Mike Davis for Heisman?

By Michael Carvell

Mike Davis for Heisman?

The former Stephenson High School running back is considered by some to be a darkhorse candidate for college football’s top award.

Davis rushed for 1,183 yards last season for South Carolina, which was the fourth-most in a season in school history for the Gamecocks.

Former South Carolina Heisman winner George Rogers thinks Davis is a legit Heisman candidate. ““No question about it,” Rogers told The State newspaper. “Mike Davis has got all the skills. He’s got the breakaway speed, he’s got the athletic moves. He’s a great running back and I don’t know if he’ll get the ball as many times as Marcus (Lattimore) did, but if he does, I’m sure he’ll be able to handle that.”

Stephenson coach Ron Gartell also weighed in on Davis, his Heisman chances, and Davis’ glory days of playing for the DeKalb County school in the below video:

Let's get it done Mike Davis...

The article did say he was a "darkhorse candidate" for the Heisman.  No one said he was in the final three.  That would be laughable in this "talking season."

Mike did lead the SEC in yardage in early 2013 as a sophomore.  Who expected that?  There are plenty of good reasons to watch him for 2014.  The Gamecocks have one of the most experienced OLs in the SEC for 2014.  It should be interesting.

Can't wait.

@DawginCO..."find a credible backup" you better check the Carolina roster. They are loaded at RB....three quality RB's back up Davis......Wilds, Williams, and Carson.

@P_The_Riker "word out of Columbia" where did you get the info? You don't have a clue about Davis in dining room vs weight room.

Anyone hearing any chirping about our freshman backs?  Is there any chatter yet from the summer workouts?

There might be a few backs that can handle 30 caries few few games but zero that can do that for more than a couple of games in a row.  The beating is unbelievable.  The chickens have to find a credible backup or Davis will spend the second half of the season struggling to stay in games.  He was slowed down late last year.

Spurrier played the "ride the stud" game and it served the team well with big wins but destroyed the stud.  Surely the OBC knows you can't do that now.  He better hope he can get some decent carries from his backups because everybody will be gunning for Davis this year.  Davis is good but he isn't better than Gurley.  By season's end he may not be better than Chubb for that matter.  Of course almost all of the Heisman hype will be decided on 9-13-14 in Columbia.  The back that shines that night will be the only one anyone pays attention from that point forward.  The bright lights matchup is where people's minds are made up and I think Gurley will have a game to remember.

I can't wait.

Also, for Mike Davis' sake, I hope he doesn't get the "Lattimore treatment" where he gets 40 carries a game and runs till the wheels fall off, literally. Nowadays backs don't get that many carries in a single game and last throughout an entire season. It just isn't going to happen.

Mike Davis won't win the Heisman and probably won't even be a finalist. It'll be a few QBs and maybe Gurley will make it if he stays healthy. If Gurley stays healthy, there's no doubt in my mind he'll be in New York. He's that good. Mike Davis is good though, gotta give it to him.

He's legit...good luck to him...except in Columbia against the dogs...go dogs

He would have to be better than Gurley and he's not.

word out of columbia is that davis has been spending more time in the dining hall than weight room this summer.  might need to hold off on the "davis for heisman" banners

Spurrier ruined Lattimore's career

Davis better hope South Carolina has some kind of a passing game because if he is all Spurrier has  he will be expected to carry the ball 30+ times a game. Maybe he will be okay for the first 5 or 6 games but by mid season  his body start breaking down and a possible injury will increase every game. Good luck to him.

After what happened to Lattimore all I can say to anyone who trust Spurrier to put their  health ahead of the team interest  is @@@@@@@@@. Fill in the rest of the sentence yourself.

Hopefully Steve Spurrier doesn't abuse him like he did Marcus Lattimore.

By the time the Gamecocks put that chicken foot up JawGA ' s posterior, y'all are going to be looking forward to the basketball season and that says a lot.

George knows he didn't deserve his.  Davis is certainly good enough.  Not sure the Gamecocks are, though.  Heisman is usually a team award.

Lattimore had 11 carries vs Tennessee before his injury.  The Miss St game he was not running with the ball when he got leg whipped

Fact 2010 he averaged 19 carries a game.  2011  23 carries a game.  2012 15 carries a game.  Care to compare UGA or bama backs.........Marcus ran 23 times vs bama, 31, 27.24 times vs UGA.  Gurley ran 30 times vs SC last year.

@P_The_Ricker @sportzfan Really???  I think a lot of people have heard of Brandon Wilds.  He is the guy that as a freshman stepped in for Lattimore who was injured and had 3 100yd games in a row.  He single handedly whipped Tennessee in Knoxville with a punishing ground game.
