Ex-Alabama RB Alvin Kamara commits to Tennessee over UGA, others

By Michael Carvell

Alvin Kamara (AJC)

Alvin Kamara (AJC)

Tennessee will be the next stop for Alvin Kamara, the AJC’s Mr. Football for 2012.

The former Norcross High School running back committed to Tennessee over the weekend via his Twitter account.

Kamara is currently enrolled at Hutchinson junior college and will be able to play at Tennessee for the 2015 season. Kamara also visited Clemson, and had told 247sports.com’s Rusty Mansell that UGA wanted him again.

Last year as a senior at Norcross, Kamara put on an Alabama baseball hat over UGA in front of ESPN’s cameras on signing day.

He left Alabama after a rough freshman season: Kamara injured his knee before the start of his freshman season, and was suspended at least twice for what Alabama coach Nick Saban called “behavioral issues.”

At Tennessee, Kamara will be reunited with former Norcross tight end Jason Croom, who posted a picture with Kamara from his Instagram account:

Tennessee also got commitments over the weekend from a pair of teammates from Buford High School, linebacker Austin Smith and defensive lineman Quay Picou. Smith was a pretty big deal, with the Volunteers beating out UGA, LSU, South Carolina and Florida, among others. Smith had originally planned on announcing his college decision in August, but changed his mind after attending Tennessee’s Junior Day on Saturday.

Tenn is a good choice. Leaving one school with a crowded backfield to go to UGA with a crowded backfield makes no sense.

If Saban kicked him off of the team because of behaviorial what did he do commit murder.  If he was that bad @ Bama, no way Richt was going to screw with this kid!

Flash in the pan, may have half-dozen decent highlights in a career that goes nowhere; and won't be heard from again.

@TravisBickle5150 ….fyi King and Crowell signed at UGA out of high school. Once they were determined to be trouble makers then they were kicked off the team. UGA has higher standards than most schools.

Wow...what poor journalism.  UGA had not offered Kamara since he was chased off from Bama....so he only chose UT "over UGA" in HIS mind!

UT has 3 True freshman rb and 2 committed already. Kamara will be entering a crowded backfield with already established backs.. IDK what these guy be thinking.

I'm sure the kid wants what all athletes want -- maximum playing time.  He has a lot better chance seeing the field at TN.  UGA was interested in him as a back-up -- to provide depth.  I hope he turns things around and doesn't end up following the path that Crowell took.

The day I get hurt by some kid not committing to the University of Georgia, that is the day I slit my wrists.  Sorry, I don't get that upset or excited by it.  He wants to play at UT, fine.  yawn.

Competition isn't his thing. Come to UGA and sit behind Chubb, Michel, Douglas, and Marshall. (Gurley will be gone more than likely after this season). I believe it's in Marshall's best interest to stay for his senior year.

He did the right thing by going to Tennessee. Do they have a lot of backs? I don't believe so. Tennessee is going to be hurting this year. They have a very tough schedule (seems like they always do) and they lost every starter from last year's O-line and don't have a sure starter at QB yet (Worley or Dobbs).

I believe the reason he did not come to UGA is because they have been kicking problem children off the team now! I think that's a good thing. UGA has to make an example no matter how good the talent. We want players that want to be apart of Bulldog nation for the right reasons!!

He can definitely  be a threat for the Vols as a all purpose back.

But my personal opinion Uga needs to go after Tyson Williams out of SoCarolina...I felt he should have been THE TOP RB on Uga's board from the very  beginning .This dude highlight film is very impressive.

There people who go to school at Alabama and Tenn. and there are people who play football and basketball. Until academics matter, it is like changing jobs to these guys.  I had a lot of friends who left school because they couldn't handle the work but  I can remember anyone leaving on their own free will or were happy about it.

The AJC would have blasted UGA if Kamara ended up there.

For some reason I figured he would go to Auburn. Seems to be the Auburn man type.

Kamara to Tenn is good news.  He couldn't play at Alabama, and he would never crack the top 5 at UGA.  Best wishes for a mediocre career with the Vols.

Commitment # 11 for the Jackets today! Harlan Howell out of Wheeler HS (GA) just announced. 6'3" 200 lb WR 3* on both 247 and Rivals. Welcome aboard Harlan!

@TrueDawg1986  Again according to 24/7 and Rival.com he did have an offer from uga....but what do they know after all you're "True"dawg

@DawginCO Just make sure the slits are up and down the wrists and not across. Good luck.

@DawgGoneIt  AND their defense needs a couple of years to get up to snuff as well.  The cream sickle orange fans are not going to like this year very much, most likely.

@Cedrickc Not to mention the fact that UGA did NOT offer the kid after he was booted from Bama

@Cedrickc What about the hammer time gang? 2 are still on the team.

@TheOldGuy Oh yea Auburn cheats right, not the humps just everybody else. Try "TheOldStupidGuy" yea, that's the ticket.

Yeah, what happened to wanting him so bad and being so upset when he committed to us?  And if it weren't for an inexplicable fumble, you boys would be loking at a six loss season and looking to beat those mediocre Vols this year.

Cedrickc

@OldJacketFan When GT becomes a primary passing team then I will be worried about a 6'3" WR but since they are run first, second, and maybe pass on third down. This gets NO attention!!!

@OldJacketFan If someone commits to Tech and no one cares, except the few Tech nerds on this site, did he really commit?

Really starting to feel sorry for you Gtcaryd ...

You really must have no life...

You live on UGA blogs 24/7...

