Will nephew of UGA legend sign with Bulldogs?

By Michael Carvell

Will the nephew of a UGA football legend sign with the Bulldogs?

Charlie Woerner is a 6-foot-5, 220-pound wide receiver from Rabun County High School. And he’s ranked as the state’s No. 8 overall prospect for 2016.

His uncle is Scott Woerner, the All-America defensive back who clinched UGA’s national championship in 1980 with an interception against Notre Dame in the game’s final minutes.

Charlie already has five early offers, including UGA, Clemson, Tennessee, Duke and UNC. He also has serious interest from Alabama and FSU, among others.

Charlie’s coach at Rabun County is Lee Shaw, who is the father of former South Carolina QB Connor Shaw. Woerner plays wide receiver in high school but projects to be a tight end (where he’s never played) in college.

Woerner looked every bit of 6-5 at a 7-on-7 camp at Lassiter High School last week. Woerner (who starts at safety also) even had the chance to go head to head against Preston Williams, the nation’s No. 1-rated WR (he’s committed to Tennessee). Williams won many of the battles but Woerner had a respectable performance.

Back to recruiting: Some people think that it’s a foregone conclusion that Woerner (due to family connections) will sign with the Bulldogs. He talks about that and more in the below video:

Wow. Whoooooopeeeee. Awesome. Gnarly Dude. Man, thUGA will be winning the SEC, National Championship, and Super Bowl for years to come. Well at least until the season starts...then reality sets in and the 'necks realize that thUGA is a 6-7 win team.

Wow, 2016 could be an incredible class for the Dawgs. I like the way it is coming together and I don't see Eason, Charlie or Big Ben playing those silly hat games. Very mature young men for sure. I hope all 3 sign with the Dawgs.

Mitch Hyatt committed to Clemson because of his uncle, hopefully Charlie will continue Uncle Scott's legacy at UGA!

I believe Herchel Walker's nephew also went to Clemson.

I like this kid - he's already annoyed with reporters, lol.   Not a foregone conclusion to UGA by any means.  Clemson is very much in the mix and maybe even the team to beat right now.

Charlie's father was one of my high school football and wrestling coaches.  His father is Kent Woerner, Scott's older brother.  Kent played RB at Furman and NFL.  Charlie's mother was also a teacher at the same school.  Great people - hard working, integrity, caring for others etc.  Also very athletic family, Kent and Scott had another brother who was a stellar athlete.

I hope he signs with UGA.

He will enjoy catching passes from Eason.

Nice 2016 class forming.

C-Kirk hit it on the head.  Charlie is a quiet, laid-back kid who just wants to get better and help his team win. He is a tremendous athlete and will only get better. I believe he ran an 11 flat 100 meter this past spring as a sophomore in track.  He will look good in a G in a couple of years.

Actually I like this guy.

He is essentially saying this Recruiting thing is not for me. What happens , happens and you will find out when I can get around to committing. Real laid back guy who want privacy and zero attention. Meaning this is nobody's business except mine. Doesn't want any fan fair or encouragement from anyone. He is trying to say leave me alone in as nice a way as possible. I bet we don't get 5 hat in front of him. When he commits it will be short and sweet.

where'd you guys get Pappy status? Carvell clearly said his UNCLE!

I well remember his pappy. It would be the shock of the century in the annals of dawg football lore, if this kid goes anywhere other than UGA. I've never been more confident of a recruit coming to the UGA. 2016 starting to look good.

You are correct, but it was because UGa picked-up a much higher ranked TE and HW's nephew saw the writing on the wall. As it turned out, Herchel's nephew had a hideous senior season, but Clemson had already committed to him.

@caneowar  Don't get me wrong, and I fervently hope you are right, but oftentimes the son of a legend will sign with a school other that his Pappy's alma mater because he doesn't want the pressure that comes to constantly being compared to the legend.  Then again, maybe I worry too much!  GO DAWGS!

@dawginbama @caneowar Uncle Scott is not the only inside track for Georgia. Mike Bobo's dad teaches at Rabun County High School. The Woerner and Bobo family are good friends.

@Woofer @caneowar  Very accurate assessment. Jay Rome proved that by going to UGA instead of Clemson.
