Recruit: Nick Saban and Kirby Smart are ‘Godfathers of college football’

By Michael Carvell

Alabama’s Nick Saban and Kirby Smart are “the godfathers of college football,” according to one of the state’s top defensive backs.

Lovejoy High School’s Montrell Custis switched his commitment from Kentucky to Alabama, and he explained his reasons in the below video:

I have to agree that Saban is the Godfather, willing to do anything and everything to win. Like the Godfather Saban will step on anyone that gets in his way. Alabama offers over 100 kids scholarships each year, accepts 30 to 40 commitments knowing that on signing day, they will tell 10 to 15 OOPS, you are no longer needed. They will over sign by 10 then CUT 10 from the roster.

As for Smart, this is a guy to keep an eye on. In two or three seasons UGA will have a top SEC defense and Pruitt will go on to become a Head coach somewhere, Smart will still be walking the sidelines at Alabama holding Saban's clipboard.

USCe coach Steve Spurrier putting some real meaning into the idiom... "On-The-Spur-of-the-Moment"... and it's so true too!

About Aabama...  Spurrier said. “I just made a statement I think they’ve had five No. 1 recruiting classes in the last six years. That’s got to make him the greatest recruiter in the history of college. So arguably they’ve got the greatest collection of football players ever assembled on a college team. … So they’re the favorites. As long as they recruit like that they’re always going to be the best".

"Fortunately the team that plays the best is the team that wins, instead of maybe who all’s got the best players.”

Suprising how any humans can be deceived so easily... I guess... monkey see, monkey do....

Hats off to Saban and Smart.  The quickest way to success is to emulate success: if UGA recruited O-linemen to the same degree as Bama we would have a couple more Championships.

When was the last time UGA went into Alabama and picked up 3-4 of Alabama's top recruits??????  Bama does it to us every year, especially O-linemen.

I fully support CMR, I just wish he would recruit O-linemen better.  CMR is the best MAN in college football, I just wish I could say he is the best regarding wins/losses and National Championships.

Saban and Smart are the godfathers of college football?

I'll buy Saban being Vito Corleone, but which one of his sons best desribes Kirby? Fredo or Michael?  I am pretty sure that Muschamp is Sonny

As a Dawg fan I will give them their due. Results are what counts and that staff at Bama get's them. As far a cheating, it's NOT going to happen under Saban ( intentionally). He has too much to lose to tarnish his accomplishments. I'll tip My Dawg hat to them.

I get more news on Alabama here on AJC than I do on AL.Com. Granted it is always Negative?? but nice to see Bama news on AJC. Keep up the Great work Micheal Carvell. Maybe some day Bulldogs will win the National Championship again? Been since 1980 Right?

Mike,

I demand to end these negative articles concerning Alabama!

Some how I am getting the idea you are trying to produce

positive articles on Ga and negative on  Alabama.

Where is the love?

Well if he were a basketball player i would say he is screwing up, but he wants a ring. Can't blame the kid for that.

@Athensdawg925 Hating on Saban does nothing to help UGA.  Not saying you are hating on Saban but I'm not aware of any cheating, rule breaking etc that Saban has done.

Gray shirting is questionable and I'm glad CMR doesn't do it but NCAA rules allow for it.  From what I read Saban is upfront with the kids who grey shirt and most take the attitude that they rather grey shirt at Bama than get a firm offer/scholarship at another school.  Credit Saban will creating a program that kids will gladly grey shirt at.

As far as cutting players, I wish UGA did it more often. I have no problem with cutting players who under perform.  Pro teams do it, companies do it, the military does it.  Even my high school coach would cut players during the season.

@Reaganite  You are wrong.  Better O-linemen would not have won any titles for Georgia.  Better defense would have won a title in 2012.  In fact 50 fewer yards given up to Bama on the ground would have been enough.  You can think what you will but better O-linemen is not the answer that is needed.  A better defense is.  And that process is underway.

@Reaganite CMR's failure to recruit dominant linemen is the difference between being a good team and a championship team. The proof is in the number of times a UGA rb has been tackled in the backfield, qb hurries and sacks.

@Reaganite Brother has you fooled. If that man is the best Man in college football,

we are all going to burn. Reagan, I have to tell you, you don't know a damn thing about winning

football if you think Brother is going to win anything.

You have a clue with the O lineman, but that is where you end.

Luckily enough Ga will always be people like you and they  will always come

up 5 yards short.

Keep up the Ga Way.

@96JB Saban is a class act and does things the right way.  Say what you want to about Alabama and their fanatic fan base but they do things as right as anybody else in college football (compared to Ohio State, USC, Pete Carroll, UF and Meyer, AU and Chiznik, Kiffen etc etc)

WhiskeyBreath

@dcole001 Yea, but they  have celebrated that one championship for 34 plus years.

Sometimes at the spring game. In their hearts, they have won it every year.

They still kiss Buck's backside like it was 1980.
When Buck doesn't get his backside kissed, he is not a happy boy.