At least the other Trolls lay out once in awhile.

Even POAD has to iron his shirts or something, take care of his Dad...

Your just a lonely pitiful boy..

I guess I should take it easy on you

Card or whatever...

Get help...

You really need it...

@TravisBickle5150 Last time I checked UGA has 6 backs that are better than Kamara....he was never offered after being booted from Bama

@Realisticfan @OldJacketFan

Well, whether you care or not is up to you. But since he's local and all I figured it'd be nice to go ahead and get it out in the local newspaper for him.

@Grant1296 Maybe DawginCO, also known as Floyd can give you a close shave too. Enjoy your busy day, iron a shirt or two sport.

I actually went to Alabama, and graduated, so yes, US! I know it's hard to understand due to the fact that only about 6% of all Georgia fans actually went to school there or have even been on campus. Got anything else to say?

@FlatTire it is kinda like watching a UGa football player try to color inside the lines on his Capstone Course coloring book?

Oh my so funny, my sides are hurting from your wildly humorous comments! Such a funny, funny man!  Tell me,, when are you going to appear on Comedy Central so I can be sure to tune in?

FlatTire

@JohnMknight  no; more like watching a Tech grad spray painting graffiti around the Tech neighborhood

FlatTire

@OldJacketFan

Calvin Johnson the WR who graduated before Coach Johnson?

and

D Thomas the WR who wanted to transfer when Coach Johnson was hired?

OldJacketFan
OldJacketFan

@FlatTire @OldJacketFan

Ah now don't go moving the goal posts. You said Tech passing bloopers show, remember. Nary a word qualifying that statement.

Oh and I can also add D Smelter, R Godhigh and a few others but point made. Go along now and lick your wounds.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@OldJacketFan  lick my wounds?

Tech passing yds

2013  1695

2012  1818

2011  1850

2010  1091

2009  1774

2008  1290

UGA passing yds

2012  3991

2011  3423

2010  3151

2009  2615

2008  3610

Let me know when Tech tries to crack the 1900 yds in a season mark

OldJacketFan
OldJacketFan

@FlatTire

And your point is? Unless you deaf dumb and blind you know Tech is a run heavy team so your numbers are nothing but a straw man. I assume you know what a straw man is?

As I said go lick your wounds

TrueDawg1986
TrueDawg1986

@OldJacketFan @FlatTire Why would he lick his wounds?  YOU are the Troll posting on the pages of the ONLY relevant football program in the state.  Run along now and lick YOUR wounds.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@OldJacketFan and that was my original point about getting a QB that can throw to your receiver that you want everyone to know Tech just got; we all know Tech is a run heavy team

once again lick what wounds?

gtcaryd
gtcaryd

@TrueDawg1986 Moron, what leads your dumbazz to believe this is a crotch sniffer blog?

OldJacketFan
OldJacketFan

@FlatTire

Another straw man

Tech's receivers catch the ball well enough and block well enough to wind up in the NFL. So yes, I'm happy that Tech picked up another 6'3" 200 lb WR today to go along with the other 6'3 200 lb WR they got on 6/8.

Your rant was directed more at QBs so you might want to take a look at the 2 QBs Tech has committed for the '15 class.

Like a lot of dawg fans you want to belittle anything about Tech but in the case it kinda hard to do it without coming off a tad petty. So yes, now's the time for you to slink off into the corner and lick your wounds.

gtcaryd
gtcaryd

@OldJacketFan Don't waste your time, he is a dawg fan who can't stand the dawgs and his fellow fans can't stand him. L 7 weinie!!

FlatTire
FlatTire

@OldJacketFan  I still have no wounds to lick; I gave you facts; your QB's haven't even thrown 2000 yds

again my original point was you need a QB

as for dawgfans belittle Tech fans; you might ought to take a look at a Tech blog and a UGA blog; not only will you find less interest in the Tech blog you find less UGA fans on a Tech blog like you do with Tech fans on a UGA blog

keep decorating that straw man; its looking good

OldJacketFan
OldJacketFan

@FlatTire

Yet you've still managed to fail to make a valid or applicable point. So despite not having a QB that hasn't thrown for 2000 yards plus Tech shouldn't have quality WRs? Yes, that a very astute point, sure it is.

This is a recruiting blog, not a GA blog. At to what other do or don't do that is that is up to them. You've never seen me comment on a GA blog and you never will.

Keep digging that hole and making your straw man arguments. It's very entertaining.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@OldJacketFan  wow and you didnt even read what I posted

1. where in that post did I say this particular blog was a UGA blog?

2. where in that post did I say you were one of the Tech fans posting on the UGA blogs?

3. No where did I say Tech cant have quality WR

4. Again congrats on getting a WR in a system that doesnt throw the ball much cause you dont have a QB that can throw the ball well; as my original point

hows that straw man looking?

OldJacketFan
OldJacketFan

@FlatTire

Oh and as to QBs, here's a little nugget from 247 on one of Tech's 2 QB commitments for '15

 13. Jaylend Ratliffe, QB, Georgia Tech - In two years, he’s led his team to the state title game twice racking up more yards on the ground than in the air. Ratliffe has rushed for 3,519 yards and 51 touchdowns in that span to go with 3,222 yards and 31 touchdowns in the air. Where does a quarterback that’s more advanced in running than throwing go? To flourish in Paul Johnson’s vaunted triple option.

FlatTire
FlatTire

@OldJacketFan commitments for 15?  thats a nice story;

are they currently playing for Tech?
