Top junior wants offer from UGA

By Michael Carvell

There was a ton of D1 talent at last weekend’s Corky Kell 7-on7 tournament, including 5-star Taj Griffin of McEachern High School.

But nobody on the field was more impressive to me than Archer High School wide receiver Kyle Davis.

He’s a rising junior, so that’s why you haven’t heard much about him yet. But you will. He’s already got 15 early offers, including Miami, Ole Miss and Louisville. Expect that number to double by December.

Kyle Davis is what recruiting analysts like to call a “freak” because he has freakish talents. He’s a monster at wide receiver at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds. It’s like watching a middle linebacker play wide receiver.

But Davis looks so graceful with his size, speed and agility. He has a gift for catching the ball at the highest point, and for always having his body in position to shield the defender and make the catch.

And there’s some good news for UGA in the below video:

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1496419233001?bctid=3638510998001

Davis led Archer to the championship at the 7-on-7 tournament.

I hope he gets that UGA offer. On first impression, Archer seems like a player who will play smart and add character.

Hope he becomes a Dawg.....He looks in the mold of the Thomas Davis type players in the early 2000's

You all do realize that UGA can only offer around 25 scholarships each year, right? There are about 300 kids from the state of GA each year that go d-1... I'm sure that's richt's fault, though.

Who is Mark Richt success wise?

I found an article with direct quotes from Richt about his strategies for recruiting offensive linemen.

"Richt says offensive line doesn't have to be dominant"

There is more to the article than that quote, but the quote is a fair summarization of Richt on recruiting O-lineman

Grounded, intelligent kid.  Have no idea if he can play but if he can this is exactly the type any program should be scrambling for.

It must be something in the water but CMR and Fantasy Football Dimitroff (FFD) both seem to just ignore the OL.  FFD was forced by his owner to address the lines but CMR still hasn't addressed the OL.

RandyHall is always right:  It's time for CMR to win a national Championship and UGA needs to recruit better, especially on the OL.  It's amazing how many self professed UGA fans can't comprehend the obvious.

As they say - common sense isn't that common.

Heck, what about against Bama in the SEC championship game?

You're up 21-10 in the 4th and Gurley gets stuffed on 3d and short. It turned the entire game around.

Richt and Bobo would like UGA fans to think that you couldn't hold leads because of your defense. That may be partially true, but the fact is, it's your inability, because of a weak offensive line, to control the ball and clock when you need to. It really shows up when you lose to less talented teams like Vanderbilt and Nebraska.

Y'all use the excuse of injuries to your skill players, but everyone suffers those. When it happens, a strong, physical and DEEP offensive line allows you to wear down defenses and win the games you're supposed to.

In the face of this Richt and Bobo refuse to change. It's incredibly frustrating and heck, I'm a Bama fan. I can't imagine what it's like for y'all.

@Superguard  Give 'em time, they figure someway to pull it off.  Logic has very little to do with it.

Actually 184 signed with FBS schools in 2014.  25 out of 184 is still a pretty small % considering there are dozens of schools that regularly recruit the state.  That is 13.5% of the total recruits in the state that Georgia could sign.

Anybody and everybody that makes a logical, reason-based, objective, statistical-driven analysis of why UGA is not a year-in-year-out elite SEC program will come up with the same conclusion.

Your distractors prove your point for you when all they can make are brain-dead, juvenile, ad hominine replies.

@Kushdawg I thought that was Gardner's fault?  I'm a die hard but we can't offer all these kids early and we recruit on a regional scale not just this state.

I like this kid and really hope we get on the ball but I can't pretend to know what the coaches are recruiting.  He's not an OL so most the loud minority will be screaming to the heavens that we don't know what we are doing!

@Reaganite First it  was a Linebacker  that deflected  the pass in 2012, and it  was  Gurley not  an  O lineman that missed his  assignment on the  final play.

UGA76 You are soooooo right.  You build a team inside out!  Meaning both lines of scrimmage!!!!!  I don't know with all of the years of CMR being an offensive coordinator he doesn't get that.  It seems like we are alway lagging behind in having quality starters and backups on both sides of the ball!

A N Y B O D Y who is a serious member of DawgNation   that truly believes CMR and his staff are deliberately ignoring/delaying action regarding the OL or any other significant part of UGA football is either living in a cave or is a fool.  You and your ilk are either trolls  or fools!!!!!!

