Auburn vs. UGA for rising football star?

  • UPDATE: Slayton confirmed that he will be visiting South Carolina for the UGA game, but not on an official visit. “I’m going to take my official a little later on.”

Let’s keep it real: Most highly-rated prospects are overrated.

But that’s certainly not the case for Greater Atlanta Christian high school’s Darius Slayton.

If anything, Slayton (ranked as a 4-star and the state’s No. 16 overall prospect) might be severely underrated. I don’t do rankings, but if I did Slayton (and Tucker’s Jonathan Ledbetter) would both be 5-stars.

Slayton, who stars at wide receiver and defensive back, has been nothing short of sensational this season for the No. 1-ranked team in Class AA. He has 14 catches for 288 yards and six touchdowns, including two game-winners that are highlight-reel material (see the video below).

“He’s pretty special,” GAC coach Tim Hardy told the AJC. “He really is. He gets after it and does a great job. He’s pretty impressive. When we played Benedictine in our opener, he was unreal. He was All-World that night. He made two unreal catches that are good as you will see. He is a pretty special kid working hard to be as a good as he can be on both sides of the ball.”

What’s the latest with recruiting? There have been longstanding rumors that this is an Auburn-UGA battle.

“Yes, he likes Georgia and Auburn,” Hardy said. “He’s open to a few more SEC schools. LSU and South Carolina would be the next two. But Georgia and Auburn are places he has definitely liked from the get-go.”

Slayton has hinted that he may decide within the next month or two. “Sometime in the fall,” Hardy said. “Maybe when it cools off? We’ll see.”

The 6-foot-2, 182-pounder is a lot better at wide receiver than defensive back right now, but he has been given the option to play either at the collegiate level. One SEC coach told me this about Slayton: “He’s raw but he’s got first-round NFL talent.”
