It was a rough weekend for UGA on the football field, but the Bulldogs built toward the future by picking up a recruit.
Chuks Amaechi, a 2-star linebacker from an Arizona junior college, committed to UGA while on an official visit with the Bulldogs this weekend. He also had offers from North Texas and Southern Miss, according to his 247sports profile.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is commit No. 25 for UGA’s 2015 class.
“I think this guy can play inside or outside linebacker,” said Rusty Mansell of 247sports. “Obviously, I think the competition at the two inside linebacker sports at UGA will be wide open next season. And the fact that he’s an early enrollee, that’s a big deal because they can get a chance to look at him this spring. And (Amaechi) can get a whole spring and summer to learn the defense and figure out where he fits in.
“I think he’s a guy who can play inside or outside. And just on the limited amount of tape I’ve seen, he’s a guy that wouldn’t have to be substituted against spread teams on certain downs. That’s a big thing now.”
The first question that most UGA fans have about Amaechi’s commitment is this: How will it affect the Bulldogs with their pursuit of Roqaun Smith? He’s the 4-star linebacker from Macon County High School who will likely decide between UGA and Florida.
“I don’t think it affects that situation at all,” opined Mansell. “UGA is definitely still looking to add Roquan. He’s a major target for him. I would be willing to bet those two inside linebacker positions at UGA will be as wide-open as any on the team next year. And anybody coming in (as a recruit) will have an equal amount of chance to start as anybody on campus right now.”
UGA projects to sign between 29 and 31 in February.