The $3 million plus that CMR receives each year is not something he will knowingly let run aground. He has shown his concern by giving part of his salary to his staff so he is looking out for   E V E R Y B O D Y    seriously involved  with UGA Football!!!!!!!!!

DawginCO
DawginCO

@UGA76  Get real people!  You don't pass on a dominant WR to get O-linemen.  The O-line will be just fine.  If you don't have players to take advantage of the O-line you end up with a vanilla offense.  Did the great offensive line that UT had a couple years back help them get beyond being middling?  No.  You have to have players that can take advantage of the holes.  You have to have a QB that can take advantage of the time the line buys him.  You have to have receivers that can create separation and catch bad balls on occasion.

This constant harping on the O-line is ridiculous.  It's not as good as it can be.  But it isn't terrible or even close to it.  Look at the end of the SC and UF games last year people.  You do not push around good defenses that way if you have a bunch of crappy linemen.

When defenses stack the line you have to be able to make them pay for it.  No one can just line up and run the ball against a good defense nowadays.  Look at the Rose Bowl.  Stanford plays power football and Sparty stuffed them.  They didn't have a dominant WR that could make Sparty pay for stacking the box.  Look at LSU a couple of years back?  Great running game but not enough at WR to balance things out and get teams back on their heels.  If you pass on the dominant WR to get a lineman you just slit your throat.  And in recruiting if you de-prioritize skill positions to get linemen you end up empty handed later.

Georgia's offense is just fine.  The Achilles heel has been the defense for years now.  That is where the priority is and they are doing a good job of stocking that side of the ball.  Give Pruitt a year or 2 to get the defense up to snuff and then you will be seeing a team that is SEC CG worthy every year.  And that means being a contender for the 4 team playoff every year.

DawginCO

@Reaganite How about blabber mouths that can't figure out the obvious.  The offense set records, the defense sucked.  A better D in 2012 and Georgia is National Champs.  That is pretty damned obvious.  How is that for pointing out who "just doesn't get it"?  That would be you and the other trolls.

DawginCO
DawginCO

@TIDE_ROLL I seem to remember that the Bama D did that to everybody not just Georgia.  It wasn't the O-line that lost the game for the Dawgs in the SEC CG, it was the D-line and the roller skates they were wearing.

And that same dead tired D stuffed Bama when the game was on the line.  You couldn't run out the clock and almost lost the game because of it.  The best collegiate O-line perhaps of all time.  Some convenient memories need to be refreshed.

Richt hasn't won a National title yet because he has never had the entire package at the same time.  The 2001-2005 teams were stout defensively and pretty vanilla offensively.  And then the defense went south and the offense took over.  The offense is setting records so the O-line must not be too terribly bad.  It could be better for sure but it isn't like the pitiful showing that Texas has made of it in recent years.

Getting dominant WRs is not something you pass on to get O-linemen.  Sorry, it just isn't.

@TIDE_ROLL That great Oline sure didnt hold up last year, especially in the Sugar Bowl. Another embarrassing Sugar Bowl for Alabama/Saban.

It was more of a joke than a serious comment.  Georgia will offer after everyone else like they always do.  That's more of a telling comment.  Think of how many of this state's top recruits left because they got no consideration from Georgia early.  How many times have we heard on these blogs about Georgia fans complainingabout their coaches being late to the party?

Reaganite
Reaganite

@Dawgilama

I'll give you that.  I'll go back and watch the play.  I recall the defender coming from the edge, making a great jump/play and barely tipping the ball.  One could say "if Murray had been 2'' taller he would have made the pass.  I wasn't calling out UGA's o-line or anything/anybody about UGA.

UGA's offensive line played a great game.  We probably blocked Alabama better than anybody else Alabama played that season.  I think the entire UGA team played a great game and the coaches coached a great game (even Grantham.)

BUT, Alabama's O-line destroyed our defensive front.  That was clearly proven by the stat sheet and score board.

Recruiting the BEST O-linemen is a top priority each and every year for Coach.Saban.

Saban has 4 National Championships.

@Snagglepuss  You and I both know that most of these folks are just mouthing what they've heard other people say.  If they are trolls it's out of hate.  If they are pseudo fans it is just ignorance.  The O-line isn't as good as it it could be but it isn't even close to terrible.  But if they want to post stupid crap then that is their business.  I know it's crap, annoying crap, but it is still crap.

