Georgia Tech rises to No. 20 in Rivals rankings after landing RB

ATH TaQuon Marshall of Harris County

Georgia Tech moved up to No. 20 overall in the Rivals.com team rankings after Tuesday’s commitment of TaQuon Marshall.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound athlete from Harris County High School picked the Yellow Jackets over Wake Forest, Duke, Marshall and Cincinnati.

“It’s a great school with great academics,” Marshall told the AJC. “I felt like I fit in at Georgia Tech. They have a great coaching staff. With the other guys already committed, I felt like it would be a great class if I committed there.”

Marshall, who has yet to be rated as a prospect in the 247sports composite rankings, said he is projected to play A-Back at Georgia Tech. He will also return kicks and punts on special teams.

“I felt like I was ready to commit,” he said. “I felt like I was really sure that Georgia Tech was where I wanted to be. And I also told my parents that I wanted to go ahead and commit so I could really focus on my high school season, my teammates, and the goals we set for our season.”

Marshall is commitment No. 18 for Georgia Tech’s 2015 class. The Yellow Jackets now sit at No. 20 overall in the Rivals rankings, and have moved up to No. 30 in the 247sports composite rankings.

Couple of quick points...

1. Many, in fact most, boys do get bigger and we after their junior year of high school. Personally I went from 5-10 to 6-1 from age 17-20.

2. Most recruiting rankings have numbers as a factor. Right now Tech is at 20. Sure the big bits will add some of the big name recruits and jump up, but CPJ, CTR and company will add more kids as well given the number of open scholarships. A couple of our unrated kids will also get ratings. While I don't believe we will end up between 10-20, I also don't believe they will be in the 40s either.

3. This is shaping up to be the best class under CPJ. I am most encouraged by the fact that he has brought in good recruiters (Roof, McCollum, Pelton) to the staff. He has changed his philosophy, which means he is learning.

4. I am thrilled that we continue to make academics and character primary in our student athletes. Other football programs would have figured a way to keep the Autry brothers. However, if you can't keep the honor code or do the school work, while i wish you well in life and offer no ill will toward you, I prefer to not have you associated with the Institute.

This  class will wind up in the  40's  just like all of PJS other  classes , the only thing  boosting this class up is the number of recruits.

You can always tell when you get to the cry babies that like to take their toys and go home when your good-natured comments poking fun at your rivals are deleted from their precious little boring blog.  Especially when the person who reported you (and will do so this time as well) habitually goes on your blogs and runs down your program.  I am disappointed that one of you babies can't take a post where there is no profanity and no personal attacks without doing your little censor job.  It is a long season bugs, and it as usual, will be way longer for you.

I do have to say that UGA does the least with the most top quality recruits year in and year out. Congrats to them. That they continue to get 5 stars, heck 4 stars, is a testimony to their promises.

The best  I can figure out is that some "people" are sociopaths. They like to go on sport blogs and disparage the coach, program and fans.

"Maggots" really?

"legitimate" please...

There's nothing about your post that speaks well about you "loran". You need intense therapy with a psychiatrist that has a great deal of experience with sociopaths. Otherwise you are a waste of time and perfectly good air. Good luck "loran".

We at Georgia hope the Maggots have an OK season, as we do not want "man boobs" Johnson to be fired. He's our best recruiting tool. Thanks to him for freezing some verbal commitments so that we have more time to evaluate them before we flip them to a legitimate football program

Hey GTBob, if they are so good why are the majority not rated and not even ONE is a 4 Star. I really  hope Coach Know It All has a decent year as we really would not want for him to be fired.  As long as he's there we don't have to worry about losing ANY 4 or 5 star in state recruits to the Bumblebees, or games for that matter. Here's wishing you luck in those first 3 really hard games against the likes of Little Sisters of the Convent. Also I will shed a tear over your loss of the "Crown jewel" of your recruiting class Myles Autry and the abrupt exit of the "Savior" of Bumblebee football VAD LEE, go James Madison (another one of those Major offers he had).

