Ex-UGA commit says football facilities contributed to flip to Alabama

Rico McGraw revealed this week that Alabama’s superior football facilities were a contributing factor his recent switch from UGA to the Crimson Tide.

DB Rico McGraw on UGA: “They always seem to come up short in the big game …” (247sports)

The 4-safety had been committed to UGA for six months before flipping to Alabama on July 31.

McGraw told the alabamintel.com that he was impressed with Alabama’s upgraded facilities, including the indoor practice facility (IPF). UGA is expected to present a proposal for an IPF next month.

“Every program in the country wants to win the ‘wow’ factor with recruits,” McGraw told the website. “Certainly as a recruit, Alabama’s facilities catch your eye immediately.”

A couple of other highlights:

  • Alabama was the first school to offer McGraw – as a sophomore before he even started a varsity game at Nashville’s Ensworth high school. The Alabama assistant who noticed the talent before everybody else? Jeremy Pruitt, who is now UGA’s defensive coordinator. “Georgia is a sleeping giant in the SEC,” McGraw said. “They always seem to come up short in the big game such as the SEC Championship several years ago. However, I believe Coach Pruitt will help Georgia turn it around.”
  • Former Alabama linebacker Lemanski Hall is an assistant coach at Ensworth, and serves as a mentor to McGraw. “I love Coach Hall, I have a good relationship with him,” McGraw said. “He never put any pressure on me to commit to Alabama. He was excited to hear about my commitment. He has always wanted the best for me and my family. Of course he won a national championship for Alabama (in 1992) and he has always been a role model for me.”

So I guess Ledbetter want to attend a school with lesser facilities?

Look I think he is just doing us a favor here. I believe its will result with indoor field with this little bit of pushing plus ours will be 10 years newer than there's. plus everyone over is always talking as much about Bama  as they do about the Dawgs. Go Dawgs!!

I guess Rico didn't notice Bama also has recruited higher ranked safeties this year. I hope his departure for "bricks and mortar" open the door for Rashad (who is light years better) to come to UGa

UGA just doesn't have a money dispensing machine like Bama does.

Seems Rico could have just done his recruiting on the internet by searching for the " bet overall facilities in college football",

We can't worry about facilities right now. UGA has the some of the finest facilities in the NCAA, and we need to continue to stay competitive, which will happen. If Alabama's facilities are better (and that's debatable), a recruit who uses that as an his main excuse is either ignorant, or there's really another reason he doesn't want to verbalize. There are many other factors besides quality of facilities, facilities that are comparable. That being said, I wish him well and hope he doesn't regret his decision down the road.

Reading these comments is excruciating.  Of course facilities matter to fans and recruits.  Otherwise, all gymnasiums and IPFs would be just big metal barns and scoreboards would still be made of a couple of hundred lightbulbs.  Bling is the the thing.  That's why we have an arms race.  It's nice for our cheap athletic department to show up to the party about 10 years late.

I believe everything I read on the internet, especially from high school kids and the AJC. But maybe Rico is searching for something since he's never been on campus at UGA? Is it possible? Maybe Carvell could ask how Rico liked UGA's facilities when he SAW them? No sour grapes against Rico, he's a baller. But some of the reporting kills me.

we have already wrapped up recruiting w/ a number one class again!!! that's what we do win national titles and dominate the sec, and destroy everyone else in recruiting. He'll we recruit better in Georgia than UGA does!!! HAHA!!! Welcome to a real program McGraw, were u probably win a national title! Good move! UGA comes up short , hell they haven't won since 1980-81!!!! Tren twho! Obviously we don't need him! RTR! for LIFE!!!

Don't worry about Rico McGraw.  My sources inside Butts-Mere tell me Trent Thompson, defensive tackle from Albany Westover committed to UGA over Bama & and Auburn on Tues

UGA has that humongous 40 yd IPF. They can't even work on special teams in there...they should be embarrassed.