He actually sounded a thousand times better than one Famous Jameis Winston.  Spoke like someone that can actually put a sentence together which is more than a lot of these recruits can do.

@CTOTWO He said he did not want to go to an inferior school like KY and Ga.

He wants to go to a school with superior academics like Bama.

Yeah, a deal that he'd be in the college football playoff and a chance to win a National Championship.  Georgia couldn't seem to stand behind such an offer.

@Reaganite @Athensdawg925

I never said what Saban does is cheating, however it is very unethical. Every year Saban leaves several kids hanging on until the last minute then says sory we are full, go look for another team.

@tomkat1111

The red-zone really exposes a weak O-line.  Traditionally UGA is weak/below-average in the red-zone.  If you can't control the line of scrimmage you get whipped in the red-zone.

@WhiskeyBreath  Richardbreath please do tell us how it is that you, a slime bag troll, are in any way fit to tell anyone about the character of any man?  You wouldn't recognize a good person if they whacked you upside the head with a 2x4.  Your persistent impugning of Mark Richt's character, against all evidence to the contrary, only highlights how stupid you are.

So tell us how it is that you are so discerning where as people that have actually met the man are fooled?  You are a blind Bama homer that trash talks on a sports blog, nothing more.  Banning you from these blogs would be a mercy to all involved.  It would essentially be an extermination.

Lane is in rehab at Bama. If he ever wants to be a HC again then he has to do a good job and show he has matured. It wouldn't surprise me to see Nick and Lane fight on the 50 yardline this year then again it might workout OK. Both better hope they can find a place kicker and punter or we might be in Nashville this Bowl season.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

Nick Saban understands that he isn't the greatest coach in football thus he has to out work the others, out recruit them, out prepare them, out physical them, and out discipline them. The Saturday he out coaches a great HC will be his 1st.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

Buck is much like Don Shula and that 17-0 thing. As long as UGA doesn't have but that one trophy then he is the Man.

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie nashville?  now you know that's not gonna happen.  with the current state of bama football, even with a disaterous injury plagued season that UF and UGA had last year, i don't see bama ever slipping out of playing on Jan 1st.

Contractor1

What exactly are you talking about?  Saban has a great supporting cast, but that's because he's the best head coach in the game.  He surrounds himself with capable individuals and molds them into smart winners.  I think college football analyst have done enough reporting and made enough comments to rove your point is pretty crazy.  No one out works Nick Saban.  All of these guys put in the time, but none out work the guy, and thus he's the best.

@KeepOnSmilingWetWillie Wet, you are so on the money.

Have you ever known somebody in your life like Buck.

Every day of the year the man lives to have his butt kissed.

I really think it is a miserable, insecure life.

Can you imagine how tough it is for his wife

to live with that ego?

He deserves a partner like Kincaid.

@P_The_Ricker @KeepOnSmilingWetWillie P-anything can happen...look at Auburn last year...weren't supposed to win 1 SEC game...played in Pasadena...that is why I don't predict UGA, or any other team,  winning anything...if they go into the season with a chance, I'm good with that...some teams have a better chance than others...Bama has the number 1 recruiting classes the last few years, ergo, they should start the season with a good chance...UGA has had several top 10 classes, so they should be pretty good, they have a chance...could go undefeated, could have 1, 2, 3 or 4 losses...lot of variables...go dogs

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie
KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

Expect the unexpected......got to make those 42-45 yard FG's when you stall and you will. Had Bama done that in 2013 we would be talking about a 4 peat.(perhaps). You have to be able to flip the field with a great punter or at least have one that can get it 55-58 yards to to receiver kick after kick and we don't have that as of today at Bama.

KeepOnSmilingWetWillie
KeepOnSmilingWetWillie

He is making a good living and I am happy for him. He is apart of UGA lore forever and that is good as well. I am glad Joe Willie isn't the only QB to win a NC.

DawginCO

@Dewnsav  Too many variables.  Auburn had outrageous luck to go along with being pretty good.  That is a tough combination to beat.  This year they will most likely have to be much better to overcome the lack of luck.

No one foresaw Bama losing 2 games.  Things that technically should not happen do happen.

The number of injuries is a big factor but also who is injured makes a big difference.  If Marshall goes down, Auburn is in trouble.  If Coker goes down, Bama is in trouble.  If Mason goes down, Georgia is in trouble.  If Winston goes down, FSU is in trouble.  Who gets hurt is where it really plays out.

No one can tell if those things will happen.  Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.  Roll the dice.

Our kicker missed a 56 yarder.  Give the guy a break.  A-Day is a scrimmage, but I highly doubt the #1 rated kicker out of high school a couple years ago is going to lead us to a bowl n Nashville.  I'm not saying we have Leigh Tiffin back, but doom and gloom about te kickers is something the Barners want us to worry about since it's the only phsycological hold they have on us right now.  Remember now, it took four missed field goals and a 100 yard missed kick return for a touchdown to beat us.  I think we're going to be just fine.