DYNAMICBIGBOY

What a joke. I wonder how much Coach Paul Know it All paid to have the bees rated this high. Over half their commits are NR and except for a center rated #13 the ones who are rated are the 50's & 60's +.  Most the the bumblebees were only offered by the likes of TROY, COASTAL CAROLINA, ETC,. until Tech offered then they JUMPED at the chance for a D1 school as they never thought they would get one. I have never seen so many recruits commit on the first offer. Again, "WHAT A JOKE".

Wonder what will happen when this little guy meets the big guys. Seems we'll see.

From the video, he may be better as DB than RB.

Good luck to him.

There will be a precipitous drop in their ranking as the powers start signing the top players. However, this will turn out to be one of Tech's better classes of the past few years.

Congratulations TaQuon on your commitment,  nice pick up for Tech.  Good luck in all of your games except for that last one in November each year.

Be careful you guys don't get a nose bleed from such a high ranking....lol

Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Oregon (and a host of other highly regarded teams) are at THIS time ranked behind North Avenue Trade School by Rivals. This reminds me of the first day leader board at one of the majors. You almost always have a no name near the top on the first day. By the time it is finished the big dogs are back near the top and the 1st day nobody will be lucky to make the cut. So it will be with the NATS. Once the big dogs get it in gear, the NATS will be shuffled down in the rankings until they are in their more comfortable and customary mid 40’s position (and lucky to be there).

That #20 ranking is misleading.  They have zero 4 star commits.  If you are a Jacket fan that has to be concerning since pretty much any player who has an offer from GT is going to be ranked a 3 star based on the fact that they play in a BCS conference.  I don't see GT competing for the elite players like in the past.  Many of these 3 star players will turn out to be good players especially in PJ's system but I wonder about the defensive recruits.

Not being a GT hater, they didn't move up in the rankings because of him, they moved up because all of the recruiting services updated their rankings this week.

Way to go Tech. Take little steps and it want take long to kick Ga's butt.

When Tech evens up the talent, look out Zipper Head.

#20 in recruiting?  I thought the spin was that Tech can't recruit at this level?  That's in the top 16% of FBS.

Good job though.  Keep it up.  The GA schools need to build their respective brand in this state so that more 4 and 5 star players strongly consider multiple GA schools before running off to OSU, USC, UF, UT, FSU, Bama, Auburn, etc.

With so many transplants there's really not that much loyalty to the local colleges compared to 20+ years ago for the elite high school players.

Gee Loraine, like the 4 star who just flipped from uga to Alabama?

GTBob
GTBob

@DYNAMICBIGBOY  Some of those guys (Ratliffe, Lands-Davis, Philpott) are 4 star players depending on which service you look at. Are we ever going to get a 5 star recruit or recruit 1/3 as well as UGA? Probably not, but we have a good class forming, with some really talented players. Also, if you think Myles Autry was the "crown jewel" of our class, and that Vad Lee had no other offers except James Madison then you really need to follow recruiting a little more.

GTBob

@DYNAMICBIGBOY Almost every one of our recruits have offers from other major programs.

@DYNAMICBIGBOY Maybe they are considering a quality degree or just trying to stay out of jail. Maybe you're the Joke DYNAMICBIGMOUTH. A humper i presume, congrats on another pre-season NC. Those high recruiting classes don't seem to be helping CMR the last few years. And yes i am aware of yalls success against us for the last decade, congrats on that too JOKE.

@TEXAS DAWG  And yet y'all have to go into OVERTIME to beat such a pathetic little school that NEVER has top-rated classes. How quaint. By the way, when was y'alls last National Championship again? All those top recruits and not a title to be found in over 30 years. Sad, isn't it. :)

@TEXAS DAWG It's almost like the best players go the same schools regardless of who the coach is.

GTBob

@Bulltoad The #20 ranking is a little misleading and will likely drop as the 4 and 5 star players make their commitments. I would expect we end up somewhere between 35 and 45. This will likely be the 2nd best recruiting class that we have had in the last 15 years though. Some of our 3 stars are rated as 4 stars by other services. We have some pretty good talent in this class.

GTBob

@forexbomb He isn't even a Senior in high school yet. As an athlete, he will likely be an AB, WR, or DB. All he really needs to add is 10-20 lbs. His size is fine.

@DawgnIT Its unlikely that we end up nearly that high but we are certainly off to one of the better starts we have had in a while.