Does education matter? Nope

Does coaching staff matter? Nope

Does team chemistry matter? Nope

Do teammates matter? Nope

Do blinged out facilities matter? Yes

Just another example of how twisted our culture has become!

maybe the kid was referring to the stench of  the dwag stadium.  have they ever found out why it smells like a dirty urinal?

or maybe he read about the tons and tons of trash the dwag fans leave on campus every saturday? or maybe it was the urinating and defecating in the library / open classrooms and stairwells that  you dwags enjoy doing during game day.

that would do the trick for most folks who are also looking for a good education *sic*

If you sign with a team because of the facilities then you really need to rethink your priorities.  Maybe he'll have a change of heart after he sees how silly it looks in print.  Sorry but it looks very shallow.  It's like marrying a woman because her family lives in a bigger house than other girls you have dated.

The facilities are in fact superior at Alabama. But heck, I thought he flipped because of the vastly superior tradition and all those championships including 3 national titles in the last 5 years.

Kinda strange excuse on the Recruit's behalf.

After all, Bama had the facilities advantage BEFORE he committed to UGA, why not just commit to Bama initially since he claimed that facilities made the difference, the way he stated things there was never a reason to commit to UGA at all.

Recruits need to learn that statements made to the Media will be examined with an Adult's logic rather than the logic of the teens he is used to hanging around.

Good luck to him at Bama though, but he would have been better off not making the comments he made above.

Not too sure that could be the real reason for flipping, I suspect he was just looking for something to say as a reason. Good luck Rico I hope in the future you never doubt if you did the best thing as it could really taunt you through life.

Why did he commit in the first place? Now he's bad mouthing.

Sounds like a lot of negative recruiting coming from the Bamard state. You can tell the elephants are getting scared when they resort to that tactic. Then again that is their way.

Maybe they'll let him live in the practice facility after his eligibility has ended.

MC,

Either way the kid has to produce on the field and off the field in the class room. Alabama is not going to have the year everyone think. All these recruits that are going there are going solely because of past history. They will be 8-5, 9-3 at best this year. Nick Saban will be gone in three years because the pressure to return to championship caliber football will not be easy. Glad he is gone.

Wow.....interesting value system!!! Will he flip back to UGa if they build a bigger and better building? Don't need a kid who thinks like this. Go Dawgs

@Match369 My initial response was the same but the few times a year when it is too hot  or cold or bad weather makes a full field well worth it. One of these years we are going to have a tropical storm come along that will make it impossible to practice outside for the entire week before a real important game . Since it was brought up by Rico then it is an issue . Yes we mainly want Recruits who live and die Bulldawg but a few really great kids can be just as happy on any of 2 or 3 SEC teams  and Georgia doesn't need to pass them over because they can be WOW'D by a teams facilities. Georgia needs to catch up with Georgia State and Tech and just build it.

@DawgByte All the things you mentioned can be found at many schools including Alabama, It's an absolute disgrace that UGA has one of the most profitable football programs in the nation, but can't compete with even Kentucky when it comes to facilities.

@DawgByte

Does education matter? Pretty much a tie

Does coaching staff matter? Alabama is better

Does team chemistry matter? Alabama is better

Do teammates matter? Unless you plan on spending time in jail/prison Alabama is better

Do blinged out facilities matter? Yes

All of the above things could matter greatly to him and Alabama would still be the obvious choice.

kjheath

@DawgByte An education at Alabama is very good and includes many of Georgia's brightest kids. Several magnet kids from my sons high school in Cobb county are attending Alabama and were accepted to Georgia as well. Bama's coaching staff is second to none. Team chemistry is second to none. Teammates are second to none. You should assume that those categories are considered automatic pluses for both programs with one of the deciding factors being facilities. Twisted culture indeed.

C-Kirk
C-Kirk

@DawginCO But if you passed the girl over you would be probably in your mid 20's . These Recruits are 16 or 17 years old and some have never seen anything except what is in their home town and are awe struck when they start taking visits. We need to just build it and then that is not an issue that can be used against us by other teams.

kjheath
kjheath

@DawginCO Maybe the other factors were a toss up. You are making extraordinary assumptions about the other factors that influenced the kid.

@HotDawg Why does a 16 or 17 year old do anything. Most don't know what they will be doing 5 minutes from now. Let's not over complicate this by forgetting what age group we are trying to figure  out. Georgia needs to move the track facility and just build the best indoor practice facility in College football.
