Nation’s No. 1 athlete for 2016, Savannah’s Demetris Robertson (AJC/Michael Carvell)

Savannah’s Demetris Robertson, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 “athlete” prospect from 2016, committed to Alabama on Tuesday, his brother told the AJC.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pounder is a rising junior at Savannah Country Day high school.

Robertson, who has 24 early scholarship offers, recently told Rivals that he intended to take an unofficial to UGA on Thursday and then hang out for Friday’s Dawg Night. It’s not known whether or not Robertson will still visit UGA at this time.

Robertson, who is rated as the nation’s top athlete in the 247sports composite rankings, is projected to play wide receiver or safety in college.

Nick has to get the offensive side of the ball playing up to it's potential.Kirby can offer no help with that. It will be interesting to see of Kiffen holds the key.

Bama gets another top athlete, who'd a thunk it.

That's funny when the Dawgs call Alabama folk "moonshiners". A dumb redneck is a dumb redneck, no matter the state. And to you underachievers that claim Nick can't coach: 3 NCs in 4 years. Does UGA even have 3 NCs in their unspectacular history?

To all the arrogant Bama fans.  You don't even own your own state.  Auburn beat you with less talent.  So shut the heck up and go back to your moonshine business.

goes to show how terrible these recruiting services actually are.. they ranked Keith Marshall 50 spots above Todd Gurley ...  that says it all

Long way to go before he's ready to compete in the SEC.

Congrats to this kid. Don't know why UGA, pretty much ignores South Ga. I know there's a lot of fish in the pond, but this kid should have been priority#1 for Bobo or Pruitt. It's not too late to show him some love. UGA, needs to recruit ALL OF SOUTH GA.BETTER! For some unexplained reason, SC, UF, Fla.St., Aub., & Bama recruit our kids, why not UGA?

I guess that Escalade fleet impressed him.

Will flip into the UGA fold August 2015....

They probably wanted him at 170, not 165.

I bet the Dawgs didn't want him anyway.

I have a call in for Nick,Kirby, and Kevin Steele to advise them the experts on the AJC say we need to pull this scholly soon for he has little talent and only plays with kids. Errbody in Dixie has offered the kid a scholly but that must just be a decoy to get Nick and Bama to waste a scholly. Recruiting is a tuff business no doubt.

It depends, we talking preseason, recruiting, or after season ones?  No to two of those and a big YES to the other.

Says the guy whose team lost to Vanderbilt.  Don't forget, one inch away from losing the Tennessee too bubba.

@UrbanMeyerisapansie SCDS plays in Class A with small schools with around 250-400 students and generally only 30-50 football players. Smaller schools are generally lacking in big men on the lines overall but I can tell you that the competition in Savannah definitely doesn't suck, and region 3 that they play in definitely doesnt suck. Region 3 has put a team in the class A state championship game every year since 2007, 4 of those years being a Savannah team.

A lot of good football players have come out of that area over the years. Savannah really excels at baseball as well. Savannah is probably one of the most sports obsessed areas in the state of Georgia. It's no Atlanta, obviously just based on numbers, but Savannah holds it's own in terms of athletes.

This kid may not be playing against Norcross every week, but if he can play, it doesnt matter. He looks like he can fly.

Well go look at his performance at the recruiting camps.  Guess that blows your perception out of the water, because he's doing it against fellow recruits from all over the country, and even ones older than him.

@OriginalATLien: maybe that's why, you know, he is a 2016 prospect.  You DO understand that this means he has a "long way to go" before he has to BE ready to compete in the SEC, right?

He's showcased his abilities at The Challenge event against 2015 top recruits and showed out.  Boy, glad y'all research and know what you're talking about before you speak.

True. He could even fall out of favor by the time he graduates. Country Day is a very nice, small Private School.

@Blackoutanyone  When are we going to run our own state?  When is our coach going to coach and develop the talent he is bringing in to it's fullest.  Even Spurrier mentioned what a great recruiter is, but failed to mention anything about being a great coach.  If AU beats us 2 years in a row, are you still going to be bragging about a commit? What happened when AU beat us last season, as a direct result of a coach's decision?  He threw the kids on the kicking team under the bus, what chance does a 300+ lb OL have to tackle a return man in the open field?  Nick is without a doubt the top recruiter in the country, but there are questions about his ability to get the most out of them, or else we wouldn't be on a 2 game losing streak.

You'll probably have won two National Championships by the.  Atleast that's what Alternative and 350 think.

Willie -- Looks like Brandon Ivory is back atop the depth chart for "Fat boy clogging up the middle defense again"!! Those JUCO kids coming to campus are a little rough around the edges. :(

Reed with a DUI a month after driving down Hackberry for the 1st time! :(

Dew -- We'll always have to dodge bullets to keep our HC.

This yr it'll be NFL Teams again playing the role Texas played last yr. Roll Tide

This is the exact mentality that is killing Georgia.  Big time recruting schools process these guys by their junior year.  Being late to the boat every time is obviously showing when it comes to Georgia.  I think you can look at it and see clear as day.

Original ATLien,

Didn't say he was ignored. South Ga. on the whole, is given little more than a second thought. I said, he should have been a priority. #1 recruit in the Nation for 2016? Were we even in the picture? Our coaches, are falling behind our competition, if they miss out on a rising junior, who's ranked that high iN THE NATION!

Wow, dumbest comment I have seen in a long long time.  Doen't know if Saban has the ability to make the most of them?  I guess his three National Championships in five years don't show you he does?  Good lord what a moron.

Bamaman .... Hardly.

Three championships in four years and our hands on three more. Even on the internet, even on this board, your post is monumentally stupid. Welcome Demetris, and Roll Tide.

Big C....Nick had Jarran address the campers on Monday regarding his big mistake. He still has a chance to be a big part of our defense but his lease is less than a foot as of today. He was already in timeout before his drivers education event at midnight in TitleTown while drunk. He is a one and done player for sure and he is that good.

"This yr it'll be NFL Teams again playing the role Texas played last yr. Roll Tide"

I have to hand it to Saban - he has a heck of an agent.  He leveraged an opening at Texas into a a $1.4 MM a year increase with a 2 year extension (from $5.5 to $6.9, even though he was already under contract until he turned 68).  I guess when Blank fires Smitty his agent will be able to get him $10MM a year with his contract going until 2030 - when he turns 78

@keendaddy If you're trying to be taken seriously here, you'd be well served to know what you're talking about before spewing nonsense publicly. First, he's not the #1 prospect in the nation.  He's the #1 rated ATH. Second, UGA is well-aware of him and has been actively recruiting him.  He's been invited to Dawg Night and was planning on attending up until this announcment.  I don't know what his plans are now.  This kid grew up a Dawg fan and his recruitment is far from over.  There are two full football seasons to be played before he inks with anyone.  Finally, you simply aren't paying attention if you think UGA is ignoring South GA.  Think first, speak second.  It usually works out better that way.

Call us when you win something sport. Until then keep that recruiting spin going. No way you ever played a down of football but at least you understood your limitations. You're pretty much a jock sniffer at best.

Paulie -- Sure I'd like to see Saban break Bear's record of 6 Nat'l Titles, however for other selfish reasons, I'll gladly take Saban over Smitty @ the Branch beginning in 2015........after 1 more Bama Title of course. :) :)

I guess that's why many kids down here go to our Competitors, and very few make the trip to Athens. Guess you're not from around here...

Saban isn't going to coach after he retires from Bama (4 years)

Saban will not beat Coach Bryant's record.

It's been a great run for Bama.