WhiskeyBreath

@DawgnIT Why the hell should any player be loyal to the Ga state lines?

He needs to be loyal only to his friends and family.

I have live in Atlanta all my life. I don't owe a damn think to the state of GA.

@GTBob Really? Like that receiver who had offers from Grambling State, Missouri Southeastern State (wtf?) and other "major" programs?

TEXAS DAWG
TEXAS DAWG

@GeorgeStein

A lot of it is brand recognition. After a while you have to produce or you stop getting the top drawer athletes (see Nebraska then and now.) That name/brand recognition will buy you a lot of leeway in righting the ship (from the recruits stand point) if it is floundering. The alumni, not so forgiving.

Texas has stunk it up for several years now, but they can still recruit because of the name (and the MNC a few year ago). If they don't produce, they will soon start to lose those recruits to TAMU, TCU, Baylor. TCU and Baylor on the other hand can have 1 or 2 bad years, and the recruiting gets much harder.

forexbomb

@GTBob @forexbomb Hmmmmm, as a junior in high school, he is not going to grow that much...  When he reports to GT, the weight program may put another 10 lbs on him, but for the most part this kid will not grow anymore..  I hope for his sake, he can run sub 4.5.. Otherwise, college linebackers will eat him up...  We shall see...  Looks like a smart kid though..  He will get a world class education, if he wants...

@WhiskeyBreath I have never really understood the state loyalty thing either. A lot of kids want to go out of state. More power to them. There is a fun world outside of Georgia.

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@WhiskeyBreath @DawgnIT Oh, I don't know.  Maybe something to do with staying close to home so that those friends and family you mentioned can see you play in person several times during your career.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgGoneIt Of our 18 commits so far, 14 of them had offers from other BCS programs, most of them having SEC offers. I know in your mind any recruit that doesn't have an offer from Alabama is a worthless sack of crap that their mothers should be ashamed of, but some of these guys are decent football players.

DawgnIT
DawgnIT

@GTBob @WhiskeyBreath Makes more sense to be loyal to a representation of home rather than the best selling Starter jacket.

I'm not sure what you don't understand about it.  Look at the rosters of most programs, plenty of home cooking in general.  Look at the undergraduate enrollment at most state schools; plenty of home cooking there too.

The 4 and 5 star players will get more attention from schools from other states so they will naturally explore those options.  It just seems that recent history has us landing players like Champ Bailey and Calvin Johnson less frequently than we used to.  Heck, most of UGA's top talent comes from other states lately.  Going back to Stafford, Moreno, Green, Murray, Gurley, Marshall and a few others.  Signing Carter and Chubb is a good sign as well as Tech signing Autry (too bad that didn't work out).

We just seem to have gone through a decade where the top local talent gave passing interest to UGA and/or Tech before heading out.  Meanwhile top talent from other states decided to come to UGA.  It's all about perception and loyalty (or lack of it) with youth.

Why would top talent from Texas, Florida, the Carolinas, and other areas see UGA as a good spot to land but GA kids go the opposite route?  They generally end up in the same spot, the NFL without a national championship no matter where they go because only 3 or 4 teams will win it in their career.  For instance, several quality GA players have ended up at OSU over the years but they don't have much to show for their college career.  Could have been a 1st round pick coming from UGA or Tech.  Just saying.

Bottom line, it would be nice to see more GA 4 and 5 star players with a UGA or GT in their final Top 3 before signing regardless of where they end up.

@GTBob It doesn't have to be Alabama just to be credible. I doubt any guys that you have committed to you right now have offers from teams like Georgia, Clemson, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Florida State, etc.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgnIT Just looking at the recruiting classes for schools like Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, South Carolina, etc. you are wrong. Those teams are recruiting mostly out of state, with Georgia being a prime target. The main reason is because there are not that many talent rich states. If you are a major program from a talent rich state then of course you will have plenty like USC gets from California. If you are Alabama though, the majority of your recruits are coming from elsewhere.

I also still don't see why kids should have loyalty to certain states. Do you think less of Todd Gurley and Aaron Murray because they didn't come from Georgia? Plus a school like Tech will never recruit well in the state of Georgia, so what are they supposed to do?
