UGA loses one of its top football recruits

UGA lost one of its top football recruits on Tuesday.

Van Jefferson, a 4-star wide receiver from Brentwood, Tenn., announced his de-commitment from UGA on Twitter. It didn’t go over well with some people.

He’s the fifth de-commitment from UGA’s 2015 class, although the Bulldogs have also flipped five recruits from other schools.

Jefferson, the son of former Atlanta Falcons receiver Shawn Jefferson, had been pledged to UGA since last summer – mainly due to his father’s friendship with UGA defensive line coach Tracy Rocker. They coached together in 2013 with the Tennessee Titans.

The younger Jefferson began wavering with UGA even before the Bulldogs lost offensive coordinator Mike Bobo to Colorado State. He took a one-day official visit to Ole Miss in early December, while still claiming his loyalty for UGA.

Things unraveled after Jefferson took an official visit to Oklahoma this past weekend. Jefferson tweeted that the “visit” was a success, and he ended up opening back his recruiting less a couple of days after returning home.

Jefferson will go to Ole Miss this weekend (on an unofficial visit) and take a recruiting trip to Florida on Jan. 30, per 247sports.

What’s next for UGA? The Bulldogs are sending a couple of coaches to talk with Jefferson on Wednesday, per 247sports.

If UGA is not able to repair the relationship, the Bulldogs could send out a new offer to a receiver, such as Class AA Player of the Year Brad Stewart of Benedictine Military School (the family has had no recent contact with UGA).

Or the Bulldogs could after the best available player at any position with the scholarship spot.
