Today’s need-to-know stories

1. Ex-Auburn commit drops Auburn, Alabama from list of official visits

David Marshall had plans to visit the state of Alabama this fall, but things have changed.

Two weeks ago, the 3-star defensive end from Upson-Lee announced through Twitter that he would take official visits to both Alabama and Auburn this fall. On Sunday, Marshall confirmed to the AJC that he’ll visit Tennessee and UCLA instead.

The ex-Auburn commit says he’s still considering Alabama and Auburn, but maintains that his replacement visits could also spawn interest depending on how well they go.

At this point, Marshall remains a mystery. He de-committed from Auburn back in July, arrived at a new frontrunner in Ole Miss in August, and reshuffled his list of official visits in September.

2. 4-star QB welcomes adversity at SEC programs

Jake Fromm told the AJC over the weekend that he’ll welcome the competition at whichever school he commits to, which is likely to be either Ole Miss, Alabama and South Carolina.

The 4-star quarterback from Houston County says he’s zeroed in on the Rebels, the Gamecocks and the Crimson Tide, and would like to make a commitment soon. He’s visited each program this past summer, with his most recent one coming on Aug. 22 to Alabama.

3. Top-ranked DE includes Alabama, other SEC program among finalists

Chris Daniels, a 4-star defensive end from Texas, announced his top five through Twitter on Friday, and Alabama is in the fold.

The 6-foot-3, 299-pounder also included Texas A&M, Michigan, Oklahoma and Ohio State, though he’s considered a heavy lean to the Aggies.

Another school he was believed to be considering was TCU, but the Horned Frogs appear to no longer be in the mix.

4. Soundbites and storylines from around the SEC

Tennessee fan rushes field, gets clotheslined … The SEC showed it is the best conference on Saturday … LSU cancels its season opener … Nick Saban talks win over No. Wisconsin … Florida debuts new-look offense under Jim McElwain … Disoriented Wisconsin player tries to enter Alabama’s huddle … Aggies coach tries to celebrate with player, fails miserably

5. Recruiting round-up

Meshael Custis, a 3-star cornerback from Lovejoy, picked up an offer from Michigan over the weekend.

Jeremiah Holloman, an unranked receiver from Newton, received an offer from UAB over the weekend.

Torrance Marable, a 2-star athlete from Towers, received an offer from Troy.