Well if you had scored more points than all your opponents you wold be undefeated champs.  If you had NFL players on your team you would have been champs.  IF...IF...IF...IF...  That's all we ever hear from Georgia fas.  The point is that you get to the point where your team is the best all over the field, not just on one side of the ball.  Georgia cannot put it all together and that's why you're not champs, not because your offense is setting records and you have no defense.  You just don't have what it takes on both sides of the ball, and you don't have the coaching.  PERIOD!

Dawgilama
Dawgilama

@Reaganite @Dawgilama IF Gurley doesn't  blow his assignment Murray could have  been 5'5" and the pass wouldn't have  been tipped.

The Bama  TD pass was one of the  few times MCCarron had  time to throw the  entire  game. Saban in an interview  after  the game  was  said  Bama had  to run the  ball , they were having trouble  stopping  the  Georgia  pass rush. (3 sacks  and  11  Qb hurries). Unfortunately  for Georgia   as  talented  as Jarvis  and  Ogletree were  at rushing the passer they struggled  shedding blocks  vs the  rush.

DawginCO
DawginCO

@Reaganite  Simple fact:  We will probably not see another O-line like the one Bama fielded in 2012 in our lifetimes.

DawginCO
DawginCO

@Contractor1  What part of "the offense was good and the defense sucked" do you not get?  That is the definition of not having it all together.  The offense did their job and would have done it even better if the 4 top WRs and top 2 RBs did not go down to injuries.  The defense gave up tons of points and couldn't get off the field on 3rd down.  That Captain Obvious is why the Georgia Bulldogs did not win the Eastern division last season.  It had nothing to do with the offense.

There were no "ifs" in my post.  You must be having hallucinations, dreaming up what you thought I said.  The post was 100% factual.

And guess what, you don't have to hear Georgia fans  and their ifs, if it bothers you so badly, fool.  It's called staying off blogs where we voice our opinions.  Exercise your power of choice and don't come here.  Yeah, just like TV.  If you don't like it, change the channel.

So unless you do that, stuff a sock in it.  In 2007, even after Saban was hired, Bama fans were saying very nearly the same things.  If you don't win it all then there is always ifs and when and next year.

After 2012 any talk from the Barn about winning the SEC was absolute fantasy wasn't it?  But guess what, they did it.  So all you know it alls have nothing to complain about when Georgia fans talk about the  possibilities of championships.  Our team has a more realistic chance The Barn did last year.  Can you argue that?  If you do then you're a freaking looney.

So go elsewhere if you don't like what we say.  This the the Atlanta newspaper and the last time I checked, that is in the state of Georgia.  If I were to come to Bama blogs saying these things you might have a gripe.  You will never get that opportunity because I wouldn't do that.  So stop the whining.

It's ALWAYS "Well if" "If" "Almost" and there is always an excuse.  You weren't five yards away from playing from the Championship game, because you were four points from winning the game, HUGE difference.  Your team didn't play well enough to win, hence why they didn't.  We didn't either, but our talent on both ends of the ball showed superior to your teams.

I make no excuses for us losing to Auburn last year.  We had our chances and failed.  Now it was an improbable ending, anyone will say that, but I knew if it went to Overtime we would probably lose.  It all comes down to the fact that I can admit my team's shortcomings and be realistic.  I don't make excuses for the Oklahoma loss either, we got spanked.

Contractor1
Contractor1

So what's your point?  I don't understand what you're trying to get at.

Contractor1
Contractor1

Huh?  All I'm getting from this is that you're harping on our last two losses like we just went 4-8 last year.  Is that all you have on us, is losing two games to the Big 12 Champion and the SEC Champion?  Boy, you Georgia fans need a life.  I think you need to focus more on your team's shortcomings and five losses from alst year rather than attempt to make fun of us for losing two games.  Georgia and their fans would kill to only lose two games a year on average.  Back to the drawing board you go.

Oh, and our 2014 quarterback will be just as good if not better than your 1 on the depth chart, not to mention we have weapons all over the field.  Georgia can't ven field a secondary, so yeah, plenty to worry about in Athens, not near as much to worry about in Tuscaloosa.
