  How do you think the trolls will try to spin this one around?

@OkieDawg Not sure what you're talking about. Didn't delete you the first time. We have many people monitoring all of the blogs, and when somebody flags a post, we have people that review each complaint.

@Redfin more than 70 players kicked off, failed out or arrested over that decade with a few making it to the NFL but a lot more not.

@Birmingham__Jacket  i am thinking he has made some smart coaching moves.

cook is not only a good recruiter. he is young and he is considered an up an comer wrt offense.  if i remember right it was cook who got cpj interested in the diamond formation.

roooooooooooooooooooooof........ maybe not the BEST coordinator we could have gotten but he is a tech man. he is from georgia.  he has the kind of personality that players are attracted to. he has coached on a national championship team.

cpj is a realist.  i am sure he knows he aint a st richt as far as closing goes.  my guess is he is  allowing roof to me more of the visible face of recruiting and just doing the final close.

as far as getting young men like this to sign with gt? 15 of  16  players graduating takes back seat to NO TEAM in the  nation.  that is on cpj and the priorities he has set as a head coach.

I'm not sure, but we all know they will. Give it time.

Fewer than 50% of all incoming freshmen graduate from GT. So obviously this isn't a priority to the institution as a whole.  While I understand the APR requirement for student athletes, the emphasis on graduating players simply eludes me, since graduating students as a whole is obviously no very important to those who run Georgia Tech.

HighTechJacket99
HighTechJacket99

In response to the APR requirement, schools like UNC and UGA have majors like African-American Studies and Recreation to steer athletes who would not normally be college material. Tech does not have that luxury, so it has taken extra work by the athletes and support from the GTAA to achieve this APR requirement. You should watch the ESPN show "Outside the Lines" to learn about the excesses at UNC and the unintended consequences of the APR requirement.

Who wants an engineer that can barely graduate?  That's not good for anyone.  That's why I changed to IM.

charlestonian77

@TechTroll13 come on now troll think this through before making such silly statements.

unless things have changed the class average for most degrees at gt is  2.+.

would you take the wager that i can find many gt grads who barely made it  through and are now highly successful?

unless you have some data the rest of us dont how do you know how well those 15 grads did ?

the point i was making was wrt recruiting, not the general school population.  maybe you dont care but i promise you that 15 out of 16 is a pretty big deal to many of the parents of the recruits.

any time we make a good impression on the parents of a recruit is a huge plus in my book.

AND WE ALL KNOW WE NEED EVERY SINGLE ADVANTAGE WE CAN MUSTER.
