It’s going to be really interesting to follow the recruiting of Daniel Fennell over the next two months.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Grayson High School is one of the state’s top uncommitted football prospects, and just now focusing on his recruiting. Once his senior film gets out, his recruiting is expected to pick up dramatically.
Fennell, rated as the state’s No. 54 prospect, plans to take official visits to South Carolina, Georgia Tech, Duke, Michigan State and Missouri.
Fennell said Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Ted Roof stopped by Grayson last Friday, and that he’s tentatively scheduled an official visit with the Yellow Jackets for Dec. 13.
“Georgia Tech has a really good team this year,” Fennell said. “They’re about to be in the ACC Championship, and they’ve been really working hard. I love their defense. Coach Ted Roof is a real cool dude. Before there was any buzz out there about me, he was here talking to me. He’s a good guy, and I like him a lot.”
Fennell said he grew up a UGA fan out of the two in-state schools but “could see myself” playing at Georgia Tech, if it worked out that way. He said his parents really like the ACC school because of its academic reputation.
“We really haven’t talked about where exactly I would play if I went there,” Fennell said. “I’d be an inside linebacker, of course, but I’m pretty sure Coach Roof wants me at (weakside linebacker) because he always mentions how I move well.”
This past weekend, Fennell took an unofficial visit to South Carolina. He got an offer from the Gamecocks a couple of weeks ago. He is tentatively scheduled to return there for an official visit on Jan. 23.
Does Fennell have a leader? “Not yet. South Carolina is looking like it could be a leader but as of now, I haven’t officially named a leader. I want to wait until I take my official visits first. South Carolina looked really good, but I haven’t looked anywhere else so I can’t say yet.”
