A day after telling the AJC that he nearly committed to Auburn earlier this week, one of Atlanta’s top college football prospects committed to South Carolina on Saturday night.
Marlon Character, a 4-star defensive back from Grady High School, had listed Auburn as his frontrunner, with the South Carolina trailing. The Gamecocks made a furious rally during Character’s unofficial visit on Saturday, ending the day with a commitment from the state’s No. 22 overall prospect.
“I was leaning towards Auburn when I went up,” Character told the AJC. “Well, it was kind of 50-50. Once I got up to South Carolina, though, it just felt right. Just talking to coach Ward – we had a pretty long conversation, probably about a 30-minute conversation just about me. It was the most different conversation I’ve had with any coach that I’ve been recruited by. That went well.”
The 6-foot, 170-pounder reported more than 20 offers, including Ohio State, Alabama and UGA. Character was asked by the AJC what was different about South Carolina than his visits to other suitors.
“It was a lot different. I can’t say it was, as far having fun, it was a visit different than that. There was more talking involved. All of my other visits I’ve just been having fun, seeing some nice sights. And everything has just been beautiful because South Carolina is doing a lot of construction. I didn’t get to see the dorms and stuff. I just looked outside of the box and just got involved with the conversation me and (South Carolina assistant Lorenzo Ward) had, and I just understood why he wanted me.”
