Thursday marked the beginning of the college football season.

It offered prospective recruits a glimpse of what to expect from some of the programs they’re considering or already have committed to. It gave fans what they’ve been waiting for since January. And it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The good news? Saturday is just around the corner.

Now, it’s been a fairly busy week on the recruiting trail, so let’s get you caught up to speed with the latest news from around the state of Georgia and the SEC.

Today’s need-to-know stories

1. Georgia safety in attendance for Yellow Jackets opener

Georgia Tech target Stuart Head, a 3-star safety from Etowah, took in the Yellow Jackets’ 69-6 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday, according to Rivals.com’s Kelly Quinlan.

Head, a rising junior, was one of the first 2017 prospects to reel in an offer from Georgia Tech on Sept. 1, the first-day college coaches could contact junior high school players.

Needless to say, a 63-point advantage is certain to leave a good impression on a prospective recruit.

2. Tennessee lands son of former MLB star

Tennessee continued its dominance on the recruiting trail on Wednesday when 3-star receiver Brandon Johnson committed to the Volunteers over Miami and LSU.

Johnson, a standout at American Heritage (Fla.), is commit No. 16 for Tennessee. He’s also the son of former MLB catcher Charles Johnson, who played 12 years in the majors. If that isn’t enough, it’s worth pointing out that his uncle is Chad Johnson, the former NFL receiver who spent the majority of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Talk about bloodlines.

3. 5-star DE chooses Auburn on Friday

Marlon Davidson, a 5-star defensive end from Alabama, committed to Auburn over UGA, Alabama, FSU and Michigan at a school ceremony on Friday.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound lineman is ranked as the No. 3 player in Alabama, and he’s likely to make an immediate impact as a freshman.

4. AJC’s Friday Night Spotlight: Juwuan Jones

This week, the AJC continued its weekly spotlight series and focused in on Lanier linebacker Juwuan Jones.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder is an underrated 2017 prospect and has reported just one offer so far (Wisconsin). However, he has been hearing from several schools as of late, including Clemson, Georgia Tech and Stanford, among others.

Check out his story here.

5. Alabama commit predicts blowout win over Wisconsin

There is nothing wrong with a recruit supporting his team. So when Kendell Jones, a 4-star defensive tackle from Texas, was asked for his predicted outcome of Alabama’s season opener against Wisconsin, he didn’t mince his words.

“Bama will win 68-3,” he said in an interview with Rivals.com.

Yes, he’s talking about No. 20 Wisconsin.

6. Soundbites and storylines from around the SEC

Peyton Manning talks of returning to Tennessee … Florida will be without two key starters on Saturday … Les Miles talks about LSU offering his son a scholarship … Alabama-Wisconsin having trouble selling tickets … Nick Saban says he should’ve won more championships … Steve Spurrier says ‘the football gods smiled on the Gamecocks’

7. Recruiting round-up

2017 running back Kurt Taylor picked up an offer from Illinois, per Recruit Georgia.

Xavier McKinney, a 4-star safety from Roswell, picked up an offer from Tennessee.

Jaden Hunter, a 4-star linebacker from Westlake, received an offer from Michigan State.
