Trent Thompson: UGA lands the state’s No. 1 prospect

For the second year in a row, the state’s No. 1 overall prospect will be signing with UGA.

Trent Thompson, the 5-star defensive tackle from Albany’s Westover High School, committed to UGA over Alabama and Auburn on Tuesday.

UGA won the recruiting battle because it was the very first football scholarship offer last year for Thompson, who is rated as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect via the 247sports composite rankings.

Thompson had always publicly listed the Bulldogs as his leader, and has admitted that he almost committed twice last year.

“He’s the No. 1 player in the state, and that carries a lot of weight,” 247sports.com’s Rusty Mansell said. “For UGA to get the No. 1 prospect out of the state of Georgia, that’s a really big deal. They’ve (UGA) have done a really good job recruiting South Georgia, and this keeps up the momentum with landing a 5-star prospect.

“UGA offered him early, and it was a big deal in talking with him. The early offer was really a big deal for him. Trent felt ‘wanted’ from the start.”

Unlike this past year’s No. 1 prospect out of Georgia who signed with UGA (Norcross High School’s Lorenzo Carter), Thompson opted to not drag it out until signing day to maximize the personal attention and publicity. Thompson was encouraged by his high school coach to go ahead and reveal his decision so he could focus on his senior season for Westover.

UGA now has 19 commitments for 2015 (including former WR signee Gilbert Johnson).

How good is Trent Thompson? His coach thinks he’s a “future first-round NFL Draft pick.”

Mansell had this opinion: “(UGA defensive coordinator) Jeremy Pruitt wants guys who can get off blocks and make tackles, even from the defensive line. They’re not going to be only asked to take on blockers. They want playmakers there, too. Trent is definitely a quick-twitch guy with big body that is so rare. There’s only a few each recruiting class that have his combination of size, quickness, and strength. That’s guys like Trent are such a commodity.

“Everybody talks about the differences between the SEC and the other conferences being in the trenches — with the offensive linemen and defensive linemen. Trent Thompson is one of those examples of what makes the SEC the SEC.”

It's good that UGA is keeping this kid in the state.  I hate to see all this great Georgia talent scattering to the four winds.

I just watched the video on SI.com on this kid. He is a beast. Sacks quarterbacks like a grizzly bear playing with rag dolls. Really good on pursuit sideline to sideline. Loves contact, obviously; I think it was the 2nd play on the video where he launched onto a big pileup and flattened it like a bomb had hit. One play near the goal line, he dragged the kid attempting to score on the ground by the foot back to the 5. He is going to really be fun to watch in college.

OG recruit Brandon Sandifer from Warner Robbins will be blocking Thompson for the Gators in the future.  Sandifer and Horton, both big OG recruits from Georgia high schools, will be playing in Gainesville after Sandifer announced his commitment for Florida last night. The kid was offered by Yale.  Don't think he will have any issues with academic entry requirements.  Before the trolls jump on that, he was also offered by Bama.  And yes, offered by Tech but not Georgia.

Really excited for this young man and my beloved Georgia Bulldog family . He will be a huge impact along with Lorenzo Carter on the line.

CMR and staff will help these young men develop into successful men both on and off the field.

This will help when they get to the NFL in no time at all. Best of all; Friends and Family can now watch these home state heroes in Athens Sanford Stadium and share in their success.

Another wasted talent under Mark Richt. The Clarke County Detention Center will have a better squad than the Dawgs.

Way to go Double-T, you picked wisely.

Way to go CMR, Coach Pruett and Coach Rock.  Keep the momentum rolling.  Your recruiting efforts and results have been outstanding this summer.  Let's pick-up an elite O-lineman.  Looking like a top-5 class in 2014-2015.

Ya'll can hate on TB all you want. He's right. Every year we get a top 7 or 8 class and by the end of the season we are all looking at a 9-4 or 10-3 season complaining. Richt is good for 9.7 wins a year. If that is good enough for ya'll then by all means keep wasting your money for season tix every year.

Don't hate on someone who backs up his opinions with stats.

Welcome to Dawg Nation!

"Jeremy Pruitt wants guys who can get off blocks and make tackles, even from the defensive line. They’re not going to be only asked to take on blockers." So glad to see that, I never really liked relying solely on the second level to make plays. Especially facing spread offenses, that puts too much pressure on those guys to be everywhere at once.

ThomasBrownUGA is boring.  Same old crap over and over again.  He must be a pretend UGA fan.  Any true fan knows and understands the challenges of competing in the SEC, at which he has done very well.

@TampGator1 According to insider recruiting boards, the kid actually does have grades issues. Tech started shying away from him about a month ago.

We need more defense players to stop the run. Uga has to get the best defense players for 2015. We have to stop the run and sack the qb. Go them player Mark Richt.

@Red-Dog Really? You made a scoreboard for one kid? Four of those five teams are ranked ahead of UGA in recruiting even after his commitment.

TB says 4 or 5 losses; you say 3 or 4.

He backs up his opinions with lies, distortions, and meaningless stats.

Don't love on someone who does that.

@dawgfacedboy There is some truth to this. UGA gets pretty much the same recruiting class every year, gets all hyped up about it and ends up with the same results. If you are happy with those results then keep marching on.

Which insider boards would that be?

I guess his previous poor academic performance is why Yale also offered him.  He also has offers from Vandy and Wake Forest, two other schools well known for poor academic expectations for athletes.  So....I think you are incorrect about that unless you can provide the exact source from that "insider recruiting board."  And by the way, Muschamp does not recruit players with grade issues this late in the process.  He might offer a 2016 recruit and tell him to work on his grades.  And FYI, Muschamp has not had one signed recruit not qualify at Florida.

I hope he lives another 50 years. That way I will know for certain that I'm not the ugliest TROLL alive!!!!!!!!!!

@GTBob @dawgfacedboy Exactly. Georgia fans need to lower their expectations under CMR and accept 5 losses each season.

I would say I am happy with those results.Am I ecstatic and elated with those results? No, but I am happy.I would love for us to win more and take a NC every now and then and I do think that is possible… but if those are my yearly expectations then I join the delusional lunatic fringe and I just choose not to do that.

@TampGator1 Lets just say it was from a pretty reliable source. You can choose to believe what you want.

@Honky UGA doesn't lose 5 games every year dummy. In fact, they rarely lose more than 3 or 4.
