UGA got off to a slow start with recruiting offensive linemen in this year’s class, but things are really picking up.
Patrick Allen, a 4-star offensive lineman from Maryland, committed to UGA over Ohio State and FSU on Monday night.
The 6-foot-5, 285-pounder is pledge No. 18 for UGA’s 2015 class, and the third on the offensive line.
Allen still plans to take official visits to other schools this fall, but went ahead and picked the Bulldogs.
“Seeing (Allen) in a person was a big deal,” 247sports.com’s Rusty Mansell said. “He was a lot different prospect in person than I thought. He had incredible length. I mean, his reach was ungodly — it was like Greg Robinson measurements.
“He was 6-foot-5 and 285 pounds with a wingspan around 6-8. That’s huge with offensive linemen because it’s so important to get your hands on the defensive players and make it more difficult to engage you.
“That’s a big one there with Allen for Georgia. They pushed him to the limit at (Mark Richt Camp). They really tested him and Sage Hardin (at camp) as hard as I’ve seen them push any kids. Mark Richt did not leave those reps (from watching them).”
After missing on elite in-state offensive linemen such as North Gwinnett’s Mitch Hyatt (committed to Clemson), McEachern’s Chuma Edoga (USC), and Mill Creek’s Kaleb Kim (committed to Auburn), UGA has turned around the momentum. The Bulldogs are also considered a top contender for 3-star Emanuel McGirt of Durham, N.C. He de-committed from UNC this week.
“I kept telling people when it was brought up to me to be patient because I knew there were a lot of guys on the board that they were recruiting, including Patrick Allen,” Mansell said. “Now Emanuel McGirt is another guy who could end up being a Georgia guy. And they’re certainly going to recruit Chuma Edoga until the end.
“Georgia did their homework, and worked these guys out. They were able to go after some top targets and land them.”
It’s the second commitment in as many days for UGA, which picked up former Parkview High School running back Chris Carson on Monday.
